@lestef231:10 That line was way ahead of its time. Actually, there is a such thing as Xenon mist. It occurs on xenon gas discharged headlamps for cars and suv's when damp weather causes condensation to get in. There's also a xenon mist adhesive glue that you can buy on ebay. And lets not forget, the characters in this movie are light years more advanced than us earthlings. One could only imagine what they could do with a chemical like Xenon.
Y' know, besides all the early CGI (which is impressive for the time it was made) is the super snappy dialog and humor of this movie, which really makes it great; something that Tron Legacy sorely lacks. What a bummer.
"Battling evil in another dimension"? Oh, so THIS is where the Dragonball Z dub got the idea from!
All joking aside, this was a great movie, although sad to say the early CG didn't look as good as model work from the same period. The Gunstar was cool, but the action wasn't as good as Return of the Jedi from the year before. Still, awesome film. Death Blossom ruled.
Don't really agree, because Tron was supposed to be a virtual world, whereas TLS was supposed to be the real world. So Tron has actually dated a lot less than TLS.
@MrWINNSLAW I wish someone would put up the other preflight checklist... the bit just before the main battle where Grig keeps citing his advice and Alex recounts the Starfighter mantra... love that bit
I loved this movie as well and had hoped that even though it wasn't a success, they would do a sequel. It was a classic "feel good" movie of the time. The CGI was top of the line at the time, so give them credit. Heck look at Star Trek III: The search for Spock, other than the physical models used in that movie the special computer effects weren't that great!
@zbyszanna Well! I am so glad to see that, but 2010 is almost over and nothing is there. I hope he does make the new movie, and I will be one of the first in line to get a ticket. I hope he keeps it safe for kids as I want to take mine to this movie as well.
so when are arcades going to be just like this spaceship? it would be fun to spin around in a "gunnary chair" inside a virtual reality room....xbox 3?
She may not have shields, but the Gunstar is 1 of the coolest starfighters out there. That 'deflection' plating/armor did prove its worth. And of course, the Death Blossom.
@ImperialGenKlenner She's not really a fight though, so much as a gunship, seeing as all her weapons are on movable turrets and she has a two-man crew similar to modern helecoptor gunships
I think the only reason this film wasn't successful was because it came out in the same era as the Star Wars movie. If it had come out a few years earlier or later it would have been recognized for the classic that it is.
This was such an original movie concept that it's not surprising that the "remake" industry that Hollywood has become never pcked up and went with this movie with sequals, TV shows and merchandizing. It only goes to show that the final truly inovative people the movie industry every employed are long dead.
@sirbarksalot195 Actually, director Nick Castle WANTS to do a sequel. Apparently there are rights issues or something that's preventing it. All I know is that it was apparently going to revolve mostly around Alex and Maggie's son who is now a Starfighter or something like that. Could work, but I hope that if it does get made, the Gunstar should be left alone. The ship design is iconic with this movie.
The special effects are great but the movie wouldn't be half as much fun without Dan O'Herlihy and Robert Preston. They really made it worth watching.
Love those mid 80s graphics, awesome. Also, funny to think that the actor playing the alien pilot is also the same guy who played the old boss guy in Robocop :) Can almost hear him saying... 'nice shootin' son, what's your name?' :)
Always loved the thrust vectoring on Gunstar 1; funny that it would serve as an inspiration for the Star Fury fighters of the Babylon 5 television series.
HISHE Should have made one where Alex goes back to Space kicks some butt, then creates a whole lotta new Starfighters with Maggie. Living in a cave that never went anywhere.
The Last Starfighter: Still one of the greatest movies ever made. Look up "Timeless Classic" in the dictionary and The Last Starfighter is the #1 definition.
Okay where is HISHE with the alternate ending where Grig fails to stop Alex in time before he pushes the button and Gunstar 1 goes deathblossom before launch?
I would have chosen the STARFIGHTER simulator on PLAYSTATION 3...Considering how those PLAYSTATION DUAL JOYSTICK ANALOG CONTROLLERS are used in tanks and many applications
About 80% of Hollywood's remakes are utter crap. The rest are decent, and about 5% of those are actually quite good. Lets hope "Starfighter" will be among the best.
