Season 4 is the best overall Doug/Carol season. But here's a rundown:

Season 5 they are together for the first half until Doug leaves (the way he was written out was very uncharacteristic of Doug)

Season 4 they were officially together the entire year.

Season 3 they were flirting more, building towards getting back together and then finally did in the finale.

Seasons 1 and 2 they weren't together but a lot of tension was present.

I liked it. It really was a special treat...it wasn't even in the script! The producers came up with the idea, called up Clooney (who was filming 'The Perfect Storm' at the time) then kept it a secret...even from NBC. NBC was actually pissed they didn't tell them because they would've promoted the hell out of the episode. I liked it though, his appearance was short but very cool...

This was the best ending. I remember watching it originally - there had been nothing in the media about George coming back - it had all been hush hush. And as they showed the part of Carole in the plane and in the car I kept thinking they'll end it here or here. Then they showed the faraway show of the guy and I thought they'll end it there. But no, he comes closer and you realize who it was!! I always loved that he was classy enough to come back and give Doug and Carole a fitting ending!

George Clooney took standard base pay for this cameo. He did not do this for the money. He did it so Doug and Carol could have a proper ending.

Also the people who owned the waterfront home in Seattle, was not paid till the show aired. If they went to the press, and let it be known about the last few minutes of the show, they would have not been paid. Luckily they kept the secret, and it became one of the best scenes in television history. Happy 15th aniversary ER!

Doug and Carol always were my favorites on ER. I was 16 when this episode first aired and I started bawling as soon as I saw Doug working on that boat. The next day I went out and bought Don Henley's CD and listened to "Taking You Home" over and over again. I watched ER about 2 seasons after Julianna left but once Dr. Greene died, it was never the same. Heard a rumor that the writers would like to revisit the Doug/Carol storyline before the show ends and would LOVE IT if they did!

That was SOOO cool!! I remember around that time everyone knew Carol was leaving and there was no word of Doug making an appearance.
