This is a cool idea, I'm a fly tier myself and although your methods are a little crude, I like that idea of using the tip of the feather like that for a tail or wings. I think I'm going to do some experimenting with this... So thank you!
i live in pennsylvania, and in summer, nightime temps only go down to seventy or above. most of the water in my area is very clear. what do you think about packing swim goggles as part of a survival kit? i swim in the creek with a snorkel and mask like a country boy, but i see alot of fish and have a good chance of spearing one. if im smart about going in the water (watching for hypothermia, and rough water), do you think swimming goggles (not a mask) can be used in an emergency to get food?
you cna also use your multitool to unbend the hooks on a treble hook so they straighten out and face away from your eyelet. this sometimes snaps off a hook, but it gives you a 3-pronged gig for fish and frogs
in my fishing kit i carry some them plastic fake worms and casters and found they work well if not bait around also had to use worm ones like a bit of inatube to get damp wood going as they burnt hot and long
Has anyone ever done a real study on how fly fishing works? Because I heard that just the hook by itself will catch fish sometimes because the fish can't really see well enough to differentiate between a bug and a hook so they just bite at whatever lands in the water.
@DeimosSaturn Although yes some species of fish such as Blue Gills (mostly small young ones) will sometimes take just a bare hook, your chances are greatly improved by dressing it up a bit like he did here in this great video. As a fly fisherman I'd love to find a place where the bigger fish (even Bluegills) would take just a bare hook as it'd save me a lot of time and money. I've watched fish turn away from my flies, because they weren't good enough. Now that's frustrating!
a spent 12 guage shotgun shell and a 20 guage might be good help carring small jigs and weights because its small and light weight easy to carry and a peice of tape will hold them together
nice man haha this helped me alot but i found out you can also use very small diameter fishing line to hold the feathers but that is if you have fishing line
I've been watching and enjoying your videos for quite a while. You are very good at what you do. As an avid fly tyer and fisherman I must say that I'm quite impressed with your injinuity, I'll have to try that myself. I wish you the best of luck with your Discovery venture, and I look forward to your next video.
Very interesting Dave!! as a fky fisher and tyer, this is a rather cool concept. I have a few tricks to make your flies easier, but that little sucker will work. In fact I have tied grass around a hook before and caught brookies. What ever gets you your food is ideal in a survival or primitive living situation. 5/5 and Faved!!
Dental floss goes in all my kits, or into my pocket if I don't have a kit. For winding the feathers on, I'd think that would work pretty well, but not being a fly fisher I'm not positive.
yeah dental floss would work just fine, a lot of people try and make really intricate flies but i have found the simpler they are to tie the better they work
Wouldnt it make sense to just put flys in your kit? You can put bait on a fly just a well as you can a regular hook. Heck you dont even need to make a fly for bluegills, they will bit a bare hook!
nice demo dave,i think it might be a better jig than a fly with all that weight from the pine pitch,we'll see if she floats or sinks, regardless nice video..
That is how they catch big gators in Louisiana. They hang a big iron hook with a chicken on it over the water. If the gator swallows the big iron hook it can digest the iron like in 2 months.
I never fly fished be for. It looks hard.
Q: I don't understand how to rap the fishing line on the pathfinder fishing kit to get it to cast properly. It gets hooked up on it's self quite a bet. got a tip?
Great video, a great hook to use for fly tying is a mustad 3399 hook in size 8, they are very cheap, only $5 for 100, and have sharp points, and down eyes. try putting the bend, or back of the hook is the jaws of the mulitool, and try a down eye hook, it makes finishing off the head alot easier, and is better for fishing. Also try using fly tying thread, it only costs $1-$2 for a 100 yards, and can be used for sewing, fleching arrows, or tinder.
if you have dental floss in your health kit, could you use that to tie with? also, just thinking about what to keep the cotton balls with vaseline inside of...how about a 35mm film tube? you can get those for free from the photo department in Walmart. You can poke two small holes in them to run a cordage nacklace thru and put small things like a bandaid, safety pin and emergency cab fare, etc.
Very cool. I've been tying flies for years, and this was the first survival vid I've seen addressing the tying of improvised "flies" for the purposes of obtaining food. Awesome.
Honestly the idea of trapping a coyote with a trebble hook high up and him jumping seems cruel.....i mean you have to eat but that would be so painful i dont think i could live with myself if i did that : / still an awesome idea though.
Man, I hope you never stop making videos for us. Best of luck on your Discovery gig. I've been following you over a year and it has been a lot of fun trying all your ideas and tips. Learned a wealth of information from you, all for free! Thank you again.
Very cool, Dave. I love fly fishing! Ive been thinking about adding some fly line to my kit so I can throw some on the end of a long whippy stick just in case. The first rainbow trout I ever caught was with an improvised fly rig so I know it works and can be done when needed.
I used to fly fish and I remember that nothing made me feel better than catching trout with something I had made. I'll get back to fly fishing once I'm out of college cause I do miss it.
Actually, a small pair of Vise Grips may be a lot better than the pliers on a multi tool. Some people have ditched the multi-tool in favor of powerful Vise Grips. Anyway, you can do a lot worse than carrying small Vise Grips.
Orange tape on an empty film canister, filled with cotton balls loaded with vaseline, and now you're holding the knife steady while pulling back on the flint. Yup, you've been hanging out with Cody Lundin, all right!
We all learn from each other the Pathfinder Way brother, and those cotton balls are better for the common man than WET FIRE, BUT! They wont burn wet !
Yup, I carry the same sort of rig, except I have a really old aluminum 35mm film can, with a small dog tag chain attached to the lid. I keep my mag bar on the chain, so they don't get separated.
If it is very wet, there is still a lot to be said for the magnesium plus ferrocerium rod. As a backup in very wet weather, a disposable butane lighter and a small candle are excellent.
Funny I was just out doing some fly fishing over the weekend thinking about this very topic. Not a bad little fly there. And your right, thats EASY dinner.
This is a cool idea, I'm a fly tier myself and although your methods are a little crude, I like that idea of using the tip of the feather like that for a tail or wings. I think I'm going to do some experimenting with this... So thank you!

Wind line near the handle first. As the line winds on move it toward the front, That way when you shoot your arrow the line comes off smoothly
