  • I'm such a Kryten enthusiast I can't remeber the last time I didn't have a dream where I stole your masks and tried to wear them, I need a hobby.

  • I was convinced until now you were American or at the very least, Canadian. I get a lot of strange looks in the office for having a Red Dwarf wallpaper on my computer.

  • just me that was annoyed by how it's only coming out my left headphone?

  • With "Red Dwarf" "Doctor Who" and "Thunderbirds" Hollywood proved that America simply cannot pull off remaking British science fiction

  • hello there its krytie TV thanks for watching smeeeg heeeeeeeeds!!! xxx Xp

  • 5:10 :D

  • fascinating guy... every actor that wore excessive makeup has a story to tell

  • Robert, you are a spittin image of Christopher Walken in this video. Do you do any impressions? (more cowbell!)

  • @bobbyllew

I heard the new series is gonna be filmed in front of an audience. I know you're probably not allowed to tell anybody too much but I'm wondering if this is true. Also I am aware it is going to be called series X, and on the back of the BTE box it says it takes place after series 10, so is series X going to be a full six episode prequel to Back to Earth? Sorry about sking a dumb question but I just love Kryten and Red Dwarf and I am so excited!

  • Bobby, I loved Red Dwarf, I love your work, stay classy.

  • You are one of my favorite people in the whole world, Mr. Llewellyn. I just thought I'd take this opportunity to tell you.

  • I only discovered Red Dwarf yesterday and I love it!

I wish I could find a great place to watch it on the net though.

    anyone know of any.

  • Are you absolutely sure, sir? It does mean changing the bulb.

  • That was funny when you made that suction cup noise when talking about how they took off your mask.

I can't wait for the newest series! I know that a USA version of Red Dwarf was piloted and was unsuccesfull, but why didn't they just show the orgininal show? A lot of programs made in different countries are shown elsewere, why not this? A lot of people in the US don't know about Red Dwarf (I only know because my friend in Australia showed me). They are missing out on a great show!

    Aleah

  • Kryten, what is this?

    its a banana

got to say, on of my favourite moments

  • @MrDarkminecraft It always has been a banana and always will be a banana, its a yellow fruit that you unzip and eat the white bits, its a banana!!

  • You will go down through history like Hamlet.

  • just want to say thanks as mum and dad used to let me watch rd when i was little as a treat so has become inked in my mind to home:) then being away from home at uni (now finished my second yr) when ever i get home sick i put on the dvds and feel beter:) has got me through a lot:D

  • awooga awooga !!!

  • I was only born in 1997, and I've seen every episode of Red Dwarf, both English and American, and I own all of the DVDs. I love it!

  • What a Guy ;-) lol

  • hey 1 question. the red dwarf USA was (obviously cancelled) filmed with you as kryten. and my actual question is: was it filmed in UK or were you in USA? by the way. im a bog smeghead from the USA : )

  • @darkmyth2 Red Dwarf USA was recorded in 1992 at Universal Studios in Hollywood. Yeah, that long ago. However there is more Red Dwarf coming soon, we start recording a new series this year.

  • @bobbyllew u were in the best show ever man!!! does craig have a youtube channel?

  • @bobbyllew MORE red Dwarf? Now this is more in addition to that recent movie that happened? The Blade-runneresque one? Just making sure this wasn't an old message and that it wasn't a rumor or BBC hasn't pulled the plug again or something. :)

Thanks for talking to us scumbags of the internet btw! You have class!

  • @bobbyllew Please tell me you have gone back to actual sets rather than CGI, the CGI doesn't look as good.

  • Robert,

I just found Red Dwarf at the age of 28, and darn it if I'm not lovin' it. Haha. I'm enjoying it via Netflix and I'm tearing through the seasons like crazy. I'll be bummed when I reach the end.

  • I cant believe Red Dwarf is as old as I am but I still luv it. I hate to offend but WHAT THE HELL was up with 9!!!!! talk about a load of crap, wasnt in the spirit or making of 1-8. Watched and can quote parts of 1-8 but wont watch 9 every again

  • If I had a friend who ever had that plaster thing on, I'd wait till it completely covered their head apart from the straw in the nostril, then I'd fart into the straw.

  • Great vid! I have to say I'm a big fan of your work, and you've always come across as being one of the real genuine nice guys of the whole entertainment industry, as in one of the people I'd like to meet. That description of the head mold nearly gave me an asthma attack just thinking about it! hehe. Your new series Car Pool is excellent by the way. Top idea, and a really original concept! Any ideas if there's any plans in the pipeline for another series of scrapheap challenge?

  • i didnt know he was birtish too! wtf!

  • It's interesting to hear about making the mask from your point of view. I've cast heads before and it's a nightmare, especially when I'm head nose clearer.

    Cheers Rob!

  • oh my god, my eyeballs are exposed to the air!

rob, you are very cool! you smeeeeeeeeeeg heeeeeeeeaaaaaaaad :D

  • my 4 year old daughter loves watching red dwarf,we watch it a lot.

  • Red Dwarf is just an excellent series :)! I'm a 21 year old girl from Norway who just got introduced to the series by my english boyfriend. After watching a few episodes I was hooked :D! You guys did an excellent job! I wish there was more than 8 seasons (and "Back to earth), I could've kept watching in for many more seasons :D.

  • Here's an idea, why not have a re-usable mask for Series 10? I know it's not quite that simple but it's just an idea. Hope I get to see you Come back next year! Kryten is my fav character! Spin my nipple nuts and send me to Alaska!

  • Red Dwarf was the first TV program I was ever allowed to watch, and having come across a repeat on Dave, I found that I knew nearly every word that was being said, having not been aware of ever seeing the episode. Apparantly, aged 3 I was a bigger fan than my dad was. Weird then, that just 11 years since my childish, innocent humour was so delighted by Red Dwarf, I have such an epic crush on just about the whole cast.

    <3

  • Please make another Red Dwarf series. It is the greatest show in history and I have watched each episode more than 50 times each - I can pretty much memorise a whole series, if i put my mind to it.

You are the greatest character, by far the funniest, and I hope you live a long and happy life.

From possibly your greatest fan. =D

  • hi rob , just come across this post and would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for the tons and tons of laughs you gave myself and many others as kryten , thanks for the laughter mate

  • long may red dwarf live OOHH YEAH

  • I like the Cat impression!

What did you base your voice on for Kryten? Obviously it isn't your own voice/accent, is there anything that made you think 'this is what a mechanoid should sound like'?

  • brilliant guy

  • Red Dwarf was a staple part of my childhood. We are now expecting our first child and I plan on making sure Red Dwarf is a staple part of theirs as well :)

  • thanks for taking out your time to share all this facinating info on yourself and Red Dwarf... i'm always hoping a new series will be made, me and the thousands of others, so i'll be sure to subscribe for updates :D

Red Dwarf and Only Fools and Horses.... best sitcom's EVER in my humble opinion! :)

  • u should have went out for lunch in it during a break : D

  • legend

  • king bobby liew can you up upload a video wishing my friend dave smeeeeeeeeeeeg heeeeeeeeeeeeead sollory,a happy birthday?he does martial arts feel free to take the pee,if you could i would be forever in your debt, from scifi simon, also thank you for making me scream with laughter year after year, you were the best in red dwarf......tikka to ride ride neally killed me!!

  • "what a jerky middlename"

oh, come on! at least it's not 2Q4B.

  • @lygophile the poor sucker

  • ..just because i have a head shaped like freak mashed potato..'

  • sir, your a smeeeeeeeeeee. a smeeeeeeeeeeegheeeeeeeeeeeaaaadddddddd!! anyway the sound only comes out of one speaker! its a banana!!!!!!

  • Nice work Robert. Absolutely grateful for this insight!!

  • that must be weird to essentially have no senses. also, i love the bit of trivia 'i dont want to be typecast as a robot'!

  • 8:09 -- I'm one

  • Hearing about this is nice. brings a whole new perspective on the show. Also, it was interesting to see about the "manufacturing" of the mask. It could give robotics engineers ideas on how to avoid the uncanny valley.

    ...Or not.

  • Hi Robert Llewellyn,:]

Thank you so much for your behind the scenes info! I'm 21, Australian and am absolutely crazy about red dwarf. I was wondering if you could give me a few pointers about breaking into the acting industry as I've got cold feet.

    :)

  • You haven't looked after at mask with the face much have you? lol :P

  • yep I was one of those people born in '88 that love the show and watch it with my college buds :) thanks so much for this!

  • Oh spin my nipple nuts and send me to Alaska!

  • Greetings, Mr. Llewellyn! Just a quick 'thank you' from my wife and I, here in the USA...KRYTEN is the BEST, we ADORE him/you! Every series of RD was fantastic, and we hope after B2E you are able to do many more...WE AR ADDICTED!...Oh, and if you ever need any artwork or animation for LewTube, etc drop me a line...would be honored to do whatever you need for free!

  • is that robert lol

  • OMG This is exactely a year old!!!

  • nice mask i definatly remember the first episode of kryten i mean i've seen every episode twice

and by the way do you remember whom played Able the series 4 mech whom was addicted to ultrazone in the episode 'beyond a joke' ?

  • I think Rob played him too.

  • of course it was rob!!

  • "What a jerky middle name!" rofl! gotta love robert!

  • Hey Rob!

My dad loves this show! He used to watch this when he was studying in University. We both enjoy watching this show and we have become great fans of it! Congratualtions on the Back to Earth series! we all loved it. Hope theres more Red Dwarf to come!

    Good Luck!

    Tim

  • Hi! It's Me again.

where can i get a little kryten toy like the one at the start of the video?

i've always wanted some red dwarf figures, and the only merchandise i can find is little bobbleheads and model red dwarfs and starbugs. do you know were i can get a little kryten toy at the start or even the whole crew?

    thanks,

    Huw

  • Hey bobby, just wanted to say it's bout dam time you guys made some new episodes, im 21 and have watched Red Dwarf for as long as i can remember, also being in Australia its not quite as big here as it is over there, but i hope i can make up for the lack of support lol. It would be awsome if all the gang would come on down here, i would b there for sure :) Anyway cant wait to see "Back to Earth" hopefully we get it soon. Take care mate

  • hello robert,

Me and my family are huge fans of red dwarf. I've grown up watching it! I love all the series except 7 and 8.

All the other series were each like clever little short films and this worked really really well. Each story was unique and so damn funny

What happened with 7 and 8 Why use CGI? when the models looked so good and funny. Why use checanski? (cant spell her name), get rid of rimmer? what happened to the story?

Anyway, I think you lot are great

would love to work with you

  • Interesting vid - I was almost wanting you to put on one of the masks. Lol.

I was born around the time you guys first started making Red Dwarf and so basically grew up watching the episodes. Very excited about watching Back To Earth. :D

Was going to upload a vid of me playing the theme tune on my uke, but it sounded shit. Maybe in the future though, eh? (Unless you have a special request? :S)

    x

  • An interesting insight into the man behind the mask! Even if said mask is often commented on being in the shape of a novelty condom ;)

  • Robert, just a couple of quick questions,

    1) Is your second name 'Llewelyn' Welsh, if so what Welsh connections do you have?

    2) What is your accent? I love it!

    Craig, Thank you

  • Llewellyn is a Welsh name, just about as Welsh as you can get, however my parents were both born in England, so was I, so my Welsh roots are pretty far back. Most of my Grandparents were proper Welsh except one Grandmother who was a real 'cockney,' a Londoner. As for my accent, it's classified as 'RP' in this country, received pronunciation, I was taught to 'speak properly' by my mother, that means no regional accent. Maybe I should do a Wet Liberal about this subject

  • @bobbyllew i was gonna write a simlar comment, i live in wales and i know your second name should be pronouced with alot more phlegm than it is lol

  • Hi Bobby Lleww i'm eleven and i really like red dwarf, you are the best. kryten is my favourite character, because he's just so funny. it's really interesting to see how it was all made. i really couldn't stop laughing at 6:06. i can't wait for back to earth, but sadly i won't be at home to watch it on the 10th of april,do you know if it will be repeated on dave?

  • Very nice to hear from you. I'm sure Dave will repeat the new episodes of Red Dwarf a lot. I know they are showing them all again on Monday 13th. They also come out on DVD later this year. Hope you enjoy them

    Robert

  • Thanks!

  • I've got kind of a non-homosexual crush on Bobby Llew. The guy is just hilarious and comes across as genuinly nice. Great guy.

  • I'm very flattered, at my age, any old crush is good news, homosexual, non homosexual, I'll take what I can get. ;-)

  • I bet your wife LOVES to hear you say things like that. :)

  • @bobbyllew

You resemble Lance Hendriksen ( Notable for his role as " Bishop " in " Aliens " & " Alien 3 " I believe, as well as " Terminator " and " Frank Black " in the tv series " Millenium " ) Do you see a resemblance ? Also, The Kryten accent - Canadian ?

  • Thanks for the insight. I've been watching Red Dwarf on and off for years and I never get tired of it.

  • "What a jerky middle name!"

Not sure if you read every comment your videos get, especially when the video I'm commenting on is almost a year old, but I just wanted to say thanks a lot for the insight into Kryten. :D I was only born in 1991, but even when I was a kid and didn't really understand it, I always loved RD. When I first started watching, I really believed that Kryten was a robot. ^^ I've never been able to nail a Kryten impression, but if I ever see you around, I'll do my best. ;)

  • *clap*clap* absolutly love red dwarf gotta be my absolute favrouite show

  • lol, "Neeurkhyaaaah!".

  • I always wondered how Kryten came in to being. Thanx for putting up with all that ! Kryten has always been my favorite!

  • I just love it when u speak like kryten :)

  • And may the smeg be with ye!

  • Would be good if I could what you were syaing Robert, what's up with the sound? I could only hear the theme music.

  • It must mean your left speaker is broken. His speech only comes out on the left wheras the music comes out on both speakers.

  • Nope that's not it my speakers are working perfectly fine, I get the intro music but once that finishes nothing.

  • The Red Dwarf series was always a 'good' tv show but when Kryten became a regular in it's 3rd year, the show was superb. Kryten became the character that had the best one liners but never stole the other actors thunder. Thank you Rob, for your part in making one of the best sit coms of all time.

  • Rather you than me mate, i'd be freaking with claustrophobia.

  • were's part one ?

  • What a nice surprise! I know you, sir, from Discovery Channel. I've just discovered Red Dwarf and I must say it instantly became my favorite TV show. So, thank you for Kryten, smeg head :)

    corcoos,

    Romania

  • Rob ,,another great vid and yea the kids love it

  • brilliant

  • Hello, I am from the Czech Republic and I love this serial

I want to thank all the power of actors, producers and all that helped create and produce a red dwarf..Also be much looking forward to a new 4 pieces of red dwarf, and I hope that even more episodes.I can´t say how much you for this Thank serial, but such lot a messages .

I am looking for a way to thank you, at least here, but such reports are certainly many.I very thanks.Your serial and you are great ;-).

  • I don't know why but my favourite Kryten line is in series 7 Tikka to ride, When lister puts spare head 2 on Krytens body and then Kryten says says "My heavens, I'm head head"

    lol

  • you saw the other ones right not just that one show

  • Yea I saw all of them.

  • My goodness! He sounds like "Max Headroom."

  • You're a legend. Stay strong my friend.

  • 5:11 = nyaaaaaaaa!

  • mmm total sensory deprivation...apparently that's one way to do it - suspend someone in alginate...

  • your smoking! "oh is my generator over heating again?" LOL..y'know im surprised t he BBC hast made a Kryten Mask for sale yet especially with all the RD Mrch they put ot that would be bitchin!

  • "your lieing!!!!!"-from red dwarf,Kryton is the best!!!!!bring back krytee TV lol

  • Wow! I didn't know you had a youtube channel Robert!

    Subscribe!

  • It's great the Rob still looks after the Red Dwarf Fans, love to see him on YouTube.

Keep up the good work Rob and Stay Rockin'yourself!

  • The mask of K sounds like a chessy film title hahah. ''The mask of K starring Kurt Russell''. :D

  • hahaha! thats was really intresting and funny! what a legend!

    i shall stay rocking XD

  • ur awsome, Rob!!! i love the sound effect of the mask comming off!!! hahaha. Halarious stuff!! Luv ya always,

    Chantal Jalbert, Toronto Ontario, Canada

  • hehehe cool rob...

  • Aaaaaahhhh Bobby

you're funny, delightful, hilarious, satirical, legendary...

but most of all you're a goose :)

thanks for all the laughs over the years mate !

  • I have JUST now re-discovered Red Dwarf! In California, I saw it ONCE when I was 12 on KQED loved it and never saw it again for some reason. But here we are, 20 years later, and it's amazing! I love it! You were part of television history! Go Kryten! "It's a banana!" :D

  • oh no, they chopped off krytens face!

    XD

  • I think that David Ross' version of Kryten is far far far more inferior than your version Roberrt. The character would not have been the same with him playing it and i feel that you made Red Dwarf transforn from a great series into possible the Greatest Sitcom of all time!

  • I've subscribed to you for over a year because of your conscious efforts with the environment, I only realized today you were in Red Dwarf based on your Seattle SF Atlanta vid! I watched it on KCTS 9 growing up. I still live in Seattle, and I plan on seeing you and other YouTubers on Monday, excited!

  • but sir.......where do all the calculators go!????

  • Im glad they didnt cast David Ross permanently.

He was alright for the one episode but I dont believe he would have been as fun as you made kryten to be.

On the subject of RD, I also love the theory of landstrom's luck virus, and imagining some people at sometime in their life contract the virus, does it happen in real life maybe?...lol

  • Wow thanks, that's a really fascinating insight into some of the making of Red Dwarf!

  • You're almighty! Woot!

  • Why did they change the mask for series 7 and 8? I hated the new face

  • WOT?...Kryten is gr8 wotever he looks like..personally i prefer him in the later series he looked...more robotic..xx

  • i never said he wasn't "gr8".

  • wotever ¬_¬

  • Hi bobby..i just want to say...you dont look like u have aged much since red dwarf..i'm watching it now..if you went back into kryten outfit you wouldnt look any different, i luv ya..ur the best!...xxxx

  • is the Red Dwarf Movie ever going to start production???

I keep watchuing all the episodes so far

  • I Love Red Dwarf, always have and always will. Got my own family now and I have given them the Red Dwarf Bug, even my Kids.

Rob We all Love red Dwarf,

And may the smeg be with you also!

  • Thanks for the insight, Rob :) Its great to hear some more about the best sci-fi comedy series ever - whatever it might be xD.

Very interesting personal take on the prosthetics process and down to earth delivery - thanks! :)

  • I don't think I could tolerate having my head molded for a mask. I'd get claustrophobia for sure!

  • Having a mask fitting sounds worse that the 7th circle of Hell butt. kryten has the best lines in all of red dwarf, lister has the most disgusting scenes, you know getting off with space monsters and the living dead :0===> Nothing comes to mind about the other two part from Ace Rimmer lol Red Dwarf for ever *****sters

  • damn i miss red dwarf

  • Hah! I'm 14, can I still call you a smeg-head? XD

Nah, I wouldn't do that. Kryten is too cool to be a smeg-head. More a rubber-head...

Anyways... Yesh, enjoyable. The man behind the mask!

  • 20 years on and Red Dwarf is still on BBC, watch it every day on Prime. Ah, that great series who taught millions the joys of drinking beer milkshake :)

  • The Kryten Action Figurine *cough* Doll, looks like Robert Picardo.

  • One of my favorite Red Dwarf quotes: "Twelve, because they are so stupid"

    heh-heh

  • OMG! Robert, I'm such a big fan of Red Dwarf, and i'm only 12. It was a brill programme. But i dont know, why they cancelled it. Please can, you tell me.

    thanks

  • Very interesting Robert, I had braces on my teeth and they must of used that plastic stuff.

  • Nice vid you smeeeeeeeeee heeeeeeee keep em commin...

  • I really don't know which is stranger; watching Red Dwarf bloopers with Your Voice coming out of Kryten's face, or Kryten's Voice coming out of yours...

    :)

  • Ah yes... the voice... the voice of Kryten... always loved that voice. Kryten could recite the phone book, I'd would be glued to my headset! :) Red Dwarf has always been a guilty pleasure of mine, so thank you Robert for the trip back into time.

  • Great stuff Robert, thank you for doing it! I bought a couple of props from the show and met Danny at a con in Melbourne in 1997; very fond memories of that :)

  • That was quite interesting...it's the first time I've heard someone go in more depth in to what it's like to have their face cast. Normally it's "Oh, it took for ever" and such like.

    Hope everything goes well.

Shame no DJ to mark the 20th like you have, but no doubt next year's DJ will be awesome.

  • wonderful :)

  • Real ratings not real rarings.. sorry

  • When the BBC are desperate for real rarings again they will ressurect Red Dwarf whop knows perhaps for a movie... like Dr Who. Perhaps Red Dawrf meets Dr Who special, just not a twee 5 minute job for Comic Relief... as those teasers are just annoying in their shortness.

  • might want to check your audio levels next time rob. i had the volume turned up all the way on my laptop and it was still very quiet.

    great vid

  • They mmay have torn you face off but at least you kept your head !

    Well done

  • Thanks Rob, this was amazing. I was hoping on your opinion of the Red Dwarf Movie, but your anecdotes and general Kyrten-ness was a joy to watch. :) Thank you, you've made my day!

  • I miss the boys from the dwarf, we need to see them get back to Earth :(

how can they leave red dwarf on such a cliff hanger

  • Kryten could easily make his own show without the rest of the cast. Great actor and very funny. Such mixed humour put into one character, it's perfect.

  • Thank you! very interesting to listen too.

    We miss Kryten!

  • nice one comdom head :)

  • thanks for this video, robert

  • hi robert, great vlog, its great to hear all about red dwarf,i have en idea, why not try and get some of the cast of red dwarf a long with your self and do avlog in 3 parts and you all talk about red dwarf and the memorys you had of the show,i bet youtubers would love it,i know i would,i could listen to you all day taking about red dwarf.best wishes from justin.

  • Awesome Idea =D

Would be great if it happened =)

  • This one made me laugh, nice piece here Rob, take care.

  • Hi Robert, lovely insight.

    Thanks for sharing. :)

    -Am

  • Nice insight. you didn't complain like those Prima Donna's in Star Wars baking in the Tunisian sun!

How many times did you get platered over?

I used to make masks for theatre & had my face covered in Plaster of Paris for the mould, it's really soothing apart from when they rip it off & pull your eye lashes out!

be nice to hear more anecdotes :-D

  • May the smeg be with you too, Rob!

  • very nice little update.

but I'm sure i speak for everyone when i say we would have liked to hear something on the movie. any little rumour.

  • He mentioned the movie a few updates ago. I think he said he doubted it would happen now but he would love to return

  • 2X4B 523P--Such a jerky middle name why couldn't they have called me Cecil and have done with it.

  • thanks for the video!

Is that the model kit that was a available a few years ago? The figure I mean.

  • I had a mate who would quote RD to no end, which kind of spoiled it for me, but not enough to not watch it when it was on.

I know you probably get inundated by everyone about projects you have done (I'm more interested in s/heap so how about a Q and A, and you choose the best questions out of comments to answer?

  • What a thing to have to sit through. They could probably just do a 3D Laser Scan of your head these days.

  • Thank you so much! If you think this will stop us dwarfers from pestering you for more anecdotes i'm afraid you are going to be disapointed!

  • Interesting insight there. That would be a strange process to sit through that every morning.

  • Well they cast his head once a series, and built the masks from that one cast.

  • Oh good point, I was I suppose thinking of having a rubber mask glued onto your face every day, but yeah, I got my wires crossed there.

  • i ike that one where you go " hello could i possibly disract you for a breif second" lol i was laghing my head of X[)

  • I didn't know they had to rip it off your head...

  • Yep I was born in 1992, and my dad introduced Red Dwarf to me when I was six. Didn't get any Cassettes or DVDs of it for atleast another 4 years because we were strapped for cash, but when we got the chance, we SPENT. The best British programme no question
