  • I visited the guy with shades in THAMEL, Kathmandu. He can play many other percussion instruments, he owns his own shop and sells many types of drums & bowl. True in the Video he isn't playing traditional madal, more of a fusion of tabla & madal. However, He helped me Get to grips with playing traditional madal. I LOVE THE MADAL, The true Nepali instrument!

  • excellent !!!

  • Wow, He is going solid assome!!

  • how big is the madal dayan side

  • awsome yaar.....yesari bajauna pani dherai practice chainchha...

  • madal legend

  • so nice awesome!

  • very similar to the north indian Pakawaj. Except that the Pakawaj has a wheat flour dough head on the base side.

  • I started playing the madal, could anyone help me with the traditional techniques?

  • ya something for ''kehokeho'' I think he plays awesome madal. just use your commonsence man, he is being madal for decades, dont you think he knows the traditional way of playing?

He may be trying to be adventurous with his instrument.

  • I hope you do more research in Nepalese traditional folk music and the new age indi-influenced nepali music. I agree he knows traditional way but what he is showing us here is nothing traditional.

  • Awesome, He plays madal damn good.

  • i didn't like the way he is playing because he is playing it like a tabla. that's not the traditional way of playing madal. obviously this guy has not clue how it is played in the real 'gau ghar' of nepal.

  • i agree with you. this is not the real madal tune. it sounds like indian tabla thing.

  • Tabla is said to have been born by splitting a barrel shaped drum called pakhawaj. Madal, like pakhawaj, belong to the family of barrel drums which makes drumming techniques somewhat similar between these percussion instruments. The style of his performance indicate an attempt towards 'classicalization' of folk drumming. What you refer here as 'gau ghar' would be a typical 'folk technic.' Both versions should be concurrently propagated, practiced, and acknowledged with respect.

  • yeah but more and more musicians are adapting to the 'new' style. the real traditional style is fading away, and that is sad. of course it's always nice to experiment and develope new styles, i am not againts that at all.

it is true that tabla was originally a one barrel drum but even then, the way they played tabla was the same as now. but madal has it's own style, which is not similar to tabla.

  • @kehokeho maybe he is not playing traditionally, but that is nothing like tabla technique. no harmonics or modulation, and tabla finger technique is VERY different from what is seen here. if anything, he's playing it more like a khol (mrdanga.)

  • MFRedeemerp2 and jaikwillis

    Thank you for the comment.

Nepal is "Tihar" (festebal of light) now.

I'll upload, if video is edited.

    Please come for play again.

  • i've never seen anyone really play a madal with skill like that. mine is in such disrepair i can't use tabla techniques on it or i'll cut myself haha

  • damn thats awesome
