People say graffiti is a crime because brothers paint it everywhere...and people that think its a crime, that graffiti looks awful...because they dont have power of art in their heart, they think that graffiti is ruining the place, making whole place look like shit...as for us...that have that in our hearts...it is art.
Grafiti is art not vandalism its just makin a boring wall look beautiful and tags r jus getin ur name out more artist sjould get commisions for money cos its illegal so atleast get paied for it on legal cpmissions and more legal walls need to be made x
@keir193 I appreciate the civility. I really want an honest dialoge.
So why is it ok on some guys shop?... or anyplace you can't call "yours"?
I have been a breadwinning painter for the past 30 years and can't imagine making making my art by first making a victim. This is costing $20billion per year that we could be putting into arts education or public art. I paint big, murals and understand the passion of working large, but put it on a canvas and you have a way of paying your bills.
@ADJohnstone that maybe true bt HIPHOP culture is not about paying your bills even tho thats what the commercialization of our culture trys to present it like that. Hiphop has and always will be about telling our story, what is our story? its the craddle of civilization, and we were taken away from that threw 100s of years of colonization/slavery/and being forced to live in a monetary seystem. so we paint were we want, rap do and say what we want, wear what we want becuz western society is fake.
@Wfggirl61 And how would you react if someone destroyed YOUR shit in the cause of... "hell I'm just telling my story"
You cannot expect to ever get the respect you demand or have anyone listen to your message (no matter how valid) by making victims of the people you are trying to reach. You only breed resentment and bitterness.
This shit is costing $20billion (that is a stack of $100 bills 72,000 feet high) every year that could be putting art back into education.
“Respect” is a word I constantly hear from young graffiti artists I work with who want to have their work taken seriously. The “graffiti art-stile” is perfectly valid and deserves the chance to be much, much more… It’s such a shame it has to take a karmic low road and disrespect itself. Respect is also a two way street, and if you are pinting on someone eles stuff you are are the one that is doing the disrespecting.
Talent can never get the respect it deserves by first creating a victim rather than a viewer. It may also be bad art for discounting itself. Work and talent should not be condemned to the obscurity and erosion. To take the art from here to the next level needs a shift in the way the artist thinks about their art as a legacy, and its rightful place in the history of art.
So many people don't even realize what goes into writing, there's so much of a respect level involved in the ART of it. people don't take time to realize it. There's a message here. Listen up society. And whatever they wanna call it im going to keep writing no matter what.
One of the best films I have ever seen.... wonderful piece of history! These kids were the TOP and showed that art is a natural thing. Heck, I'm glad they chose to tag or paint, or whatever, those train that to be involved in something bad. Hip hop : dance, music and art. Whatever could one ask for. These guys set a trend and influenced many artists. Love ya for it!
fuck this. i'm starting out as a graffiti ARTIST, it IS an art and always will be. Ask any actual artists, whether it be a musician like me, or visual arts, culinary arts, whatever! they'll ALL say it IS an art form and should NOT be a crime.
Ok i know a lot of ppl do this but i need my voice heard so here goes. I am an 18 year old rapper from toronto. i know i can make a difference in the game if you just gimme a chance and listen to my music.
If the graffiti leaves people in awe, or if it displays a meaningful message of some kind, it's definitely art, if it's something retarded like 'John waz here' well why fucking bother, deserve to be locked up for that!
original hip hop is faith and faith is like a grain of mustard seed. The body of hip hop composed by it's elements commanded a mountain (the world) to move and so it did.

graffiti is the application of a medium to a surface. hmm and what is mona lisa?
MakeAGameWithMe 1 month ago
@MakeAGameWithMe Leonardo painted on HIS canvas .. not someone else's. It' all about where it is, not what it is.
Do you have a car? How would you feel if you came out one morning and YOUR car had been painted? Hey.. it's just a surface, right?
ADJohnstone 3 weeks ago
@ADJohnstone yes it would just be a surface just like a train is a surface like the guy said.
MakeAGameWithMe 3 weeks ago
@ADJohnstone to be fair, most graff artists do not believe in tagging someones car or home, as well as schools and churches

Getting into the “what is art” debate is an ancient and slippery slope and it gets us nowhere.
I don’t think anyone should make judgements like that. It’s very bad mojo for artists slam other artists work, so lets say “everything is art”.
So… When does “everything is art” become “wrong” ? Not “bad” art… “wrong”?
It becomes wrong when it is on someone else’s stuff … Its not what it, it’s where it is. THIS is the needle point of the issue.
