I have been a breadwinning painter for the past 30 years and can't imagine making making my art by first making a victim. This is costing $20billion per year that we could be putting into arts education or public art. I paint big, murals and understand the passion of working large, but put it on a canvas and you have a way of paying your bills.

Hiphop has and always will be about telling our story, what is our story? its the craddle of civilization, and we were taken away from that threw 100s of years of colonization/slavery/and being forced to live in a monetary seystem. so we paint were we want, rap do and say what we want, wear what we want becuz western society is fake.

You cannot expect to ever get the respect you demand or have anyone listen to your message (no matter how valid) by making victims of the people you are trying to reach. You only breed resentment and bitterness.

“Respect” is a word I constantly hear from young graffiti artists I work with who want to have their work taken seriously. The “graffiti art-stile” is perfectly valid and deserves the chance to be much, much more… It’s such a shame it has to take a karmic low road and disrespect itself. Respect is also a two way street, and if you are pinting on someone eles stuff you are are the one that is doing the disrespecting.

Talent can never get the respect it deserves by first creating a victim rather than a viewer. It may also be bad art for discounting itself. Work and talent should not be condemned to the obscurity and erosion. To take the art from here to the next level needs a shift in the way the artist thinks about their art as a legacy, and its rightful place in the history of art.

Getting into the “what is art” debate is an ancient and slippery slope and it gets us nowhere.

I don’t think anyone should make judgements like that. It’s very bad mojo for artists slam other artists work, so lets say “everything is art”.

So… When does “everything is art” become “wrong” ? Not “bad” art… “wrong”?

It becomes wrong when it is on someone else’s stuff … Its not what it, it’s where it is. THIS is the needle point of the issue.

One of the best films I have ever seen.... wonderful piece of history! These kids were the TOP and showed that art is a natural thing. Heck, I'm glad they chose to tag or paint, or whatever, those train that to be involved in something bad. Hip hop : dance, music and art. Whatever could one ask for. These guys set a trend and influenced many artists. Love ya for it!
