  • In your oppinion which on one would u suggest the 165 grain or the 180 grain speer gold dot for my 40 s&w?

  • Thanks for all the great reviews. Any chance this load will be retested with ballistic gel in the near future? Thanks...

  • I did a test similar to this with 135 gr. Double Tap ammo which by the way has about 570 foot pounds of energy rather than 490 out of a 4" barrel. I had about 14 inches of Very explosive penitration.

  • I would also like to request a sim-test retest on this...this is pretty much the .40 guys 124+p equivalent...I'd be very interested to see if it didn't do much better in the sim-test expansion wise and perhaps closer to the fbi data

  • How does the short barrel ammo in .40 perform? Any difference using the standard ammo in .40 cal?

  • Informal test indeed! Next time I feel that the wet newsprint is trying to do me harm I might reconsider the ammo choice. When I am serious about use against humans however I see no reason to swap this out. The premise of this test is nonsense. One stop shots would be nice however I live in the real world and the emphasis should be on accuracy with speed to place multiple well aimed shots in locations that will stop a would be attacker.

  • garbage test

  • @cubancripto He uses Sim-Test media now which is more like ballistic gel. This is a older test. I hope he will make another video on this bullet with the new media he now uses.

  • another great vid, thank you.

yeah that is too much penetration, and not enough expansion for sure. HST 180gr beats by a stretch

  • Are you so kind of chick magnet? That's the 2nd make up ad AHAHAHA.

  • there called gold dot for a reason, they didnt expand all the way if they did you wouldnt of seen the gold dot in the center...but nice vid!

  • November 2010 - I'm moving to SIM-TEST ballistic test media late 2010....this could be retested at some point.

  • @tnoutdoors9 Please do. This is a very popular LEO duty round for .40

  • @tnoutdoors9

A retest of this, then compared in the video against the 180gr, would be much appreciated.

I could send ammo if need be.

  • best hp ammo for my 226.

  • wich would you recommend for a glock 27, this round or the 180gr short barrel line by speer?

  • @Ronald3570

I have never tested Speer's short barrel line, so I'm probably not the best resource for a good response.

  • The Ammo doctor!!!! 5 stars thank you sir

  • The 53970 is the full power load. It sounds like this was the medium velocity 165 grain GDHP.

  • Did a test a few weeks ago with the GD in 180gr vs 165gr. 165gr looked just like this shooting into water with a Glock 27. 180gr expanded much more.

  • the 155 and 180 gold dots are recommended over these for a reason

  • an appropriate way to test the expansion of bullets is with ballistics gel. i think that maybe your test backstop may have been too light or not as dense as compared to flesh or meat. get some gel and test again. you will get far less penetration and more expansion. maybe around 13".

  • @ildeliso

Agreed, gel is the way to go, but at $60 to $80 minimum per block, IF that calibrates, it's not a medium that I can crank out consistently. Which is why you don't see many gel tests videos. I was hoping to change that, but I can use gel only sparingly.

  • @tnoutdoors9 Ballistics gel doesn't mimic flesh. It's just a consistent medium for scientists around the world to shoot into. So long as you keep on using the same method, it's all good.

  • @tnoutdoors9 Go to Wal-Msrt and buy Knox gelitine and mix it at 10 parts water to one part gel. for about $20 you would have enough to do a proper gel test and it works well too

  • footpounds xD hihi americans.... great video thanks

  • I carry .45 230 Grain gold dots, I'd love to see a test on that!

  • it seems l ike this ammo coud penetrate through a human body?

  • Hey ! I wanted to read those paper ! ! !

  • @bitcheznhos

Trust me, you really didn't. It's the local Nashville paper, which is the most anti-gun publication I've ever seen. It is best utilized for ballistic testing or wiping the lower orifice.

  • @tnoutdoors9 , but there is a section where the sports score was. and also a coupon for 1/2 off a chicken and shrimp combo dinner at the local japanese steakhouse where they cook the food in front of you and do tricks with the eggs and onions. got these same gold dots in my glock 23.

  • @tnoutdoors9 Whoe you live in nashville? I live in clinton. Odd. Random question. Do you think the policeman are slowly becoming corrupt?

  • I agree with suave1906, there is no way this was the full power load. I have done test with the full power 165gr Gold Dot and it performed excellent. Please retest if you have time with the 53970. Thanks for the videos

  • @Glockshooter09

On the list for a ballistic gel test at some point.....

  • I honestly think Winchester Ranger SXT is the best... the pedals when expanded are like blades and expands nearly to .70-.75... its also cheaper. I do have 124 Gr +P rounds in 9mm as well as Winchester Ranger SXT... I don't know, I just have to give it to Winchester on this one IMO.

  • @SHUTupNrocK8 They do have a +P+ in the SXT, now that is old stock, but it is now called T, and not sxt. This is for 9mm, dont know @ the 40. just a little info I have found out.

  • The round in this video is the medium-velocity round (53949), not the full-power 1150 fps load (53970).

  • @suave1906 ive always wondered if they use the bullet for those two loads, i suspect they do

  • @suave1906 you have to be right. I have done tests with the full power load and it works great for me. tnoutdoors9 please retest with 53970! Thanks for the videos

  • @suave1906 you have to be right. I have done tests with the full power load and it works great for me. tnoutdoors9 please retest with 53970! Thanks for the videos

  • usually gold dots open WAY more then that

  • @kingbigdawg9

Agreed, they always have for me. This may be worthy for another test.

  • just bought some! glad i made the purchase

  • you should do this test with a .380.

  • I might toss a few .380's into jugs later this year, but I would show some .38's first.

  • instead of denim try the hooded sweatsirt material

i read thats what criminals are wearing these days

  • LOL Hoodies are the clothing of choice for bad guys around Nashville. There is a running joke at my house about it, so I received a hoodie as an Xmas gift.

  • Well done! I've test fired these rounds thru my G27 & they were flawless, but I think I'll stay w/the 180s from Speer

  • Key take-away from this test: gold dot + denim = clogged hollowpoint and under expansion.

  • wow some what simular too the ranger but deformed somewhat from what we are usta to seeing good work buddy.

  • damn ur so right it does look very much so like the ranger ammo....i noticed that too

  • The difference is that the Ranger T series ammo will expand more effectively after encountering clothing.

  • thats good to know...i need to get some ranger t for my glock 23.......i have her loaded up with Hydra shok 180 gr JHP

  • I know where u got the gun from, u borrowed it from hickok45 i recognize the Austrian proof marks on it

  • Not this gun....I don't think he owns a G22. This gun belongs to a family member. His son has a G19 with Austrian proof marks, which is really neat.

  • do you think if it was 180 grains instead it would improve?

  • 180gr GD would perform somewhat better (open up better) but not as well as HST or Ranger Tseries.

  • THIS is the video I have been anticipating since you said you were planning a .40 video. Thanks a lot for this one, TNOutdoors.

I'll have to remember to thank DRT on the GT boards.

  • You are the best ammo reviewer on Youtube, bar-none. :)

  • 22 inches LOLZOLZOLZ

  • This is why I just shoot .45 ACP. Although I still use premium ammo, usually something Corbon and +P.

  • Thanks for the test. Thats a good heads up on that ammo. 5/5

  • I really enjoy your videos they are great. But I have a question. How long does it take to fill up all those water jugs with newspaper?

  • 4 jugs, between 2 and 2.5 hours total. Has to be that way for consistency. Then, they set for 4 or 5 days before the test. Again, I'm consistent on that as well. It is time consuming, which is why my timing of posting ammo tests is all over the map.

  • Maybe this is something like to much powder behind the bullet.

So much power on impact that it folds to 'good'.

Still, I don't wanna meet it....

  • nice......

  • horady taps 155 or 180 gr 40S&W in my keltec sub 2000 what do u think abt them

  • Ranger T series and HST are top choices in this as well as most other service calibers. Take the time to tind them, buy a few boxes, and stop worrying about self defense ammo. I personally would not choose hornady.

  • hornady is all any1 around here has for 40S&W hp but i'll look on line an see what i can order
