  • Ive got to say, CCR's better.

  • @bluespower94 I've got to say, no

  • I like his vocal prowess especially on a few other songs he does... as one of the original delta bluesman he does deserve more credit

  • @busessuck1 - He was not a Delta Bluesman. The Mississippi Delta is in the state of Mississippi, but the entire state doesn't lie within the Delta region.

  • This song was first recorded in 1926 by Otto Gray and his Oklahoma Cowboys...........

  • @stbricesday Dave Cutrell recorded it the same year

  • @L0uisRp Yes you are right, in fact the band at the time was called 'McGinty's Oklahoma Cow Boy (sic) Band' , of which Dave 'Pistol Pete' Cutrell was a member and recorded the song. Thanks Louis.

  • is there an artist that HASNT recorded this ?

  • Thanks for the post and for the lesson.

  • epic

  • Leadbelly wrote the song in Sugarland prison Texas.

  • This is great! Thanks for uploading!

  • Leave to youtube to dig up burried treasure.

  • Cryin' Sam Collins was almost exactly the same age as Lead Belly: Sam was born in late 1887, and the 1910 census recorded Lead Belly's age as 22. They were both born in Louisiana, both left the South in the '30s, and both died in Northern cities in 1949. Collins started recording several years before Lead Belly did. He was not the same Sam Collins who Mance Lipscomb said he learned from.

  • Under rated ... Sam Collins was WAY under rated!

  • Thanks for sharing jimmy... Wicked sound.. love that rag time sound xxx

  • i think, could be wrong that there was actually another recorded version a bit earlier than this by some cowboy band, not sure though

  • I think there was a version recorded in 1929 by "Romeo Nelson", though i've looked through all my early country cd's i've never seen this song crop up anywhere as a standard or otherwise

  • @dsingo: Yes. You're thinking of the version recorded by Dave "Pistol Pete" Cutrell of Otto Gray and his Oklahoma Cowboys. I personally like Van Morrisons version.

  • Wow this is amazing, Sam Collins is one of my favourite bluesman of all time. Thanks so much for posting this..... if you have any more post it, I can't find a copy of his music anywhere!!

  • search for sam collins on prewarblues . org and you will find all his recordings in mp3 format :)

  • Man, pulling the classics out for this one. I like CCR's version, but can't beat Mr Collins since it is the orin. Thank you not heard this in a long time.
