  • the 2005 version did introduce me to he world of P/P and jane austen.,initially, i didnt like this version.its too stiff/repressedt/actors are too old.etc.all opposite of 05.im biased so i consider the historical accuracy then i begun to 'look outside of the box' .Our lizzy here is absolutely gorgeous i mean her eyes do really sparkle?,it was alwys mention in the novel.our darcy here well his really good in repressing his emotion but im too biased over mathhew's darcy he manage to pull off

  • :26 - *SMEKK!* "Dust!"

  • 1:12 he looks like she ran over his puppy...

  • never thought she was american

  • I love how you can hear the trembling in his voice as he relates his feelings <3

  • This is the best version of P&P but I wish the director had ordered a few more takes. It's obvious there were many errors that could have been corrected. E.g. at 2:50 Elizabeth accidentally says, "Who that knows what his misfortunes can been can help feeling..." and later (not included in this vid), she hesitates for too long when she says, "You could not have made me ... the offer of your hand in any possible way that would have tempted me to accept it." Lady Cath also makes this error later.

  • Yep, casting was very well done in need. Pity that most of the original is missing and what we have is in the wrong order!

  • I too like this version much better. I feel it's much closer to the book. I could watch it a billion times over <3

  • THE Pride and Prejudice! I love the way this version is true to the period.

  • @iluvspence This version’s eloquence is exactly what the novel portrays! Having studied the subject, I shall continue to refer to the abomination that is the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice as “Jane Austen for Dummies”. (No offence to the dummies out there. I’m sure you’re good people ;))

  • umm don't boo me but this darcy seems like such an asshole, i hate him. in the 05 movie, darcy comes across as proud (yes) yet shy and misunderstood. he is more likable and doesn't look like he wants to beat the crap outta you. he just has those puppy dog eyes, lol.

  • @VampiresExist0013 As far as QUALITY is concerned, the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice is a pile of shit compared to this. You may PREFER that one but it is dumbed down to the point of being offensive.

  • @VampiresExist0013 I don't think she looks bored at all. She is reserved and keeping a bridle on things while still being open and communicating, all of which are characteristics that are sorely lacking in modern society. I thought she looked furious, actually. And the disdain and disgust she puts into the last words "A more gentleman like manner" show all that is needed. No yelling, no spitting, no shaking of fists is needed. Modern American actors don't know how to speak without speaking.

  • love this actor!!!=)

  • His eyes!!Colin speaks with his eyes! The best Darcy ever!

  • Gosh, I wanted to say "OUT! OUT OF THIS ROOM!" while Mr. Darcy was insulting (as an expression of love) Elizabeth. I bet that's what's going on in her head, but she just can't say it because of the restraint and etiquette she needed to practice. LOL!!

  • for someone so seemingly smart, Mr Darcy was absolutely silly in thinking anyone would say yes to THAT proposal.

  • at 3:23/24 there's something sexy about him!! :D

  • How many times can I watch this scene without falling in love with Colin Firth? This movie has become my obsession. Ohhhh, how I love Colin...........

  • @arianna19742000 lol, I am so glad to read these comments and see I am not the only obssessed one! I watch part of this every single night, like a bed time story. lol

  • @suchetameister I can't say I've watched every version of Pride and Prejudice, but I agree. Keira, in looks, I think is a better choice for Elizabeth, but she does lack maturity, although she has always seemed more the right age to me. She's supposed to be twenty roughly, isn't she?

Nobody will ever portray Elizabeth rightly though, just because we create our own image of her in our heads and any difference in the actress seems slightly off to us.

:) I'm only 13, sorry if I got any of that wr

  • Kiera played the role better and i prefer the movie Darcy over the miniseries. If they had the "time" they would've portrayed it better fer sure!

  • Darcy got PAWNED!!!!

  • @crackerpopskikay YES, but you mean "pwned".

  • Become a fan of period drama movies on facebook!

  • This is just as I imagined while reading the this scene! Bravo!

  • I love the artistry of the 2005 film but I watch this miniseries over and over again! I still think it's unfair to compare the two. They are two distinct interpretations.

  • I gotta say I'm in love with both versions. But this scene is what I love more than the happy ending!!! :D Matthew is not a worthy "Darcy". With the short running time was not enough time to allow Darcy's repressed ... interest & his painful adjustments to achieve their personal love story. The Darcy of the miniseries of course had more (screen)time to show.

  • I love how shocked Mr. Darcy is!!! haha!! I LOVE this scene!!!

  • OWNED!

  • elizabeth of this version really sucks....no passion....lack of expression when darcy declares his love for her....and where are those absolutely beautiful eyes that jane austen put so emphasis on in da novel....darcy basically fell for the intelligent and 'uncommonly' beautiful eyes of lizzy. cant find dat in 2005 version even:(

  • This is my favorite version of Pride and Prejudice. :)

  • I love both versions, but.... arg its hard to explain. This Lizzie was not surprised enough, at all--in the book she's beyond shocked, and I thought the 2005 version showed that better. Yet this one sticks closer to the book and takes more time, but I have to say, that I think I preferred Kiera Knightelys Lizzie better than this girl. She had more of the spunk, though a little too much I thought, but still

She should have been more outraged and shocked here, like in the book. stil luv it tho

  • This is the supreme adaptation. Dialogue, setting, even fashion in beauty--all are preserved exquisitely. Did anyone notice how Liz's class and financial situation are perfectly expressed? the girls (and mum!) have a mere three dresses each, and swap. The eldest two have one "good" piece of jewelry apiece, and they make their appearance often---simple garnets--just what a girl of her £ would have. It's the way I grew up, without all this flummery.

  • Stung boi

  • you tell him lizzy XD

  • HE is the true Mr. Darcy! No one can measure up to Colin Firth here.

  • Lord, that man is sexy!!!

  • I like both versions, this one because it stays in touch with the novel, but I like the 2005 version because it's quick and has beautiful people and scenery. This is clearly the more accurate, but that was not the intention of the 2005 version. What I do like about the 2005 movie is how youthful and lively the Bennet sisters are, I feel they were true teenagers, while this movie lacks that. Even Elizabeth seems "too old" for a twenty-year-old.

  • This is closest to the charm of the book. The 2005 version had some nuances that made it "quite" commercial -- the kissing scene for instance which is nowhere in the book. My opinion. This doesn't mean that the 2005 version isn't good -- it was crafted for a bigger audience. I like the witheld passion in this one which makes it more romantic...isn't passion more romantic when hinted at? My opinion.

  • Does anyone know where I can find this online, or buy this?

  • @tangycheezexists

Hello! I got mine at Costco. Amazon carries it, too!

  • @tangycheezexists -- amazon.com - they released a dvd version last year :)

  • @TheASLeigh Thanks so much :)

But do you think I can find it at F.Y.E.?

  • go Lizzy!!! give him a piece of your mind.... surprisingly i very much like Darcy's character, as well as lizzy's of course.

  • I prefer this to the 2005 version.

  • Why is the clock out of order? It is a quarter past six during all the scene.Jennifer Ehle is a real beauty while she expresses herself to Mr. Darcy "You are mistaken..."

  • I prefer the 2005 version there is so much more emotion so much more chemistry!!

  • I just wish they had not cut the scene short. It ends with Darcy saying "You have said quite enough Madam" and leaving the room. Other than that, this clip is awesome.

  • I prefer the 2005 version!

  • on of the greatest proposal scenes bit North and South proposal sceene is the best

  • I think both the series and the movie are lovely. Of course the movie is lacking a little because they had to condense the script for time reasons, but both tell the story beautifully.

  • I LOVE THIS SCENE!!! The tension and emotion unfolding perfectly!!!!

  • Colin Firth is so hot!!!! I love this so much, they're both amazing in their roles.

  • I like the way that this verion does not update or simplify the language. In the 2005 version they rush through their lines as if the director is holding a stopwatch yelling "Faster! Faster!". This verion really allows the atmosphere and emotions to develop.

  • @kaunas88 hhahaa!

  • @kaunas88 I agree wholeheartedly. This version really allows time for character development and tensions to build. It so closely follows the book. I did not care for the newer version because it was rushed. I felt sorry for the two friends with whom I went to see the 2005 version in the theater because I thought they missed out. I hope, since then, that they have been able to see this version.

  • @kaunas88 I agree with this. I like both versions for different reasons, but in the end the BBC version is superior. For one thing, the BBC version had more time to be true to the book.

  • @kaunas88 of course this is the series not a film.. :) ..

  • the 6 people who dont like this version or pride in prejudice in general are the reincarnations of Mr. Collins. they r snotty, and just weird!!! its sooo cool!!!

  • @happybunny281 Maybe their realistic and feel their intelligence has been insulted, and know that her refusual would be so inconceivable during that time in Regency England, a young gentry woman refusing an Aristocrat? They may think It's almost very silly thinking of such a refusal. Wouldnt of happened. How did Charlotte word it? "You would be a simpleton indeed."

It's a decent period yarn though, on the same level as Dickens Great expectations perhaps.

  • 1:12 poor Darcy looks like someone ran over his puppy.

  • intense

  • here's how not to propose to the woman you love!

    Love CF. Sigh!

  • God I love that scene. I wish I could speak like that. My vocabulary consists mainly of one syllabul words.

  • @ADyingFaith sounds like rapid fire Shakespearian verbosity to me. Who speaks like this? The rapid back and forth conversations that wouldn't allow time to digest what was said before replying with a witty response. Shakespearian verbosity or a "Gilmore Girls" script?

  • This is so wonderful - still! Come on, BBC, give us a repeat: this time with the bluray, please!!!

  • @annie2shoes It is on Bluray. Fixing to watch Mr. Darcy in high definition are we? (8^)

  • No one does Mr. Darcy better than Colin Firth..

  • This 1995 version is superior to the 2005 version based on two factors alone: Mr. Darcy's eyes and Lizzy's breasts.

  • If you guys like this movie, then I recommend that you watch a series that is very close to it...It is about 70 episodes.... In the youtube search bar just pu "Asi english subtitles"......I am sure you all will love it...Let me know!!!!

  • I watched both versions - 1995 and 2005. This version (1995) is the more accurate according to the novel. I enjoyed the acting of Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth... the hidden emotions beneath the seemingly 'stiff' etiquette of that era can only be discovered by paying close attention. Beautifully done!

  • this is quite different from the 2005 version. this what? stiff? but as the above poster said in in this era they practice what you called that? etiquette in restraining their feeling unlike the new version. I think you have a point.

  • I personally appreciate both versions for different reasons. I realize this version is more accurate to the novel(yes, I have read it. several times in fact.) but I think the 2005 version has its own charm. I enjoy watching both versions.

  • @FullmetalShortOne I agree with you . I love both versions !

  • I eventually decided to watch the film version as I had heard it was supposed to be so good. (I had resisted the temptation until I felt I could watch it with an open mind) I agree completely that it was a travesty not only to Jane Austens original work but to the fine acting of the 1995 version and can't imagine ever taking the time to watch it again. And by the way, I was always led to believe that Pride and Prejudice is set in the very early 1800's, that would be the 19th century wouldn't it?

  • @karlynjax actually Jane Austen wrote it in 1796 but it was published in, I believe, 1813. So it was set in the late 18th century :) but hey close enough! lol

  • I eventually decided to watch the film version (I had resisted the temptation until I felt that I could watch it with an open mind) I agree completely that it was a travesty not only to Jane Austens original work but to the fine acting of the 1995 version.

  • BBC will always pwn :D

  • His misfortunes... Yes, his misfortunes have been great indeed.

So love the way he says it))

  • That is one bitch slap in his face!

  • Re-JECTED!

  • My God this scene is intense!

    Brilliant and perfect acting indeed!

  • "In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My ... feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." (2.11.4)

  • @armanifan10101 Colin Firth "isn't that good"? Dear god.

  • Jennifer Ehle is an infinitely superior actress to Keira Knightley. Colin Firth is an outstanding Darcy, as are the screenplay, direction and devoted homage to Jane Austen's masterpiece.

  • I want to watch this version again this version is better than the movie because it's much longer ha ha I like the movie too

  • The 6 people who dislike are Wickhams

  • @5ilverhalo: I so agree with you.

  • Best Proposal Ever.

"Had you behaved in a more gentlemanlike manner" hahaha

    I love this scene

  • I love the movie - mostly because of Matthew MacFadyen and also Kiera Knightly is luminous as Lizzy but this is so much better because they had the luxury of time; using more of the original dialogue - here you can understand how insulting that proposal was - the movie, not so much.

  • WHOAA, he looks like Orlando Bloom at 1:11!!!

  • Comment removed

  • "If you had behaved in a more gentlemanlylike behavior' - great line!

  • I fell in love in Colin from this moment and since this movie he is my favorite actor

  • "And I BEG you, most fervently, to relieve my suffering...". Ok, I have melted into a little chocolate puddle.

  • I'm trying to like this..but SOMETHING is missing.Darcy's confession of love is hardly convincing...I prefer the 2005 adaptation although I do love Colin...

  • I love this version!

  • so before he tells her how much he loves her, he tells her how stupid it is to love her first? smart

  • reminds me of a picture i saw with the captions "What Darcy meant" and below it said " I want to push you up against this wallpaper and make most passionate love to you" lol

  • Poor Darcy, his pride was being hurt. One is my favorite scenes in this version

Jennifer Ehle plays so well, i love her character

  • I would have said yes the first time he proposed, despite his bad manners!!

  • i love this proposal even though your less than me and flawed breed im willing to look past that and marry you.

  • I wish you had included him pacing back and forth before he finally gets up his courage to propose ~ I love that part; it always reminds me of a caged tiger.

  • I thank you, Miss Austen for making me believe that men like Mr Darcy actually exist. (Sarcastic Mood)

  • @bonjovifan1992 men BETTER than darcy exist. like someone who won't think your not good looking enough for them to dance with, or insult ur family situation when they're proposing. really, when you find someone who is right for you and loves you for who you are, these fictional 'heart throbs' will seem a lot less attractive.

not to say darcy isn't swoon-worthy, but still, these are all flawed characters.

  • @sillychilli ACTUALLY, he said he wasnt ashamed of his feelings as they were "natural and just" plus social standing was important back then more than it is now. So it depends on time period u were born in and whether your prince charming is rich or not. AND Better men do not exist only the right man for you :-)

  • Everyone is entitled to their own opinion... but anyone who prefers the newer 2005 version clearly didn't read the original novel, nor do they understand 19th century etiquette. I LOVE how restrained and understated this performance is... you can just tell they are both trying so hard to hold in their anger and maintain some semblance of civility. You can see their social graces chipping away, just a little bit. Just perfect. :]

  • @5ilverhalo some people don't care about how true a movie is to a novel; preferring the 2005 version doesn't mean ignorance. i love both versions; though this one is truer to character and less "big movie"ish, if that makes sense at all :P

  • @FluffySugarCandy Definitely. I like this because it is so close to the novel, and the movie is good as a movie by itself.

  • @5ilverhalo ur right only I prefer the 2005 version because their acting seem more natural..in the 1995 one, it seems they are almost reding from a script

  • @5ilverhalo Actually, I have read the novel, and I do understand the etiquette of the time, and I prefer the 2005 version.

  • @5ilverhalo I agree!!!!!!

  • @5ilverhalo I completely agree with you, but Pride and Prejudice is situated in the 18th century, for Jane Austen lived then.

  • @5ilverhalo First you say that everyone is entitled to their opinion and then you make it clear that if they disagree with you, they are wrong. :D I have read Pride and Prejudice so many times that I have lost count and I do understand the 19th century etiquette. I like both the film and this, they both have their merits. I agree that the film has some mistakes, but when you have only two hours instead of five, you have to cut some corners.

  • @LivingDG couldn't have put it better myself :)

  • @LivingDG I think that P&P is impossible to have done well in two hours, so too many corners were cut and they should have just quit the film project. I like Keira Knightly in the pirate movies, LOVE her in "Bend it Like Beckham." Matthew Macfadyen was perfect in "Little Dorrit", but I did not find him to be Mr. Darcy material and I never felt a chemistry between them. May I recommend "Bride and Prejudice"? It and this miniseries are my favorite versions.

  • @5ilverhalo

    right on.

  • @5ilverhalo Could not have said it better!

  • @5ilverhalo I agree! The scene in the 2005 film was too emotional and passionate. In the movie, tension is released in this scene. They let it all out. Here, the tension is at its highest, which was the point of the scene.

  • @lpycb42 Plus Keira Knightly plays the same character in every movie...melodramatic bi-polar woman suffering PMS.

  • @Odette321 - lol

  • @5ilverhalo

    I couldn't agree more.

  • @5ilverhalo

I'm sorry, but I strongly disagree. I've read the novel, I like both versions, but I LOVE the 2005 version and prefer it over this version any time. There was little-to-no passion in this adaptation. I understand English etiquette very well, but when you're in love, it shows, no matter what. This version accurately follows the novel 100%, but the actors are too old and show no chemistry, while the new version is just the opposite. I just wanna make my own version, combining them.

  • @zd31894 You're quite right. The 2005 one does have more chemistry and actors to whose age I can relate to. Those are the only 2 boxes that version ticks . The 1995 version however has it all -substance, charm, wit, intelligence, humor, decorum, subtlety, CHARACTER and to top it all off this version radiates class. Somehow the age factor and the lack of "in your face" type of passion in this version does not seem to bother me at all. I find this version genuine and perfectly lovely.

  • @geneliatalk Very well expressed. The 2005 version does not give enough time to potray the subtleties of diff characters in the drama and the actors do not do justice to each character. Although Keira being more sprightly is suitable for the role of Eliza than Jennifer Ehle, she lacks the maturity. I dont think anyone has done proper justice to the character of Elizabeth so far.

  • top acting throughout

  • Darcy is my role model.

  • I will never eat at Swiss Chalet again for interrupting my P&P.

  • 4:00 OWNED. XD

  • Thank you for uploading. This is my favorite part of the movie.

  • This is my totally favorite part in this movie! I love Elizabeth!!! <3

  • @ZoieChan mine too :) i skip to this part just to watch the Fight :)

  • Thank you for posting! So much fun to relive one of my favorite story moments - but you cut to too short!! Lizzy needs to finish her verbal karate!! =)

  • this is it. best ever. and yes it keeps to the book, so does emma thompson's sense and sensebility[ largely] which shows that it can be done in a film too.

the p&p with keira knightly is just dredfull.

  • can someone subtitle this... i'm not a native speaker and i dont understand what they are saying

  • I prefer this version~ I have so much fun watching it~ I tried to watch the new version sometimes, but I can't, I keep watching the dresses and think "My god, didn't they search properly? " or the dialogs, they move so fast, they can't make it into the climax of the scene at all.

I love this version, is like reading the book~

  • I wish this movie started with the pacing back and forth forever before his first lines talkign to lizzie loL!

that's almost the best part of this scene. i love laughing at how awkward he is =) so cute lol

  • @xtremelovin so well put i have change my opinion on what is the best version...................your 'persuasion' ( wink wink ) was the key reason for my change of heart !!!

  • @xtremelovin like what

  • @xtremelovin the new one is without doubt awful!

  • LaLablink is correct. This 1995 version is more faithful to the book. I don't think Jane Austen intended to tell a story that included the dirty mess of everyday life. She intended it, I believe, to have the reader rise above the norm and, for a while at least, live in a cleaner, brighter, more idealized world. And that's what the book and the 1995 version have given us.

  • lol i remember a still from this scene that said SUBTITLES: THEY SURE WULD HAVE HELPED MR. DARCY sand below it said I WANT TO HOLD YOU UP AGAINST THE FLORAL WALL PAPER AND MAKE MOST PASSIONT LOVE TO YOU LOL

  • I feel sorry for Keira Knightly; she seems like a nice girl. She doesn't deserve to have to try to live up to this performance. No one does! I mean, if someone offered ME the role of Elizabeth Bennet I would hate them because HOW do you turn it down but HOW do you live up to so definitive a performance?

  • The newer one sucks. This verson is so much better because though the new version is shorter and fast paced and has its key moments. It seems to me that every moment in this movie is key. And my 14-year old brother strongly dislikes the new version whereas this version he is always ready to watch. This version is so much more real and stays true to the book. Elizabeth Bennet performs amazingly to Mr. Darcy's proposal. This is clearly a person she has liked for sometime, but casts him off anyway!

  • the newer one is way better

  • Comment removed

  • I think Colin Firth is the best Mr. Darcy!

  • to be honest, i usually like it when stuff sticks to the book, but i prefer the new adaptation. it's a better film, and overall the acting and actor are better

  • @hellieweird123 You must be kidding! The new movie was a DISASTER! So different from the book. The only good think there was Judy Dench as Lady Catherine de Bourgh

  • yeah! Duche! What a jerk. I'd be pissed too. Did he honestly expect her to say yes?

  • Yeah, she brought him down a peg or two! heehee! You go, Lizzy!

  • He is DAMN HOT when he's got this serious look on his face...

  • I'm sorry but towards th end of this scene, when Darcy basically confronts Elizabeath over her own prtide being hurt and the fact that he chose to be honest about his feelings rather than hide them is just immense and elizabeth cutting reply, if you had behaved in a more gentleman like manner, you can see the pain in Firth's eyes. wonderful

  • This adaptation knocks the socks of the Keira K version.

It's not only the ability to bring to life the characters as they have over a multi episode format, but also their intent to stick to the book that stands the production behind this adaptation apart from any others.

The film version was a mess, I watched it once and intend never to do so again.

  • @MissHuggyBear I agree entirely. This IMO is most like the book. The acting for every single character is beyond reproach, and that of Mrs. Bennett and Mr. Collins is simply superb. I have watched this series so many times, I have lost count!

  • i think that both this and the 2005 version are both amazing, though in different ways.

if they had a baby it would be a miracle child. :)
