Mary Wilson's vocal ability was really hurt by her years in the background. But having said that, without her, we wouldn't have had a 70s Supremes. Period.
Mary is fabulous on this medley. Her voice was suited for jazz and she's doing that now, to accolades. Gentlemen, enjoy Mary and the rest of the Supremes.
Mary and you have no familiarty with jazz if you thing this is an example of jazz singing.
Check out:
Cleo Laine, Dee Dee Bridgwater, Nneeena Freelon, Patti Austin, Rachalle Farelle, Diane Reeves or Shurr, Marlena Shaw for some wonderful examples of comtemporary Jazz Divas.
This wannabe Patti Labelle/starsearch mess would be BOOOed off stage by any serious jazz audience.
They're not talking about the choice of songs...they're talking about her style of singing. It's best suited for jazz and soft ballads, like this song, and, you should check out her video of "Here's to Life". She's got the voice!!! She has Diana beat by more than a mile stone!! Here's to Life proves that she has the talent to LEAD. I maintain my position. Mary and Flo were the backbone of the Supremes...Diana..just tinsel!!
Fun song, but...by 1975, shouldn't Mary have replaced this Ross-era Mary lead number with a different, more modern one? That's a long, same run for the same show song entry. ? Always was curious if Mary ever mentioned how Motown or she settled on selecting this for her to begin singing in the act's shows... She's always gorgeous. :)
Mr. Taddyd1, you don't know crap! Mary has the voice! This is the best rendition of the song she has ever done! Mary IS SUPREME!! She should've had more leads during the hey day of the original Supremes. She and Flo were the backbone of the group....Diana was just the tinsle!!
As a trained musician listening to someone sing so flat is painful; to think that she's actually charging money for it! Employing vocal tricks (which she executes in ameteur fashion) should come AFTER mastering rudimentary skills of singing (timing- pitch etc)which obviously still elude her.
It's a very sad shame that a MAJOR talent like Syreeta (who Stevie Wonder compared to Mariah in a recent TIME magazine tribute) was blocked from the Supremes by a mean-spirted no talent like Wilson.
Mary didn't block Syreeta from being in the Supremes out of a mean spirit. Jean Terrell had already been introduced as the groups new lead.....it was too late for Syreeta. And, as Mary stated, she didn't want another singer in the group who was just going to use it as a catapult to their own success. If anyone was mean spirited, it was Berry Gordy who at the last moment wanted to replace Jean with Syreeta, and when Mary said no, Berry emphatically stated...."then I wash my hands of the group.
Berry choose Syreeta but she was too young, thin, pretty, intelligent, hip and TALENTED for mary and pedro to exploit and cheat so she blocked Ms Wright/Wonder, thus eliminating Gordy's enthusiasm for the act from then on. Jean, Syreeta and Lynda would have been the deal. Imagine 3 killer singers, no lazy lip-synching baggage mary.
@rollsroycecooley1 Pedro ruined everything and he killed The Supremes, in 1976 Berry wanted to manage the group again, and Mary didnt wanna fire perdo
@taddyd1 : please...mary was all the things you credit to syreeta. she didn't want jean removed, because she felt jean was extremely talented, & the three women had a good rapport. why comment on a performers' videos that you clearly have an agenda against? we all see it, taddy...
Thank you for setting the record straight. On the last album Diana introduce Jean Terrell as her replacement. Barry had hidden motivate when he told Mary that he wanted to do away with Jean and bring Syreeta. He knew Mary would not go for it and this was his way of being done with the Suprems. The record shows that he clearly was interested in Diana 's career. Barry did a lot of people wrong at Motown. Mary could always sing she just never got that special break. Righ On Mary
You don't know much about the Supremes, do you? I've followed their careers for 40 some years. Mary and Flo appear on all recordings of the ORIGINAL Supremes up to the end of 1967. It was after Flo's departure that Motown either added or used other vocalists for the HARMONY vocals instead of Mary or Cindy. Diana is a great entertainer, but needs lots of backup....note all the backup vocals on her solo efforts!!!! These days her voice is even weaker!!
I wouldn't say "...didn't even appear on many Supremes recordings..." when referring to line-up including Mary and Florence. Now as for the Cindy and Mary line-up, that last statement may be creditable!
Your a complete ass. Im sorry i try to resist arguing in coments but this is just ridiculous and not one thing u said had any fact in it. At all. Your like someone said above me...who are you?..Her name is known your's is not..so get the hell over yourself if u dont like it keep your comments to urself
It's sad you resort to foul name calling but what else would we expect from a miss mary wilson fan? You guys need to form a Haters Anonymous group.

PS ROSS KICKED ASS AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL (Sold Out-7/25 & 7/26/O8) 18,000 screaming, dancing fans each nights. The VOICE has deepened but the rougher edges completley benefit her jazz renderings. Her versions of "Don't Explain" & "Fine & Mellow" were other-worldly in their beauty and passion!!! AND.. Sista lookin & movin too good!!
Mary Wilson's "smooth-satiny" contribution to the Supremes coupled with her "polished" presence has been grossly understated and undervalued, but SUPREME she is and always will be! By the way she's speaking Japanese!
I thought some of you might be interested in seeing Mary perform this song 6 years earlier with Diana and Cindy. Search for: Supremes Mary Wilson Solo -- hope you enjoy it!
People were hating her in their comments on that clip though she did good if you see that clip Diana seems mad at Mary for taking lead just that one time just see it and you will know what i mean
Absolutely wonderful. Did you notice she was singing without a microphone at the end? Isaw her sing like that with Cindy and Scherrie in 1975. Thanks for letting us see it.
I like the variety Mary Cindy and Scherrie brought. Mary was a great singer and deserved to step up to more leads as the original group member. And Cindy was clearly under-rated and proved herself on her leads. Of course girlfriend sang with Patti Labelle and you know that rubbed off on her. And Scherrie - it's a shame she isn't known outside of Supreme fans as she has a killer voice. The 70's ladies deserve a lot of credit - that's *my* story and I'm stickin' to it. JOP
Actually, Mary pursued her former background singers. Karen Ragland responded by counter-suing, claiming that Mary caused her to miss out on revenue because of the litigation.
Yes and Wilson had to pay up! how ridiculous! She should always have had all her back up singers (Female & Male) sign a contract saying they will not use the name under any circumstances.
I agree. Wilson has a history of unwise business decisions. Point is, she tried to do something about it as opposed to letting "background singers in her solo act get away with working as "Supremes" on their own." Nevertheless, thanks for the posting the clips from this concert.
Ok cool to hear Mary sing this but my favorite is VIKKI CARR with this number. I do like other Mary vocal tunes. I give this a LIKE.
