Klez, how did the construction of the medieval lyre differ, if it all, from the more ancient, semitic variant ? Would it have sounded different? Also, what would have been the default instrument for which this piece (as well as the other one written by Richard Coeur de Lion) was written? A lyre, harp? Perhaps some other medieval, stringed instrument?
Finally, would you mind identifying the beautiful images in this video, particularly the paintings and the illuminated manuscripts?
I think the type of lyre used in the early Middle Ages was of the square Sutton Hoo Saxon type - not entirely sure on this point! This tune may originally have been accompanied on the small Medieval harp (very similar to the Celtic Harp). I'm not sure if the Lute was yet widely used - I think the Lute was in fact imported/adopted from the Middle East during the mindless murder of the Crusades...at least SOME good came from this brutal era! The images are all the result of Google searching!
Since I've now reached my own "Middle Ages", I thought this little series of videos of music actually FROM the Middle Ages would be a good way of celebrating! ;o)

Amazing! The young David playing to Saul would have sounded like this.

when i listen to this, I imagine a bard playing his lyre and singing a poem or hymn for a medieval audience
