@ArduinoAlan: I had about 16 square feet of AL foil laid out on the floor. Obviously not a very good RF ground but it worked fine for this smaller coil. Bigger coils need a more 'real' ground, such as grounding rods, to work properly. You can ground a coil to your home's ground, but I've heard this can sometimes cause problems with other appliances that are also plugged into that ground.
Very nice, - if ever I could understand how this Tesla stuff works. I am not a stupid to elektronics, of couse I know transformers, I know the special cicruit with R/T/C/D and a 3 coil transformer how to get very high DC voltage out of little DC Voltage like with some small ion generators, but I never got the clou out of the Tesla coils.
Somebody can explain the priciple of such a coil? Is it something like self "up wobbling and amplifying" cicruit???
I looked up on (german) wiki and at least it is no mystery to me any more.
In short words, it seems to me like a combination of a radio transmitters and a radio receiver next to each other with a loose (air) coupling that work also as a transformer and interact with each other on a HF and a normal transformer basis.- Very clever I must say, and Mister Tesla should be far ahead of time in his days.
@XELA2T: All I meant by "google is you friend" is that when ever your not sure about something or are looking for information about it you should try to google it first (meaning use the search engine google), you can get a lot of good information their. Anyways, I'm glad you figured it out.
Ah ok, normally I am doing it this way all the time, - don`t ask me why not with the the Tesla coil. - This system is really clever though I think it is not the most easy thing to get it work properly.
my neon sign transformer burnt out with only a few seconds test before i hooked up the rfi filters now im depressed i was getting foot long sparks on my flat pancake coil
Google Tesla coil. You'll get a huge amount of information on how to build them. Start small and work you way up. A 2" dia. secondary with a 12kv 30ma NST would be a good start. You'll understand what I'm talking about after you do some research. Good luck, and BE CAREFUL.
Let me know if you get it to work. I've tried it a couple times and usually the relays don't last long. They start binding up quickly. If your looking for easy flyback drivers try looking up "ZVS flyback driver" on google. The ZVS driver is very simple and quite robust.
ive had good luck with relays i used to have the problem wiht the terminals on a relay binding up and not working but then i used a ballast resistor and a capacitor from a car and that ended the problem ive been using the same relay for over a year only had to resurface the contact points once i just want to power everything with a relay as a personal challenge to myself which so far has worked i just havent tried a flyback yet ill post a video when i do
well your using a ZVS driver why not change the driver to a tl494 to drive the flyback? I dont know if it will work but im gonna give it a try. How big are your arcs from your flyback when your tesla coil is unhooked? My arcs are more purple?
I'm sure that you could get that to drive a flyback, but I think if you audio modulated the signal to the flyback that when hooked up to the tesla coil it would "filter" out the audio. The tank circuit would probably see to that.
Check out my video, "ZVS Driven Flyback Using New Driver-1-." That's more or less the same thing that was powering this coil.
Well got mine going, does not compare to yours! mine is just slung together tho. My mmc cap is 5.87nf and 24kv. my primary is 12awg wire at 4 turns and sec is about 300 of 27 awg. you can hear the audio in the flyback but the damn spark gap is so load all you hear is that. got any pointers?
I just completed a working prototype and had problems. I find the greater the capacitance of the topload the lower the frequency, additionally an inaccurate capacitor value,or damaged capacitor can lead to the problems you are having. Just a suggestion I hope you try.
Great Job! Im getting ready to make one, I have already made a plasma speaker so now im ready to tackle this! Im going to add audio to mine o and great job once again!
Do you have a schematic for your flyback driver and how you conected it to your tesla coil? I have a coil about the same size but can't get nice streamers like yours. Please message me on my page. Great work!!
Thanks for the nice comment! If you google "ZVS flyback driver" in images and you'll get several schematics of the driver circuit. Hooking it up to the Tesla Coil is pretty simple. You can google search "Tesla Coil schematic" in images and you should get several pictures of hooking it up. As for tuning the coil, you can PM me with what your having trouble with and I would be glad to help you tune it.
Just trying to make ppl aware that when they work with this stuff it has the capability. And I'm sure if you were to come into contact with the + and - of the caps it would be very bad. Although the chance of touching both at the same time with each arm would be very low.
What's your cap, like a couple nanofarad charged to a few kv? Probably in the +/- 1 joule area. This will give you a noticeable jolt, nowhere near lethal. Once you get up to around 15 J is when you need to fear for your life (but it helps to do that with any hv source).
5.0 nF @ 20 kV. Although I can't be sure of the exact voltage this would most likely be a pretty close guess judging on how far it will jump. I've got another setup with this coil that uses 10 nF worth of bear bottle caps, but really that is pushing the limits of my primary/second insoluation. I've got larger coils & NST to run them but just haven't gotten around to setting them up and filming. Some day though.
Well a tesla coil with a big nst 12kv at 60ma uses an above resonant capacitor that is 19nf has enough to kill you and it is only 1.368 joules. Reason being that it will charge and discharge rapidly. Or maybe at that point it will bypass the cap and the transformer will kill you '~'
Google seach spark gap tesla coil, you'll find a huge amout of information on the idea behind how it works and how to build them. I'd suggest you start with something small like this, keep in mind though, the capacitors on this coil could easily kill you if you were to come into contact with any part of the tank/primary side of the coil. Although this small coil is pretty safe compaired to the larger ones.
how did you ground the secondary coil?

@XELA2T: It's an air core, resonating transformer. Try going to wikipedia and searching for "tesla coil". Remember google is your friend.

The Tl494 is powering my plasma speaker but yea the signal might get filtered out but its worth a try. I ordered parts for the driver your using.

I doubt the caps on a coil this size would be able to kill you unless you have a pacemaker.
