Here is an awesome music video by a band that recently featured the them playing Asteroids on an ATARI 2600 in their video at the end of it. It's very 80's and kind of creepy!
you know what? I finally found which of the game variations is the one which best resembles the arcade original: the 4th one. (with both the difficulty switches set on A)
so you can have asteroids that, when hit, scatter in all directions, an extra life every 10.000 points, hyperspace and, last but not least, satellites and UFOs shooting at you!!!
Since Mark lost the packaging, here is my recollection of what the instructions said. You are a Space Ranger, or something like that (presumably Buzz Lightyear's father) and you are patrolling the neutral zone (well maybe I got that part from Star Trek) when suddenly your detector circuits light-up showing that asteroids are approaching. In other words, you are screwed.
It is often over-looked that the real reason the UFO is attacked you is because they had watched an episode of "AVGN" and watched revenge on the human race.
Games back then had so cool and simple names like Combat or Asteroids. But now they have to make games with names a whole sentence long (Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 WTF)
Instead of the useless "hyperspace" feature, I always opted for the "flip". It was an alternate game mode on the 2600 version that fliped your ship in the opposite direction intstantly. This came in handy way more than hyperspace. It also had a "shield" mode too, if my memory serves. And you never pressed the button to activate them (that was for firing). I think you just pressed up. Pressing down thrusted the ship. I can't believe I can still remember all this. It was almost 30 yrs ago!
is there any real video of an actual asteroids cabinet? while the 2600 version is cute a real vector with the original display is absolutely beautiful. The points of light like the one you shoot from your ship is so bright and cool looking. Just saying. PEACE
I remember playing this game as a kid. It was quite addictive despite the lesser graphics and simplistic theme. Nowadays it seems that most software companies are more interested in creating sequels as it is unprofitable to make games with high replay value. Now a lot of games depend on online play for excitement. Developers can take the lazy way out and put responsibility in the hands of gamers instead of making the games as fun as they could be.
Online games are ok, but I find they've taken away the real fun of the point of video games which is NO RULES. Gamers make up their won rules online and freak out if you don't play right, or are a noob or don't follow server rules which really can take the fun out of it, or tyey ban you etc which defeats the purpose of video games in a lot of ways.
How did you hyper space when there was only the one red fire button? how did it know the difference between wanting to hyper space or wanting to fire?
It's fine on default difficulties, but it's pretty easy to roll over to 999,999 without a lot of trouble. You should see what this game gets like on mode 12 or 14!
this game is the best. one of my favorite games for the atari 2600. soo addicting, i sat for 3 hours before playing this game but it seemed like at least 30min..nice review
What's great about this game (and the 7800 port) is the fact you can still use the same tactics the arcade machine had to acquire a massive number of ships and get a high score. So what if the mechanics aren't 100% to the arcade, it's still an impressive port for the 2600.
Asteroids is a classic game, though this version is a joke. The 7800 and arcade versions have the asteroids and ufos flying from all different directions. This version, the asteroids fly from the upper and lower parts of the screen and they nearly move in the same pattern. That and the graphics are sorely lacking. And if you go into hyperspace, you can suicide even if there are no asteroids coming your way. This version, in my opinion, is of lesser quality than the others.
My mom played this version all the time as a kid. She rolled the scores once, meaning she went from 0 to 999,999 and then back down to zero with another asteroid explosion. Man i love my mom.
My folks once played Mario Bros on my 7800 all night after I went to sleep. They got to Phase 103 or something and were like, "Hey, why's it getting lighter outside?! WHAT?!!! WE'VE BEEN PLAYING THIS ALL NIGHT?!!!! WE HAVE WORK IN A FEW HOURS!!!!!" LOL. Gotta love retro-gaming. =D

Did he say that it transports you into a massive-ass troid? Whatever a troid is, it's gotta' be big?

Fun but too easy. 5000 points for a 1-up is too generous. The game never ends!

Cannot say this for many Atari 2600 games especially Pac-Man but this looks better then the Arcade version.

The use for destroying the "Harmless asteroids" is explained in the PS1 remake.

Depending on the difficulty level they could go diagonally, faster, break into more pieces, and have UFOs.

Thats not right! the button is your fire button. to go into hyperspace you pull back on the joystick.

The 1999 remake use a ship similar to the box art for this game. Homage time, I guess. ;)

Asteroids is one of the best arcade games around. Only real competitor is Berserk.

This game has over 50 different variations:
- Zig zag asteroids
- Shields instead of hyperspace
- "Flip the ship" instead of hyperspace
- Or no special power
- Without UFO
- With UFO (very difficult)
- Invisible asteroids
- And of course two player versions

it's the Novice/Expert switch on the Atari 2600 console itself for the UFOs. It needs to be on expert.

morgangamer22 3 years ago
you said "push the button for hyperspace"...which is wrong.
that was to fire.
hyperspace was "pulling back on the joystick".
(if in that mode) otherwise it could be a shield.
I'm just sayin.
the facts man..just statin facts.
StupidEarthlings 3 years ago 17
Yes, that is correct. I slipped that one up. For the 2600 version of asteroids you pull back for hyperspace -CGRHD
