Hydrodynamics The vapor cone forms as the shockwaves approach the speed of sound and the pressure drops and the shockwaves move rearward. A visible vapor cone has nothing to do with the aircraft breaking the barrier. It simply means that its getting close. That was a sonic boom heard in the video.
also it seems that people get confused about the "Prandtl-Glauert singularities". if they are conical AROUND the aircraft it's indicative of a shock wave- ie at least transonic (sound barrier IS being broken in small localized areas of the ship). you can have similar Prandtl-Glauert singularities from a pressure drop due to high g maneuvers. these usually aren't conical looking. cool pictures and good explanations are abundant on the internet so i stop here.
hellooo! between 30-60 meters altitude a plane at supersonic speed blows everything apart...including humans. Are you insane? and something else: if that plane was above sound barrier it coudn't do that acrobacy in the end. it is imposible(high G forces)
haha, yeah maaaannn, there'd be body parts everywhere maaaaannn!!!! heads would explode!!! helloooo? it's a sonic boom, not a nuclear blast! he was at least transonic untill he pulled up and lost some speed. as far as an f14 goes that's not aerobatic.
edcoondog, i try to explain something scientific to you, but now i see you are some kind of stupid...sorry, but i can't put you in other category. i repeat...betwen 30-60 m most things blow up. above 60 m let's say......300 m windows blow up
ok then mr. wizard. show me a vid of most things "blowing up" because of a sonic boom. and please don't try to "explain" things scientific to me without some sort of credentials. i'm a pilot and an A&P mechanic and have been around alot of jets and choppers in the last 12 years.
oh, really? sorry, but don't seem to. maybe the america planes are UFO's you know...hehe. it seems to me that you are a liar...don't know...but i know certain things...and if you are a pilot, and don't know about the power of that shock wave, that is so great...then....you know...i can't tell you anymore
i've seen the concorde boom. it's at a high altitude so you hear the good crack of the sound barrier but it's not followed by the noise of engines because the engine noise dissipated over the distance. on these vids, the engine noise is almost as loud as the sonic boom. which is why it just comes as a rush of sound.
ohh...but imagine...if that concorde will be at low altitude such as this plane, and you down there, you will be broken apart. if there, at a high alt the sound was so powerfull, here above ground level will be insuportable...even more. what i try to tell you, is that i know, because my father worked in the army and i know many pilots and some of this stuff.
thank god your father wasn't a doctor! would you try to operate on people?
the shock wave doesn't have the same dissipation as normal sound. they're almost as loud from a distance as they are close up. which is why it's not allowed to be broken over pop. areas regardless of alt. i've never heard anywhere of people blowing up from it. the occasional window or eardrum, yes. but "most things blowing up"? i think not.
You're a moron. You could even SEE the air pressure built up, then the the jet pass through it, which is what creates the sonic boom. It won't blow out windows from miles away. I suggest you know what you're talking about before trying to argue or nay-say.
Listen to me child. You have never heard a sonic boom in your life. Because the military stopped super sonic flight in US air space DECADES ago. The reason they did so was because they were inundated with law suits from civilians who had their windows blown out from miles away.
@ohrian actually that's sort of a myth. sonic booms are definitely very very loud, but they don't automatically break glass as much as people would like the think.
@analogWeapon I grew up in the 50's and 60's when the military routinely broke the sound barrier over civilian homes. So many windows were broken that they had to restrict where military aircraft could break the sound barrier. That would explain why you have never experienced a real sonic boom up close (unless you are military yourself). Think of a lightning bolt hitting yards from you. That is a sonic boom. I never said they "automatically" broke windows.
@ohrian i understand. i put words in your mouth. sorry about that. i was just trying to address the common misconception that there was something beyond simple amplitude that made glass more susceptible in the vicinity of a compression event like a sonic boom. i'm guessing that besides the fact that military stopped supersonic flight near civilian areas, the main reason so many windows were broken back then was more due to rattling and striking sills than actual pressure waves.
The cloud is visible only if the flight is supersonic AND hygrometric and pressure conditions are appropriate. That's why the cloud is only visible during a short time, when conditions are good.
So the white cloud and boom don't mean that the plane broke the sound barrier at the time it appeared, but only that the plane was at supersonic speed during the flyby.
Sonic boom doesn't happen only when a plane breaks the sound barrier.
During all the time of a supersonic flight, a spectator can ear the "sonic boom", which is the shockwave created by the plane while moving throught the air. This shockwave is present during all the time of a supersonic flight.
EVERYBODY - THAT WAS A SONIC BOOM. Go to any good website about sonic booms and it will tell u that once a sonic boom occurs, a cloud will appear just like in the vid...
@KoolSmartAzn Vapor cones don't just happen when an aircraft breaks the sound barrier. They can form at a slower speed. They just form because the air pressure around the aircraft drops dramatically. There was no sonic boom noise. That sound was just the plane itself.
This sounds like a real sonic boom to me, and this is coming from someone that knows the difference. Here, the sounds comes at the microphone all at once and sounds more like a shot than an engine roar. That's a boom.
I'm not sure....didn't sound much like a sonic boom, but cool video, even if they don't break the sound barrier, it still is an awesome sound to hear in real life.
To me it did sound like a sonic boom, I could be wrong so don't hold me to it. I've heard these before. This plane was clearly going Super Sonic. I've seen and heard planes going Trans-Sonic especially the Blue Angels with their "Sneak" tactic.. almost a totally different sound altogether.

that is a real sonic boom..
why do you think it made the cone and the characteristic 'boom'.
and as for breaking apart, that's rediculous.

Oh, and if it wasn't a sonic boom. Explain the sudden burst of sound that's louder than the jet engines?
DaroffApFire 4 years ago
That was the normal sound of any high performance jet as it passes by you. Try going to an air show and listen for your self.
The sound is louder as it passes because that's where the engines thrust is.
ohrian 4 years ago 2
that sound is because of afterburners + high speed. and that conic wave isn't necesarly to be for supersonic flight

Not a sonic boom. Sound is just becuase plane is nearing the speed of sound, and thus you can't hear it until it comes close enough.
ACMilan33 5 years ago
makes sense to me.
whiterhino272 5 years ago
Incorrect. The aircraft does not have to be supersonic for these "clouds" (they're actually called "Prandtl-Glauert singularities") to occur.
