I'm really glad this exists. So little footage of the Wipers. Apparently Greg didn't like to video taped. I got to see their final show at La Luna in Portland several years ago, and it was sorely underattended. They didn't announce it as being their last show, and I'm sure a lot of people kicked themselves for missing it. And, yes, it was amazing. Really made me understand those later albums, which was mainly the material they played..
@ryanstamen you can only get them at shows or online, and they stay true to there punk rock influences, which metallica really regrets to due. I am a fan of both but Melvins>Metallica
@ryanstamen Melvins don't wanna be anyone their a little more mature then that, and in my opinion much more original, Metallic rules (First 4 albums) but then It got weak, Melvins have always been original and will always be original because they dont give a fuck about mainstream appeal. Whens the last time you saw a Melvins t-shirt at a rock store?
(I know this is belated, but) I'm sorry I misunderstood your comment about people hearing about the Wipers through Nirvana, geinsbourgh. I thought you meant that it made them losers or something if they heard of them through Cobain. That's how I had heard of them (and due to the Melvins' cover of "Youth of America").
@geinsbourgh it sure did because I discovered The Wipers through Nirvana and now I love "Land of the Lost" as much as I used to love Nevermind back in the day. I even have World Of Warcraft guild named "Wipers" wahoo!
They should be in the R& R 'hall of fame'!! - why aren't they!? - I was fortunate to see the Wipers Live once in Hollywood. LA. about 4 yrs. before this- & can tell ya' - as Great as they sound on records & vids. - live, are like this x1000!!!
Nope. I've been into the Wipers ever since I got the Youth of America album during the summer. I actually only just learned that Kurt Cobain was into them.
realistically speaking, that's how a lot of folks will probably stumble upon them...it's a good thing if they do...christ, they were hard to hear when they were around, unless you lived in the northwest--I was there...
Why does it matter where people heard of the Wipers? Does it make them noobs or something if they heard about them through Nirvana? Quit being pompous, geinsbourgh.
Jimmy Hendrix of punk-yeah you bet!I have been in three shows (in different periods)and his guitar playing was becoming a skyrocketing affair! If you care about the "feel" of the rythm
and loads of feedback loops-he's your man!He plays "dirty" and mean,he doesn't care about always hitting the right note-he's after your
you asshole, fukin teen, if ever see you on the street im gonna beat the shit out of you, good charlotte are the king of pop, bullshit, garbage, buisness, shit, what is pop, i can assure you that is not music, they were even born wen the genius of greg sage was breaking the music as it was. if i ever see that you say somthing as stupid as what you wrote im gonna find you and kick your ass. fuking youth thinks that they now about music you dont now shit. peace.
allrigth men sorry, a felt really insulted by that, i love wipers too thats wy i felt so angry sorry men, anyway that wasnt for you jajajaja allrigth peace and love long live wipers.
it is very difficult to find wipers footage. greg did not like video cameras at his shows. while i respect that, its a shame because it was so great to watch him play.
I had my videocam at a show in '89 (Rocket Club, Providence, "The Circle" tour) and was all set to tape it. My friend asks the bass player if it's OK and he said he'd prefer not, so I respected that. I did get an audio of the show though, sadly it's been lost. Saw them many times in '87 and '89, great great band - probably my favorite band ever. I do still have a complete bootleg of a show in 1987 at Maxwell's, Hoboken.
Thanks very much to anyone who posts real footage of the Wipers no matter what the quality but it would be so great to see something with really good sound and picture. Anyone got anything?
yeah, it's true, after listening to the wipers, nirvana looks like a cover band, and i say this as someone who's a member on a couple nirvana forums and has every version of every song available, excluding concerts.
I was at this show no BS. I got into the Wipers because of the Nirvana covers and me and my friend Donny started really digging them. Anyways we kept seeing this guy at the local coffee shop that looked like Sage. One day Donny finally gathers up the nerve to ask him if was indeed him. It was. We all became friends and he even recorded some of Donnys' stuff. Ahh the memories.
One of the most salient reasons why I started LoTek (in 1978) was because I was walking past a bar in Portland called The Long Goodbye - out on the street I could hear the most amazing guitar with band playing a song I could barely make out the words for...it was The Wipers doing UP IN FLAMES. None of us had any idea how we were going to make more than $5 per show, but that didn't matter. A lot different era than now unfortunately. Never give up on your passion for creativity!
WOW awesome! Just to tell you i love "running dog" by you guys. Yea i will never give up my passion for creativity, creating music art is what makes me feel so good.
Lol if you are serious then that just shows how much Cobain ripped them off i mean musically and with the guitar thing!! Look Nirvana is my second favorite band but i realise that they ripped ALOT from other bands in specific--> Wipers, Stooges and Vaselines!! But still Nirvana kicks ass!! But so do these guys damn the Wipers could/should have been a HUGE BAND!!
Agreed!!! It's an amazing record. Love the guitar tone on the original vinyl on songs like Doom Town, Over the Edge, and Messenger, etc. I'm biased since I'm a fellow PDXer, but Portland does kick ass. I've been to many shows in Seattle, like the city, but the clubs were filled w/ dudes in Dockers and Sweaters...bizarre. I miss Pine Street(LA LUNA), X-ray, EJs, and the trough in the bathroom at Satyricon!!!
That was just amazing, this is one song that really makes me feel so... how to say this... it`s just amazing... no more words... just AMAZING... thanks, and again thanks ryanstamen.
New wife and I saw the Wipers in Portland at 13th Street Precinct in 1983 along with Napalm Beach and (I think) some others. Immediatly went out and bought a Wipers album (But couldn't find any Napalm beach).
13th Street was a a small club but it was a great night. Saw Oingo Boingo (original lineup) a few weeks earlier at Luis LaBamba. Portland has always has a great music scene - but Seattle got all the credit.
Greg Sage was one of the rare few who truly operated outside of the music industry as much as humanly possible. Even during the early 90's when he started to get offers from majors after being around since the late 70's with the wipers, opted out, and continued to stay true to himself in disregard for anything commodified...The Wipers are one of my all time faves...
I've seen them in three dif. shows in Greece.Sage is a guitar-riff god.Rock guitar as should be played, from the heart! He's pretty good in lyrics too(remember window shop
Without Greg Sage there would be no Nirvana, no Pearl Jam, no Screaming Trees ... half of the bands that made it "big" in the last 20 years owe a debt to sage and The Wipers that they aren't even aware of.

Sage is sometimes compared to Hendrix. Hendrix's instrumental, Peace In Mississippi, reminds me a lot of Sage's use of dive bomb chords.

Hendrix, Sage, Cobain. Three lefthanded guitarists from the Pacific Northwest who each fronted power trios. Coincidence? ;)
