  • I ENJOY UR EXCELLENTS PERFORMANCES AT VWTNCHANNEL ALL THE SUNDAYS. ¡¡¡.VERY HAPPY 2012 FOR U DIANE BISH!!! I INVITE YOU TO VISIT MY MUSIC CHANNEL, AND SEE MY ORGANCHORAL "EL ESPÍRITU DE DIOS SOBRE LAS AGUAS" DARLING DIANE. I AM VERY HAPPINESS OF KNOW YOU BECAUSE YOU PRESENT ALL THE ORGANS IN EUROPE, AND THE CHRISTMAS PROGRAMS,ARE SO WONDERFULLS

,,THANKS DIANE FOR THAT! MARIO CARDOSO,COMPOSER.

  • Bravo. Best performance of the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. This is perfection. Why does everyone else feel the need to race through this wonderful piece? Playing this as fast as you can takes so much away from this piece that it does this work of art an injustice. Bravo Diane.

  • nice; but poor quality

  • Diane is brilliant, I loved this and I love the St Bavo organ.

  • Diane Bish always amazes me each time I see her perform. Such grace, command, and gifted talent.

  • Yay St. Bavos! :D

I just saw that organ this summer! bought a CD of some recorded music there, it had this song on it!

  • and she's smokin hot too.....

  • I love Miss Bish's concerts, what a super talented lady.

My favourite BWV 565 on youtube is Karl Richter on that treasured 200 year old baroque organ in Germany.

  • intereting coments. me personally, just love the performanceand theroaring of that magnificent instrument. my god those pipes can sing! well done !

  • The 25 people that dislike this video must be "rock" fans, lol.

  • @SwingItLikeMoe You'd be surprised at how many rock fans flock to these Toccata videos. Metalheads, Grunge, Death, Black Metal, Goth, etc.

  • @jrssjdca Yeah I can see a Gothic person listening to this type of music, lol.

  • @SwingItLikeMoe They do enjoy it!

  • @jrssjdca That's good to know.

  • I don't have the 'literalist' attitude that Biggs had. for most of the ime since Bach's death the BWV565 has been played Interpretively. It is only recently in history the strict transcription has been enforced. That was instituted by Toscanini, Schweitzer and others because they good reason to believe that the 'true and original ways' would; Nyrigazy was a paraiah and only Hollywood studios would hire him. Besides, these master can have it their own way and not bore us. Its Show Business.

  • The very first notes of the Toccata are played in a very "personal" way, a wrong one i think. Look the score please.

  • I saw her on Tv, and had to find her- that's awesome that I found this video- but the one I'm looking for- she was in France and playing all the organs at all the important churches & was filming awesome scenery- does n anyone know of this video?

  • Look at this instrument! I wish I was there to feel the sounds! My Dad and I watched this lady when I was kid.

  • She plays: DA DA DA, but it should playd: dadada!!!!! xD

  • I'm incredibly envious of the team that recorded/witnessed this performance. The internet will never replicate the experience of sitting in these echoing halls...

  • @madhatt3r111 so true- i was lucky enough to see her play years ago- it was truly an experience i will never forget!!! When people asked me-how was it the performance? i told them , i felt as if i was sitting in heaven..... and told them..it can not be explained in words; you must experience it for yourself. she is truly gifted.

  • Wow! That cathedral resonates forever. I'm sure Diane had her work cut out for her playing that beast. Like 1104eoak said, it takes a bit of strength to play a tracker, especially if you have a lot of stops pulled. If you don't press the key down fully, it's liable not to sound the pipes properly and be slightly out of tune one way or the other. Playing a 2 or 3 hour concert on one of these would be sheer torture, LOL! Nice job Diane... oh and your friend Wilma S. says hi. :))

  • Bravo Diane Bish!

  • the beginning of 2nd part reminds me of literal "bach"

  • 22 People thinks Justin Beiber is better!

  • @Nefus1988 jb dreams of being this good some day-there is no comparison. Diane has been playing all her life- stick to what u know.

  • Yes...Diane is the biz...and I know many of her interpretations.... but HERE...she has no feel...she is simply going through the rigors of this instrument:)

  • @maadmaestro Let's say, with so many years of experience playing pipe organs like her... a simple bwv 565 turns out to be kind of ... cliché, if you know what I mean.

  • @starbreez3 Point taken...wonder if Papa Bach was the same;)

  • Now that is a real instrument, none of that modern electronic crap on it. Great video!

  • The King of Amaaaement is correct. This is a "tracker" organ...no pistons. If there are more changes than can be handled by the three keyboards, normally two trained musicians stand on either side of the organist and set the stops as needed. Also, watch her fingers, this is NOT an electronic organ. The keys open the pipes by directly pulling on wires that control the pipe openings. You really have to have strength to play one of these organs. Congrats and all admiration goes out to her.

  • favolosa

  • i must say this woman is awesome but i hate her interpretation of the beginning of this piece :(

  • that organ looks old as hell! i think the keys are even made of ivory

  • @MrZachgonz

Coz it is old. They finished building it in 1738. Händel had a go at it in 1740 and 1750. So did a then 10 year old mozart in 1766.

  • where on earth are the pistons???

  • @TheKingOfAmazement lol real organs dont have pistons!

  • She just needs to be dressed all in black. Other than that, WOW!

  • Hi Ms. Bish - wow, so cool that you have your YT channel here. I remember seeing you perform various times over the past (ahem) years - the first time I think in the 70's at Anthony?? KS, and then several other times in Wichita, KS, usually at UMC. My mom went to school with you in High School. I'll let her know about your channel!

  • this is the way this song has to be played not on a cheap keyboard or with a guitar or violin only on an Organ

  • GRANNY CAN ROCK!

  • not bad for a woman

  • great technique and wonderful sound! Love the instrument with its draw stops at each side - assume this would have been very much the sort of organ that Bach himself played - so stop changes are difficult without an assistant!

  • Quel femme ! Une de ses très rares interprètes qui arrivent à nous faire ressentir autant d'émotions ! Merci beaucoup :)

  • Hauntingly beautiful! Bravisima!!

  • just discovered Diane Bish, what a lady, absolutely superb. Cant stop watching and listening to this wonderful piece of Bach.

  • just discovered Diane Bish, what a lady, absolutely superb. Cant stop watching and listening this beautiful piece of Bach.

  • Who ever the 19 people are that decided that to thumbs down this video can not fully appreciate the rare musicality and distinction of diane bish and the complexity of this polyphonic piece and the over all voice of the organ and the meaning of the composition its composer wanted to portray.

  • @JapaneseBox7 No criticism intended but two minor and humble points here. Polyphonic simply means consisting of many notes or sounds so I hardly think that the reverse term "monophonic" would be fitting therefore making the term "polyphonic" somewhat redundant. Also, any name, surname and family begins with uppercase letters. You did make a very fine point, however.

  • Sir(s): If I may, at this Date and Time state here and attest to the full how fine this Sense of Music is in this Concert performed with such an Accomplished American Lady in the Personage of Ms. Diane BISH altogether of the candle-lit setting in HAARLEM, THE NETHERLANDS. I would think there shall not much to out-do nor rival the truest work and commitment of this Most Accomplished Musician of Our Time. Thank you. Have a Nice Day. Godspeed. --JAMES HOWARD DAY (JR.), "LeJean" SATX 78202 U. S. A.

  • Very well done, I just find it kinda funny that there really isn't any subtle way of practicing on one of these things.

  • @TheAsclepius Depending on the organ if you just pull out a very few stops, it doesn't noise nearly so much. I practice when no one else is in the building. But yes mistakes are very LOUD!

  • grannys got skillz

  • She is great! This organ has a really warm and sweet sound not too aggressive like other organs do... and of course the church "natural reverb" adding so much depth! wish i was there experiencing it live!

  • i think somethimes the lady plays a little bit ti sloy. but after 1.30 is best version ever!

  • An organ shoe is the pedal that is mounted on the lower backboard and is used to control the volume among other things. An organist also wears special shoes to play the pedal keys Can't do it with high heels.

  • In another organ video, I saw someone refer to "organ shoes". Is there such a thing, really? If so, what makes it an "organ" shoe?

  • Ah man, that's awesome!

  • omg

congratulations, very very unbeliable and beautifull,

    thanks for upload

  • I love the playing and the candles. Ver baroque. All she needs is a huge wig and a nice dress and she is ready to dance a menuett!

  • Diane Bish is simply incredible....breathtaking! Thanks for sharing!

  • how much does that pianao cost?

  • @pcvietnameseboi

    1. Not piano, but organ

    2. A construction of an organ like this would cost somewhere around a couple million dollars

  • a little slow and the trills at the beginning could have been faster, but very good!

  • lol, i remember watching her live at the college i went to. she did this crazy song that had her doing glissandos with the foot pedals. it was AWESOME!

  • She looks crazy in this outfit but boy does she have talent!

  • Truly a master's work on BWV 565, taking into consideration both the organ's capabilities and the long, complex reverberation of the Bavokerk's sanctuary.

  • what a placer must be play in that organ

  • Wonderful performance, although she played a rather eccentric mordents at the very beginning. (For all those who would retort, I've played this piece since I was in my teens).

  • Look at the size of those stops!

  • i want to be that lady's friend..... :)

  • I wonder how much an organ like that costs hehe!

  • This is creepy, somehow in a warm friendly way. I bet being there is spine-tingling though.

  • The pedal is a bit to loud, it sounds not in harmony with the rest of the composision.

You can cleary hear the Bazuin 32 and the Prestant 32 bouncing of the walls.

  • Good technique.

A pity, Diane has add her own thing: the very first notes must NOT play stacatto, she doesIf, yoy break down the whole music of Bach

  • #Excellent. Some of the sounds of this instrument are amazing, and Diane gives a good performance as always.

  • im learning htis amazing piece on the piano, and afterwords i will begin to learn to play the organ, as i will have mastered the piano.

  • gotta love the decay...

  • LOL HOW NUTS IS THIS LADY

    old lady.

    full candles next to organ.

    its sooo creepy!

  • Great interpretation and fantastically meaty organ if you excuse the pun.

  • what a fantasticly talented woman... awesome upload thanks!

  • crazy woman, in positive sense!!!!!

  • What an awesome device this organ is...a work of art! Fantastic version of one of my favorite classical pieces!

  • well! this woman, this lady if I may say so. not only talented, with years of experiance bejind her. has other talents. like a good spokes person. and refined up bringing. she takes my breath away.

  • @centurian55428 many, many years... lol

    she is great!

  • @Mrgunman1955 lol

  • to dobrze ze cie ciary przechodza to znaczy ze czujesz muzyke bacha zwlaszcza ta grana na organach przez Diane bish.

  • wyglada jak nawiedzona ale gra zajebiscie:o az mnie ciary przechodza.

  • spooky..........

  • Wow! This is great!!! I've heard different interpretations of this piece. I wish I could get the sheet music to it. I play the organ, and it's not as easy as it looks. Alot of pedals and keys!!! I really like this version, it's a good one. There are more too.

  • I will agree. this machine, this monster, wow! it would take decades 4 any one to master.

  • when i hear this its about life and death and the experience of living specially in that age life flows troughout those organ pipes as if the player is leeched of its soul this piece is better than all music together in 2010 years its untouchable what a magnificent genious

  • oh my fucking hell my bones are vibrating too this master piece this broad is rocking correctors can fuck off and try too do a better job cause you cant because this chick is chosen your a minor this is past divinity or hell a worrld master piece beyond centuries

  • Diane Bish is truly wonderful beyond measure and description!

  • CRAZY OLD LADY PRETTY DOWN THOUGH

  • Talented! Beautiful!

  • I want to be as cool as this lady when I get old!!

  • @kellann55 she I guess she was cool for the most time of her life not just suddenly at this age.

  • @MartinLoronzo lol! Touche! but I'm already cool now...just want to MAINTAIN coolness! I'm not as cool as this lady though! lol

  • This is a fantastic interpretation of this peice! It must be so hard to play in a venue with so much reverb!

  • Your GAY!!!!

  • iKloveKtoast;.....You bet your happy ass!

  • When you think about it, it's the reverb that makes this piece known to people. When they hear it they think of a humongous pipe organ with all that sound.

  • michael murray's is the best i have heard it is on the TELARC cd michael murray; bach los angeles

  • So many emotions all in one beautiful song! Thank you J.S. Bach!

  • Excellently done.

  • What interpretation? The piece was written for organ.

  • I suppose you are thinking that I was talking about a "transcription"? Well, no, of course it was written for organ and this IS an interpretation, and a sad one :P

(interpretation= for example, personalizing a piece)

  • the sad emotions in this peice bring it to life. its dark!! hence the minor!! pure brilliance.

  • true... But why was this an answer to my comment?

  • And with sad, I mean it ruins the piece. In a very sad way...

  • because the sad emotion she puts into the peice helps people to realise what its all about lol. she puts forward the perfect sad tone for this peice :).

  • Hmmmmm... It's just that she sort of "staccatoes" som parts... like in the beginning. I think it's supposed to be more like "dahdahdah" than "dah... dah dah...", you know? And the thing right after it(0:28) is way too fast gone. And after that, it's pretty bad. The rest (including the almost uninterpretationable fugue) is ok, except the part that is like 0:28 of course, blah.

  • Organ = God

  • You're totally right!

One has to love that piece...

  • Oh to be in that church and hear this piece, on that organ in all its glory (and to see that organ). Must be simply amazing. Too bad Diane's video quality wasn't the best. I love her show.

  • The best starts at 1:22

  • that is my favorite part of the piece as well.

  • All I can say is WOW! I love this piece and I love to hear it played well. Great job!

  • Nice

  • That organs size is pretty suitable...

  • For the best rendition of this piece check out Karl Richter...

  • Bravo!! The echo must be deafening. Wonderful sound.

  • I clicked paus after just hearing the first two notes. Now i will watch another video!

  • The opening notes put me off...

  • Love the candles...

  • That was awesome!

  • THIS IS WONDERFUL

  • I live in Haarlem, I often heard many concerts on this organ. I like it!

  • I'm just not getting the sensation that everyone's describing. It makes me feel culturally deprived, and therein, a bit sad. Nonetheless it's still a beautiful piece.

  • Very clean, yet a bit slow. But enjoyable!

  • Go grannyyyyyy!!! Yeahhh! =) very good

  • she ought to have a hunchback

  • Just once, I wish she would turn around wearing a skeleton mask.

  • This song used to scare me when I was younger. A very powerful piece of music.

  • It's haunting, no doubt about it. Its sheer power is unique. When people say they've listened to this dozens of times and still get chills, then that has to say something about its impact. I was in my early teens probably when I first heard it and it definitely made an impression.

  • u go granny!

  • Thank you Diane,i enjoyed it very much. This piece by Bach scared me out of my wit when i was a kid,so very beautiful yet frightful..

  • Magic magic magic...

  • Wow!

  • This organ was actually played by Mozart when he was 10. And in the story Moby Dick, the author writes:

"Seeing all these colonnades of bone so methodically ranged about, would you not think you were inside of the great Haarlem organ, and gazing upon its thousand pipes?"

    What a piece of history!

  • That is a phenomenal organ!

  • it seemed she was a bit too slow in the first 10 seconds

  • i love this woman and her whole "joy of music" series.

  • It just doesn't sound the same playing the first three notes as quarters rather than sixteenths. Other than that very minor quibble, this was magnificent.

  • Agreed on the quarters.

  • i would to be in that church just to feel the power of the organ

  • that organ is one awsome piece of work

  • whoah................

  • Uh, yeah, what he said.

Ama good dediğin gibi:D Good is good :D Pardon, nice, nice is good :D

  • ya teyzeyi geç de,şöyle bi mekanım olsa ne güzel olurdu :D

  • Senin kale-şato(?) mekanın bundan kat kat iyidir gibime geliyor :D

  • I`ve never heard her playing organ music that does not belong to the romantic era... Well, I expected more from her, as far as articulation is concerned. But the stops are combinated very nice.

  • Can this chick jam!!

  • wonderful - full of feeling, thank you !

  • I have followed her carrier. and this lady deserves recognition. not only out standing performance, skill. but great personalitty. beautifull woman. Diane Bish. from the bottom of my heart I salute you.

  • This just beyond belife. I mean enough that the organ she is playing on is bigger than my house, but the peice is just so monserous to play by ones self. She is literally using her whole body to play. I feel over matched on my tuba.

  • A massive Monster piece played on a Massive monster Instrument

  • wow I think that is the best one

that i can find on youtube !!!

respect for this old woman !!!!

he really plays this melodie with enthusiasm

and dont play only with the notes like the other people that I heared!

    really tasteful !!!

    love it !

  • This particular organ is well-matched to a cathedral sized for about 5,000 persons; Bish registered this instrument to take advantage of the sanctuary's size here, much as did E. Power Biggs on the D. A. Flentrop at Busch Hall, Harvard University, when recording BWV 565 for Columbia Masterworks.

  • This is one of the best performance of this piece I heard so far!

    And on this organ... Wow!

  • This has GOT to be bone chilling in person.

  • És impresionant . Per a mí un dels millors treballs de'n Bach .

  • Comment removed

  • That first diminished chord is intense as hell.

  • Unusual opening phrasing, but a good way of dealing with the amazing reverb of the building.

    This lady is IN CONTROL.

    Astonishing talent and simpatico...

  • Very good!!!!! nice style and the look of the console and the pipes give the song a even more greater sound!!!!!

  • Toccata & Fugue: the first Metal song in history!! XD

  • I WOULD LOVE TO BE IN THAT CHURCH OMG

  • you are welcome.

  • :O really??? to play the organ ???????????

  • I guess it wouldn't be a problem... But are you really prepared to go to europe for an organ?
