...I don't want to be rude, but this is like MacGyver shit. I have only one screwdriver in my house, no way I can fix that. I remove the Power Button cover and the keyboard by the time I realized in what I am getting into. And I needed "only" 30 minutes to put back the Power Button wires, to do everything from A to Z I would need around 10 hours, etc... Is a really good upload, 398.000 hits and counting. HP are in a big shit with their products. I will switch to Apple and forget about the rest.

i want to ask a question on these laptops which having black screen problem can we use alternate usb graphics card did u ever checked it kindly check it and tell us is that working or not cause i have done reflow of laptops several times but my laptop works only for one week then again goes to black screen
I actualy tryed to clean it up by opening and after closing just fine all the wires and all the screws, i twice checked them! and then the laptop just opened fine, than i Updated BIOS ,after that Shutted Down and Powerd UP with black screen, HDD light is not beeping , i tryed to ReInstall BIOS with USB1GB and FLOPPY with Phoenix Crisis Recovery APP! Still BlackScreen! Is my problem BIOS or is my problem the VGA and it needs a fix like u show it!???????
My dv6000 does not stay on it just cuts on for like 2 seconds then shuts down.
Just enough so the fan turns a notch.
Not sure whats the problem. I know its not the screen problem i see it blink on when i push the power button. I does not make a beep or any other sound.
Any suggestions on what it might be and solutions?

What is the purpose of heating up the Video Chip with a little torch? Also why did you use aluminum and then copper to put it on Video Chip? Thank you...
@Knockturnall1 there are metal connections the chipset and when the hp overheated, they melted thus no connection between the video card and motherboard so u have to reheat it so that those connectors liquify and reconnect when it solidifies during cool down
this is just a bit complicated for a 13 year old to understang...btw do u have a video to fix the speakers on this laptop ( HP Sucks but their cheap so my family buys them D:) My dad will open it up and all I will just be watchin and use it when hes done fixing from ur video :)
@elvanorduna Thats not always true. 5V to turn the inverter on is under the chip, we get them in all the time that get external monitor fine and dark screen lcd. After the reflow the issue is resolved. We have a couple in house tricks to sort that out.
Hello Pete you posted this about 4 months ago and I had a question about it.
I have an hp pavillion tx 2000 and have the same problem the external connection works fine but the monitor only works some of the time
Do I have to take the whole computer apart like you show in this video just to clean dust out of the heatsync and fan? How about to glue the copper sheeting on the graphics card (I need to order some from you)? Thank you again for your help. We have been fighting foreclosure for 3 years and would have lost the use of our laptops (and income) if not for you. God Bless.
A little sidenote: remember to have your RAM plugged in when you test if the notebook works. If you don't have your RAM in, you may hear 4 short beeps and won't see any video. For the test run, all you need to connect is the display cable, the two power cables and the left flat cable which connects the motherboard to the panel which has the power button.
Then I turned the heat up again so it would be capable of melting the solder/tin and kept blowing the chipset for another minute or two, from a distance of one inch or so, then let it cool naturally. In fact I ended up heating the thing too much, so I had three little bubbles formed on the surface of the chipset pcb (not the chipset die) and I also melt the cooler connector. But after all I got the video to work again! :D
Another success case! I bought a 1300w hot air gun (advertised as 1600w), and using the low power mode (5A * 127V = 600w) I regulated the air flow so it would be enough to melt a little solder/tin I used to test the temperatures. (I also put another piece of tin wire over the chipset to monitor its surface temperature.) Then I got the temperature a little lower (a bit higher air flow) and heated the chipset for a minute or two, so it all would be pre-heated.
hello i completed the re-flow process and it worked however now it boots just long enough for the bios screen to come up then shuts down. if you have any pointers on what i might need to do now i would greatly appreciate it. thanks for the great diy videos
@underUrpillow D620 we fixed many of those at the shop... Same sort of procedure I will try to make a video on that laptop. If you need help with it you can send it our way...
my parents got royally screwed by dishonest and incompetent repairmen who never figured out what the problem was-this video was a huge help for me to fix it for them.
When you pull the Heatsinks out of the computer there's a blue pad on the GPU heatsinks. When you put the computer back together do you leave the blue pad on the GPU Heatsinks or just put the copper shim on it with the thermal paste?
What do you think it is if there is a single black line that runs through the center of the screen? It looks like it is not the actually screen that is damaged.
@RubberWilbur Think we've got the same problem. My screen boots in white screen, then fades to a blackbar with blue-ish background. It managed to boot properly on or two times (out a hundred) where I tried to run a repair program, but it resolved nothing. I suspect the problem is mainly software.
If you were to get the board a little too hot and burn the cpu fan connection is it possible to heat up the holes and pull out the burnt pleces and replace it with a know good jack from another board?
Ive looked all over and cant find a similar black screen issue in which im having. the laptop turns on shows the HP screen then goes to a black screen with a blank on the top left of the screen which looks like i would be able to type something. this blank flashes a few times then the screen goes black. Anyone know whats going on here? it is a dv6000. Thank you
@Craqerzrus sounds like a bad LCD.. Try the external VGA and if its normal then its the LCD screen.. If its also blank on that side its the video chip.
This is a very helpful video. Never would I have thought to attempt something like this. I got all the tools for about $26 and watch the video a few times, gave it a shot and my dv6000 is working again. Really appreciate you sharing this.
@mechiedak1 Sure we fix a lot of those at the shop.. IF you need help your welcome to send it our way for the flat rate repair. Our phone number is 321-332-0710
@ROBECABAL, @NIKE10622, One major issue I can see with aluminum is that it will react with any copper (and some other metals) and oxidize. This is seen often in the electrical trade where old aluminum wired houses being joined with new copper wiring, in this case a special grease is used to stop this process (Eg. Ideal's Noalox anti-oxidant), however this seems very impractical in this case -- just get some copper.
I did as you did in the Video, but i faced a little problem, the problem is, i cant seem to remove my keyboard, i removed all the screws, 3 under the battery and 1 under the ram/memory, Can anyone help me somehow?
nike 10622, aluminum and cooper are very sensitive to heat, you can use either one, the reason they use cooper is cause it has to be thin sheet ,there is no much space there to add it, and its easier to get cooper sheets that thin. aluminum foil is to thin.
@MrRazorgod Thats a GPU issue. We would clean the GPU glue and reflow with the dark IR if it dont come back I would do a chip swap with a new GPU. Your welcome to send it in if you need some help with it.
Dude, I just watched this video and a few others you made and I have to say thanks you. I run my own Sales, Service & Repair business and you are an amazing resource, so quick too , brilliant. I am not religious either but really like your philosophy, great outlook my friend, thanks again.
@pete8811 Thanks for the kind words.. We will have a lot more repair videos in the coming months so stay tuned. Dont worry im not religious too. ;o)~ I stay away from religious systems and do my own studies.
I read through a lot of the comments. I'm trying to figure out a solid way of knowing when I've heated the chip enough though. I'm trying to figure out what unchainedbass is saying and if I can apply something like that. Unfortunately the temp gun I have doesn't read high enough for this app.
Also, I read someone ask about using aluminum instead of copper... someone else said nothing is better than putting aluminum in there. Why? I don't have any copper sheets available to me. Brass? Thanks!
@yeshu26uk reball but not all chips need to be reballed, when people heat up the chip to the point that solder runs into each other causing a short you have to reball.
i have hp pavillion dv6000 with the same problem, my question is how long will it take u to fix it and send it back? in other words in how long will i have it back with me working? and after the fix does it last for a while or it will just work for a few moths? i will like to send it
Good video! I've repaired about 4 machine using ALMOST this same method. Only difference is that I wrap the motherboard in foil, razor out a square above the video chip, the square that comes out I put a little silicone based thermal grease on it and stick it to the chip so the foil will not blow away. Then I stick about 3mm of solder wire on top, hit it with a heat gun until that solder melts (which tells me when it's properly hot) let it cool off for about 10 min then all back together!
thanks pete i heated up the video chip like the gpu on the 6700 with foil and a heat torch .Made up shims from copper sheet and fantastic it worked thank you very much great video too thank you
Hey sorry to bother again. but i have ordered the copper bought the arctic silver thermal compound. and i thought about my laptop turning on and off. i was wondering if that is the same problem with the video chip or is that something else.
pete ive got a dv6700 screen comes up white screen . then a few seconds later fine coloured lines going down the screen changed over the ram no sucess also tryed to run an external monitor through the vga plug wont work any idea,s is this the same gpu problem it has a nvidia video chip installed on the board or do i just buy another board for it any thoughts mate
@wadosun Sounds like the video chip is shot. We have a lot of luck with our reflow if you want us to look at it for you. We also do chip swaps of the video chip if you need help with it.
I have a hp pavilion dv6000 and some times when im using it for more than an hour it freezes and the screen shows like this static thing with a hole bunch of different colors and nothing will work i have to unplug it and take the battery out for it to turn off. if someone knows what the problem is or knows how to fix it can you help pleas?
i was thinking of using the same thing. yet thats the same problem im having i dont know when to stop, and i was thinking of buying a pencil torch thing, and but then i dont know when to stop and im afraid ill burn part of the motherboard with the flame
Hey, thanks so much for this video you got my hopes up. i have a dv6000 i dont know if you know off the top of your head what kind of motherboard it has, but um i wanted to do the job myself, and i had a few questions about the paste and the copper shim and taking some of it apart, if i could have your email that would be fantastic. thanks a lot
@davide8192 Well the cooler the laptop runs the longer it will be problem free, so be sure to keep it running cool and dont restrict the fan on the bottom.
If you have any questions your welcome to call the office 321-332-0710
sir pete how 'bout dv6000 with blank screen and on and off power when initializing...the dvd drive seems uncomftable moving irregularly...i dont have enough money right now to buy a pen burner(the one you use to make the nvidea chipset intact). can I use some alternative tools??
I tried doing this method on my laptop (after getting it back from an computer clerk who tried to fix it and probably killed the power). The power no longer comes on at all as if nothing is being supplied to the motherboard. Do i need to replace the board completely? or is there anything else i can do, or connect etc... thanks
I have used the reflow method on my playstation ylod and some friends of mine, and it worked fine. so i am very familiar with the procedure.
Pete, what is the long-term success rate of this fix? I've had my DV6040us' motherboard replaced at least 3 times already, and it's doing the black screen with 3 beeps AGAIN. I'd love to try your fix, but if it's going to just do it again in 6 months, why bother? Where do you get the copper shim from, and what are you accomplishing with the torch?
@camelroe16 I will do my best to do that.. IF you need help with it you can send it our way and we can fix it under the $125 flat rate, that includes shipping back in the us.
I don't wanna desapoint you guys, but in few weeks the problem will return. This solution in the video is only a temporary solution to certify wich is the exactly problem, because the problem is not the card or chipset, but what lies between them, the solder, which heats up and detaches, to solve would have to replace the one with lead solder that has more resistance to heat.
@Jonilages We have reflows that has last 1.5 years so far.. Its a combo of copper, new bios flash, fan mod and good computing habits. If you keep it running cool it wont fail, but I agree; I love leaded solder.
что за долбоебизм?!!! этот хпшник не больше недели проработает.
чип нужно снимать и реболить.

To ALL;
It WORKS, IF properly done.
As stated in fine print, a BGA Rework Machine is the best method.
Forget the heatgun, propane torch, and flame thrower.

musicman6130,
1) It's THERMAL PASTE
2) You can buy the copper shim material from a hobby store, for one.
3) I think you better stick to music, and leave this sh!t alone. I think it is beyond your intellectual capacity.

What is the purpose of heating up the Video Chip with a little torch? Also why did you use aluminum and then copper to put it on Video Chip? Thank you...
Great educational video by the way...
Way to go....
Knockturnall1 2 months ago
@Knockturnall1 there are metal connections the chipset and when the hp overheated, they melted thus no connection between the video card and motherboard so u have to reheat it so that those connectors liquify and reconnect when it solidifies during cool down

I have already tried to switch the inverter and nothing I know it isnt a backlight problem so all I am left with is the chipset Any thoughts?
livewire1199 3 months ago

God Bless.

@lrhmiller You can use an air compressor and blow out the dust.. That helps too.. compressed air works too..

A little sidenote: remember to have your RAM plugged in when you test if the notebook works. If you don't have your RAM in, you may hear 4 short beeps and won't see any video. For the test run, all you need to connect is the display cable, the two power cables and the left flat cable which connects the motherboard to the panel which has the power button.
umloginqualquer 3 months ago
Then I turned the heat up again so it would be capable of melting the solder/tin and kept blowing the chipset for another minute or two, from a distance of one inch or so, then let it cool naturally. In fact I ended up heating the thing too much, so I had three little bubbles formed on the surface of the chipset pcb (not the chipset die) and I also melt the cooler connector. But after all I got the video to work again! :D
umloginqualquer 3 months ago
Another success case! I bought a 1300w hot air gun (advertised as 1600w), and using the low power mode (5A * 127V = 600w) I regulated the air flow so it would be enough to melt a little solder/tin I used to test the temperatures. (I also put another piece of tin wire over the chipset to monitor its surface temperature.) Then I got the temperature a little lower (a bit higher air flow) and heated the chipset for a minute or two, so it all would be pre-heated.
umloginqualquer 3 months ago
@umloginqualquer great work.. The dark IR stations are a lot better to use as you dont cook the chip badly.

-Pete

I want to know for how long i keep the torch around the chipset, about 1min, 5min....can you help me with this issue ? thanks !!
thlmadi 3 months ago
@thlmadi You have to hit the 220C flow point so be sure you have a thermal scanner on hand if you use a torch.. Otherwise you might kill that chip!

Ideal's Noalox anti-oxidant), however this seems very impractical in this case -- just get some copper.

nike 10622, aluminum and cooper are very sensitive to heat, you can use either one, the reason they use cooper is cause it has to be thin sheet ,there is no much space there to add it, and its easier to get cooper sheets that thin. aluminum foil is to thin.

Brass? Thanks!
nike10622 6 months ago
@nike10622 Copper is the only sure bet.. Aluminum you might as well not put anything it will raise your temp.. Good thermal paste helps too.

yeshu26uk 6 months ago
@yeshu26uk reballing

@yeshu26uk reball but not all chips need to be reballed, when people heat up the chip to the point that solder runs into each other causing a short you have to reball.
I hope that helps.
