hey bill if you still have the instructions do you think you can make a PDF file and send it to me please? i have this set too but not the instructions.
those areent pullies their syncrodes and the "dog teeth" which is what they call it in a real transmission catch to the inside of those gears when you shift.
@chris21198 When I got mine it seemed that this model was more available from EBAY in Europe than EBAY in the USA. My guess is that they sold more in Europe, So your best bet is to scour the EBAY listings - from Germany and France and Spaih and Italy. Good luck. BTW this is a really awsome model...
@crookie28 I tried to figure it out and the only way was to power it up. Then it clicked. It is really complicated. At least the video does clarify that it is a actual working transmission. Those Lego people are amazing...
Wow, that stick shift could have saved me days worth of time. I had to build that from scratch with standard technic pieces (bulky) when I built my first 5 speed Lego tranny. Mind you I was 12 years old and had the time then (17+years ago). But this dilema forced me to come up with several of my own cvt (continuously variable transmission) designs. Bill, take a look at my video. You should be able to recreate my design and have fun too. Thanks a lot for the great video!
LOL so there ARE lego shift collar pieces! no wonder they can make those kits so compact. All these I've been trying to build transmissions of similar size with straight cut gears and sliding countershafts! That shift panel looks really handy as well, can you buy these specific pieces seperate from lego or would i have to go buy a bunch of kits?
just call the lego company and say you lost the pieces, they'll send you an envelope with em .... you just need to be able to describe the peice really well.
It was a SUPER MODEL and sold originally for over $100 USD... Now it is hard to find for that price as it is a RARE set... I have seen it sold for $75 with missing pieces... Bill
About the only place you are going to find this one is EBAY or BRICKLINK... It is more available on EBAY EUROPE... In the USA it is very hard to find for some reason. If you really want it then do a daily WORLDWIDE search for it on EBAY and it will pop up eventually. It seems to be readily available in GERMANY... Bill
HA HA!!! Not yet. But I will and soon. I intend on building the NEW TECHNIC OFF ROADER. I will finish this 8880 in celebration of that build soon thereafter to show you the contrast. I have been putting off finishing this car so as to do it in coordination with the OFF ROADER. I will do a special video showing BOTH VEHHICLES together and compare the OLD DESIGN with the NEW... All I can say is STAY TUNED... Bill
I have a 8448 Ferrari set which has 5 speeds plus reverse, instead of only 4 speeds. I've been wanting the 8880 for some time now because of the transmission parts and the higly specialized wheels which allow for 4WD.
I ended up getting the 8480 and it was way more than $20.99. Most of these Space Shuttles sell between $90-$190 USD on EBAY. They are more easy to find in EUROPE than the USA... Bill
you know all the action on the 8480 in ended on a prize on 190 - 150 $ so i will end up to get that model i will buy some lego mindstorms thing or vision command ^^
I just checked on EBAY and they have a BUYIT NOW for $189!!! SO I got a deal... BTW - I have TWO other video on this car - see - "Bills' Creations - Lego Technic 8880 Super Model PREVIEW" - "Bills' Creations - Lego Technic 8880 Chassis" - "Bills' Creations - Lego Technic 8880 Transmission" (this video)... Bill
After seeing this I'm interested to see how the super car Mk II (8448) would work with it's 6 speed gearbox! The only downside is that they didn't make it 4 wheel drive and it only has 2 wheel steering.
They certainly had a knack for making good kits back in the day.

The KING KONG kit (Technic DINO) 3 in 1 really has a great number of technic gears a remote control and 2 motors! Same with the HUGE BULLDOZER. Too many!!! Have fun in Spin! Bill
Thanks for the fine comments! This is a great set and I hope to work on it today. This is probably one of the TOP kits ever made by LEGO! Be Well... Bill

the reason why it can't go 3 and 4 gear is because one of the gears is hitting a lego plate.
