When I am watching these Group B rally racing movies, I am always thinking what if one of the drivers loses control?
How stupid where the fans, standing so close to the road. How hard is it to imagine, that a car with that amount of power and that weight is hard to control?
that's audio from after the crash of Henri Toivonen. Either race marshals telling the start line to halt the rally or Martini team members explaining the crash.
Today's WRC rally cars are actually much faster than Group B cars. Group B was balls out power on the straights but through corners they were very hard work to drive fast. Today's cars are fast on straights and through corners. The key factor when comparing Group B to rallying today is safety. Today's cars and are a hell of a lot safer, so too are the stages. Group B cars were in effect ticking time bombs and the uncontrolled crowds made it only a matter of time until Group B was outlawed.
1:05; 1:10; 1:15; Fafe jump, Rally of Portugal. Stupid jerks! I still can't believe why they say that the Portuguese Rally was considered the best in the World. I'm Portuguese and I say it wasn't. The best rallies for me are: Network Q RAC, Finland, Greece, New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, and Cyprus.
@cambiechan The Group B cars ended for many reasons. Public safety, which was a big problem in Portugal, crashes, speed of the cars, the death of Henri Toivonen in Corsica 1986, etc. Due to all these things, Group B came to a premature end. The pilot at 1:52 is Joaquim Santos.
@cambiechan Those cars were incredibly fast. Even Walter Röhrl, German pilot of that era, said once that the speed of those rally cars were so fast that they (pilots) did not have time to think, or to make the correct move.
@cambiechan However, the major problem on Group B was the spectators. They were insane at that time. Plus, they were very disrespectful to the drivers and co-drivers. Due to the unconsciousness of the public, the Group B rallying was over. And that sucks ass. They just didn't know how to watch the cars safetly. So, they were always in the middle road to see the cars coming by. And they only moved away at the very last moment. And that is kind of scary, if you see it right here.
It seems that thoughts are too slow for that car - Walter Rohrl.
Even on the Master, it was too much.
Group B cars were ferociously battling each other, a disaster was waiting on every corner. There were no limits for the power of these monsters, no limits.
Respect, all respect for the drivers of that era, all of them!
If they would bring this back they should do something about the fans. Althought I don't see it coming back soon I would love to see these beasts in action!
I'd heard that some fatal crashes led to the cancellation of this division of the WRC, but I didn't realize it was that intense. Someone oughta make a documentary about this. For all of those blaming it on the fans, I might not know much about the rally culture, but I it's clear to me that they shouldn't be torn down. They died, after all. Think about that for a second. Their families won't ever see them again and the WRC had to put up with a lot. Of course it was going to cancelled after that.
@MrMrsean2011 It had nothing to do with spectators. It was because the fatal accidents and then FIA noticed that those cars were too dangerous and powerful for rally..

Why stop a race just because some people were killed? You'd have to be a cold sob to race through crowds like that, death is inevitable, it's gonna happen in the name of racing, so why act suprised? I can drive, but I could not race where the barriers are humans too goddamn stupid to protect themselves. What kind of person drives a car at those speeds in human alleys? What it says is they are willing to kill and maim spectators, that's a character defect. I don't care what kinda heros they are
@505197 ur a retard it wasnt the drivers choice if you actually looked in to things before opening your narrow minded mouth you would soon find that the crowds are one of the reasons group B got banned not the drivers. It was the crowds that decided and insisted on standing at the side of the roads the drivers didnt want them that close.
@thedeeptone1986 What you fail to realize is the drivers DID scream through crowds, knowing full well a slight mis-step could and would kill and maime. the drivers are hugely talented but its the same with the f1 drivers of today, would you not rather see a driver working in the cockpit with constant opposite lock, stick shifter, etc. or just go so fast round corners they can do nothing more than grip the steering wheel and then have to have all the controls on...
@QuertrGTRR i agree with you.i think todays drivers would be skilled enuff to go fast with a group B car...but do they have the balls for it? they are a bit young.except toivonen all of the great group b drivers were in their mid to end 30s with tons of experience from rallyes with a distance of 5000+ km.... and they were driving in conditions that todays drivers will never ever experience...
so today's drivers: skilled enuff? - YES
Enough balls? NO, but it's not their fault, it's FIA's imo
I have no doubt whatsoever that the incident with the audience in Portugal was the major blow to group B cars.
Yes, the cars were very fast, but so are today's cars. There were fatal accidents, but aren't there fatal accidents even today?
The bottom line is that Rally organization was near nonexistant; Rally fans were insane (especially in Portugal), they hindered the pilot's visibility and made driving nearly impossible.
Many things were wrong, but it was ther cars that were blamed :(
@OBcIO911 He like many others were there to effectively disrupt the event or to behave like bull fighters trying to impress their pals. Some were hell bent on trying to hold out for as long as possible in attempt to get the best shots (1:21 evidently had no camera).
I wonder how it would have been if Group B was continued with improved crowd control and a 500hp limit on cars- I mean, 500 is still ridiculously fast
@Rexart35 Actually it's not a question how safety the group B was in mid 80s, rather how unsafe rallies were at the time. The worst was Corsica Rally 'coz its lenghtness, it took just an half day of Corsica and it was equal as the 1000 Lakes Rally overall concerning the lenghtness of stages. Attilio Bettega on Lancia 037 in '85, the next year Henri and Sergio. Of course there's always the safety issue of a car too.
@simic9500 and I want you to stand for whole special stage 2 inches from edge of the road on some... lets say... five plus... come on, do it, I'll watch that on youtube afterwards titled as funny movies
Looking at this footage i'm surprised that the drivers still see a road with so much people on the road like ants. More surprising is that the drivers had the guts to even do this kind of thing under these circumstances.
If they had made a tiny driving error then things would go bad. The guys that drove these cars are really something else to be handling these beasts with such precision, under such pressure due to circumstances.
great video - I grew up watching Group B rallying - without doubt the most exciting era of rallying and for me, generally in motorsport. The immense skill the drivers had to have to tame these beasts, I bow down to them! I still miss it and still get excited watching it now.
I blame the FIA or whoever it was then, they should have sorted the crowd control better, maybe it would have lasted longer. Racing drivers will die always, thats just how it is, thats the risk.
I was -86 in Jyväskylä, it was last year when to see b-group cars, i was lost in some fucking forest, and drunk like monkey, but it was very nice experience saw all the best cars, peugeot, audi and lancia, and best drivers too. When night became dark in this time, youll see only fire of exhaust and listen fucking nice sounds of motors :) Skool For Those Drivers !
When you're driving your own car, or bike, whatever you may have, you may find yourself flat out in a corner knowing it feels wrong and trying like hell to save it. These people lived and breathed that feeling. I feel that there will never be another division of motorsport that makes people with the same dreams see their pilots as heroes. It was all wrong and dangerous, but what is racing... and why do people do it?
That was the ending of the greatist time in rally history.
I'm only 16 and I never saw a groub-B rally car in my live, but god damn I love them!
It was probebly the best dissicion in that time to just stop the whole group-B circus. Because the people in that period were just crazy, I mean what were they thinking? Who was so stupid to run in front of cars that were driven by people who just saw a road instead of al the people around? It was ment to go wrong! I hope this never happens again.
Group B ended because of the poor safety organisation that time and the idiotism of the spectators ... But they had to blame the cars ... We see how it goes, then it went Group A, then WRC, next year they will drive the great 1.6L race cars ...
Maybe in 2020 we will have Rally with bicycles ... for safety's sake ...
its the spectators who caused all the tighter regulations.the cars were very powerful with out the control of modern cars.stick that power in a modern car and the brakes and suspension could take it.thats why modern wrc are so quick because of the brakes ,tyres and suspension set ups
@markandrach It ain't like it was the fucking dark ages Mark, they had all the controls they needed to haul ass, and the computer was between their ears, traction control was your feet, men drive and didn't ride along on a wave of electrons paddleshiftin through the gears. Make it too easy and it's no fun, gimme lots of hp and not a lot of traction. Low limit cars are actually more fun to drive, because you HAVE to drive them, not just ride along in a glued down winged thing. Sprint Cars!!!!
far too much hot sauce. if you want a proper burrito, you can't go dumping hot sauce all over the beans and rice. this is even more true in the case of chicken and cheese. that's why they put an end to burritos of this type
@acroracing maybe it was one of the Martini (Lancia) team speaking... he said (communicating with someone of the team located at the special race base, i believe) : "send immediately the fireman team, Henri's car is burning... "
F1 drivers have skills, no doubt... but Group B drivers, they are like Gods , to control such power in so extremely dangerous conditions, at speeds of +110mph in roads with so lite space... Long life to Group B drivers...
@filipzanetic how is WRC a bit weak, since they compete better than Group B? With times like 0-200 in 9 secs they are pretty top on the list.
Do not forget that Group B were beasts, though much harder to drive than the hi-tech WRC today. Like that WRC achieves same or more, with less power ...
Of course I miss Group B, because it was pure beast power, but I am far away from calling WRC "weak" ...
And of course I am not happy about the 2011 regulations with the S2000 or 1600 turbo specs ...
@filipzanetic WRC have less horsepower, true that, though as a complete car, they achieve even better times than Group B. And that is , what counts ...
As I said, Gr.B. were much harder to drive than WRC ... of course, WRC is 15 years later, it is normal that they are more advanced as technology ...
The HP of the engine is important, though there is much more that a racing car needs ...
WRC engines might have only about 300-350 hp, though 550nm torque, and the weight is kept about same as GrB
@filipzanetic Hehe my friend, I do not disagree about the sound, or about the incredible Group B. I was there, I remember a lot. I was in 2nd grade in 85, my father was to many of the rallies (big fan, refereee also in lower coefficient rallies). I know very well how Gr. B sound and are. And yes, they are amazing.
I just wanted to correct your statement, which many people think btw, that Gr B are like owning WRC ... GrB > WRC only on fast stages, like they used in the 80ies.
@filipzanetic not in several years. from next year already ... from 2011 there will be a choice either S2000 or 1600 turbo ... I guess all works teams will go for 1600 turbo version ...
invece di chiudere la categoria avrebbero dovuto mettere due scarpe nel c**o a quei fan idioti ke stanno in mezzo alla pista o nelle immediate vicinanze..mah..totalmente pazzi...

Best motorracing eras ever:
5. Sportscar endurance racing 1970-1971. Porsche 917, say no more.
4. Grand Prix racing in 1936-1939(600hp supercharged monsters going 320kph)
3. The 1982-1988 turbo era in Formula 1.
2. Can-Am racing 1967-1973 (monster racecars with no displacement limit)
1. Group B rally. Insane amounts of power on narrow roads. The drivers were gods.

Good choices. But my best eras :
5. Formula One in the fifties 54-58 ( With the Gladiator FANGIO, Amazing GP of Reims with the 250 F )
4. WSC in the Eighties 84-90 ( Love the 956, 962, famous "SILK CUT" and alls others )
3. Fromula One 85-94, just for SENNA....
2. Group A 88-94, amazing amazing amazing battle BMW-MERCEDES !!!
1. Group B but you knew that already of course ;)

@RuiBCJ sadly that's true. what an amazing era, tho

@RuiBCJ but arent there any limits for todays rally cars? i mean you cant really compare a 310 hp wrc car to say 550 hp audi quattro from group b.

@simic9500 group b car may have look great but they were so dangerous and so powerful that Henri Toivonen died
Rexart35 1 year ago
@Rexart35 Actually it's not a question how safety the group B was in mid 80s, rather how unsafe rallies were at the time. The worst was Corsica Rally 'coz its lenghtness, it took just an half day of Corsica and it was equal as the 1000 Lakes Rally overall concerning the lenghtness of stages. Attilio Bettega on Lancia 037 in '85, the next year Henri and Sergio. Of course there's always the safety issue of a car too.

AutoJuniorBelgium 1 year ago
Group B ended because of the poor safety organisation that time and the idiotism of the spectators ... But they had to blame the cars ... We see how it goes, then it went Group A, then WRC, next year they will drive the great 1.6L race cars ...
Maybe in 2020 we will have Rally with bicycles ... for safety's sake ...

its the spectators who caused all the tighter regulations.the cars were very powerful with out the control of modern cars.stick that power in a modern car and the brakes and suspension could take it.thats why modern wrc are so quick because of the brakes ,tyres and suspension set ups
power is nothing without control
markandrach 1 year ago
@markandrach It ain't like it was the fucking dark ages Mark, they had all the controls they needed to haul ass, and the computer was between their ears, traction control was your feet, men drive and didn't ride along on a wave of electrons paddleshiftin through the gears. Make it too easy and it's no fun, gimme lots of hp and not a lot of traction. Low limit cars are actually more fun to drive, because you HAVE to drive them, not just ride along in a glued down winged thing. Sprint Cars!!!!

@NogarderPT Yeah, FIA is killing all the sports! Over the years they have reduced the power of the cars and therefore made the sports boring.
Ruined WRC and Touring cars. And they keep reducing the power of the cars in WRC. :(

@14EMC88 a broup b was a bit to much, but today wrc are bit weak. 400 ower 1000 kg would be just perfect
filipzanetic 1 year ago
@filipzanetic how is WRC a bit weak, since they compete better than Group B? With times like 0-200 in 9 secs they are pretty top on the list.
Do not forget that Group B were beasts, though much harder to drive than the hi-tech WRC today. Like that WRC achieves same or more, with less power ...
Of course I miss Group B, because it was pure beast power, but I am far away from calling WRC "weak" ...
And of course I am not happy about the 2011 regulations with the S2000 or 1600 turbo specs ...
RRT3am 1 year ago
@RRT3am they are weak compere to the group b
filipzanetic 1 year ago
@filipzanetic WRC have less horsepower, true that, though as a complete car, they achieve even better times than Group B. And that is , what counts ...
As I said, Gr.B. were much harder to drive than WRC ... of course, WRC is 15 years later, it is normal that they are more advanced as technology ...
The HP of the engine is important, though there is much more that a racing car needs ...
WRC engines might have only about 300-350 hp, though 550nm torque, and the weight is kept about same as GrB
RRT3am 1 year ago
@RRT3am wrc cars are faster becouse suspension , tires , downforce , transmision but just lisen to the sound group b car are making
filipzanetic 1 year ago
@filipzanetic Hehe my friend, I do not disagree about the sound, or about the incredible Group B. I was there, I remember a lot. I was in 2nd grade in 85, my father was to many of the rallies (big fan, refereee also in lower coefficient rallies). I know very well how Gr. B sound and are. And yes, they are amazing.
I just wanted to correct your statement, which many people think btw, that Gr B are like owning WRC ... GrB > WRC only on fast stages, like they used in the 80ies.
RRT3am 1 year ago
@RRT3am in several years there will be no WRC only stupid s2000 but who knows may be s2000 will be good
filipzanetic 1 year ago
@filipzanetic not in several years. from next year already ... from 2011 there will be a choice either S2000 or 1600 turbo ... I guess all works teams will go for 1600 turbo version ...
In 2025 they will race with bicycles ...
