Okay if you have this song on your iPod, listen to the last 5 seconds and turn your volume really loud. I hear Isaac talking to probably Jeremy, way back from the Issaquah days. I can't really understand what they are saying but I'm pretty sure Isaac asks if something is good, and someone (Jeremy) replies something like: "this one's still good." it's really really quiet.
Isaac tells it how it is and you'll interpret how you want, if you aren't happy with your interpretation then it's you at fault, not Isaac; if you were to describe this band as "emo" then you'd be correct, because they definitely but a lot of passion into their music.
This song makes me sick in all the energy that I am not using to better the earth. THey seem to make their songs knowing that we will be living our lives forever. Its completely insane and I can't really imagine them making another song. This whole time all they have sung about is all that there is in the fear of our minds
This song makes me feel so happy. Getting the hot air balloon on my quarter sleeve tomorow with "I took off runnin' at the greatest speed" under it. Long live king rat.
I love how different modest mouse is! Especially how they still manage to make a sweet song like this and it doesnt have a chorus. its like one awesome long verse. Modest mouse is one of my favorite bands.
I agree totally haha, i was walking through the hallway at my university and someone had wrote the opening lyric to 3rd planet on a pin board. I don't think anybody has a clue
Exactly, one of the reasons I love Modest Mouse so much is the fact I can go around my school singing the lyrics to a great Modest song. (like this one) and MAYBE one person will hear and recognize the song, and if they do that makes them to coolest person at school lol. Opposed to every other overplayed song that I -used to- like.
as a musician, i think 95% of bands people think have "sold out" really haven't. Things that have influenced them start shaping their musicality differently over time. Hardly does any musician say, "Hey lets change our style so more people like us"
@seektheunseenmusic well, i listened to modest mouse back in 2001 when a friend introduced me to them, and then 9-10 years later, i heard them on the radio.
Bands change. just for the record. A band getting older, getting sober, getting wives, changing opinions, theres a lot more to it then just wanting record sales. Selling out is a pointless phrase. If you're on a label you're a sellout. In face most, though not all, musicians prefer their latter work...including Issac Brock, Davey Havoc, And Billy Joe Armstrong
why would they be sell outs? the first album is as good and the last one... its all the best fucking shit there is ... if it would be AFI or Green Day i would highly understand why they would be sell outs, but not modest mouse
Why so serious? I'm looking through all these comments and it's kind of depressing. I love Modest Mouse, you're all arguing about selling out and shit, and it doesn't even matter. This is great music.
If it wasn't for Modest Mouse I would of never known who Bukowski was. Thank you, MM for introducing me to poetry. If I could ever write half as good as Isaac I'd die a happy writer.
I couldn't disagree more. In fact, if the songs on this EP were on the respective CDs they would have been on (either Good News or We Were Dead), I would have liked those albums a little more.
i liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiike it! first time listening to this album very nice. i dont think i will ever stop listening to this group. today i teared up on the bus to school while listening to float on. because i thought to myself how wonderful it would be to just do something and be completely fine with it. sometimes life is okay. and i know float on is one of the most well known mm songs... thats why its crazy for me. ive been listening to them since i was in 8th grade (im a senior now)
Everyone whines about bands "selling out" when they stop liking their music, and it's such a horrible justification. A change does not equal selling out. Bands are a group of people, and people get bored of doing the same thing over and over again. Same goes for musicians. If you don't like the new stuff, that's fine, but it doesn't mean they "sold out."
Race always is the factor with you ignorant assholes isn't it....if SELLING OUT means making money off your music and doing commercials to promote it and get it heard while making money off it then what's bad about selling out...sounds like a great plan to me. Since when did music mean you have to be unsuccessful and not well known to be respectable. It's not that deep guys...it's making music and selling it. find someone else to take too seriously
That is not what selling out means. It means compromising what you'd normally create in order to make more money. If money becomes a deciding influence in your art. You have sold out. It's often unintentional, you get surrounded by industry people, money, and "yes" men, then your reality changes and you make the best music you can and it's shitty.
How do you figure? Because their band makes music for enough people to enjoy and find meaningful? Their music has continued to be original even since going "main stream." Who cares that they make money off great music.
Modest Mouse remains to be my all time favorite band, and Im not one to pick favorites! After all this time they are still amazing! They sound a little different, I dont think its because they "Went mainstream" or otherwise, I think its because they are human, and humans change. simple as that. I would be bored with Modest mouse if they never brought anything new to the table. And as far as past albums go, each of theirs has been unique, so this is really not surprising :/
@Technowhoree I agree. People who complain about a band getting more fans are a little selfsish. Modest Mouse is still pretty widely unknown. Bad music being mainstream is bad. Good music(Modest Mouse) being mainstream would not be bad. Good point on the evolution of Modest Mouse. I would listen either way. Everything from Long drive to the new EP is just awesome. A band that hasnt evolved at all in appearence or music is Green Day. They have been the same for 20 years.
I love you,all these mo fo's talkin about oh im sad there not like they were boo hoo i cant pretend to be emo and listen to moon an antarctica and cry my self to sleep there all bac ass cd's and i think the ppl that dont like the new stuff have issues
i love this band and all the other people that do are real and genuine humans... those who criticize MM for going mainstream are just as narrow minded as their pathetic indie bands that sing about useless material shit. MM needs to get huge to get the msg out there.. music has always voiced opinions and should be available to everyone so they can choose what and who to believe.....keep up the gw fellas.
p.s. love all the other comments here (for the most part! haha)
who gives a fuck if they are mainstream....its still genius! You are just a music snob. Being on the radio effects the quality? Making songs that a lot of people like means they are selling out? I think you need to rethink your values. Modest mouse struggled for a long time, do they not deserve acclaim?
deserve acclaim? that pretty much what i said, its all about success. your dumb, you know nothing about my values, and i love modest mouse. and they're still releasing SOME good songs.
how is that cynical? if they were playing for fun, they'd do it at their houses or garage or whatever. when they're packing venues and performing for people, it's for money. its their job. if you had a job and you could get a raise for changing something, would you? of course. the sold out, but i don't blame them.
It's also their passion. They do it because they love to. One does not pick some random field, especially that of writing and singing songs for the hell of it. To say that THEY only do it for money and they are mainstream because of it, is cynical.
It's like saying that some random company only does something charitable because it gives them a good look. It's cynical and silly.
that analogy is terrible. i never said that they (and i have no idea why you empahized the word they) only do it for money. maybe you've never listened to their earlier albums, i don't know, but you're nonsensical and i'm done.
Sure it's their job, but it's also their passion. If my analogy doesn't make sense then I'll try to clear it up. One company does not do something charitable just because it gives them a good look, but because it's the right thing for them to do. Just like how Modest Mouse playing while charging tickets is more than just making money.
It's also nice to see that you don't deny what you said earlier was cynical.
What the heck is going on here? Who cares if they went main stream? it wasn't till after about 8 albums that they did. They have evolved in music sure, but everyone shouldn't forget that they've had great songs then AND now, throughout all the years that MM has been together, they've always had great music, from beginning to end.
Thank you bro. Its sad that people think they sold out or went "main stream..." when all of the music world has done so at one point or another. But ;you don't see MM putting out hip poppy songs or beats do you? NO. They still hold their originality as only they can, and Isaac still staiy's as obscure as always regardless of being called a sellout. I think Modest Mouse is STILL A WIN!!! YEAH!!!!!
Benjamin Weikel has got to be one of the most distinctive sounding drummers out there... Case in point, on every song he plays with MM he does those snare ghost notes--probably helps that he's using the same drum kit and all but still, yeah..he's awesome.
I own a cocker spaniel, had him since I was in 5th grade (3 1/2 years out of high school now). I love this song, reminds me of him :) (Yes, he's still around).
another awesome MM tune!! thx for the upload schoelzi!
Does anyone have the perpetual motion machine single as the B-side "History sticks to your feet" is an awesome track and it needs to be uploaded and exposed!!!
I totally agree with you, smeaglerG. I agree with you because it doesn't matter if it is classic MM sound because in the words of Rin On The Rox: "Like it, love it, hate it, whatever. Just enjoy it."
i think this sound is awesome reguardless if it sounds like classic MM or not. Thats pretty stupid to judge based on what their older songs are. It comes down to if it sounds good or not.
I love the new songs and the fact that their music is evolving. I was listening to MM in the beginning and will be listening to them to the end. I only said I like Third Planet more than Dashboard. Non-radio friendly means that there is quirkiness and interesting aspects to the song structures that would most likely keep it from getting on the radio, unlike with what you find in a song like Dashboard (which is still a great song).
You are getting negative votes because you sound like one of those stupid indie snobs who relish things that are unpopular. MM is mainstream now, and i could give a shit less. Third planet, in fact MoonOA was their first non-indie album, stupid cockmunch. Of course you have to compare old to new though rather then accepting a band's evolution. Fans like you are a disgrace.
well said yeah not to many people obvisously read any articles on Isaac they would be alittle surprised .Not to many so called fans remmember Third Planet was used in a Saturn commercial that would break their little hearts sorry guys. MM sold out long ago but there still doing the shit they love and i dont know how any of the music is radio friendly its beyond me ,with half the shit they play on the top 40 maybe will see a duet with Lady Gaga
The song was "Gravity Rides Everything" and it was for a Nissan commercial, Isaac said it was for money, and nothing more.. so sue him.. just because something is used on mainstream television does not dicredit the artistic merit
I love the emotions that you hear in every Modest Mouse song. It's like they pour their soul into their songs and it really touches me..know that sounds weird lol but it's kinda hard to explain I guess.
i dont know what it is about Isaac's voice in this song but it feels much more "real" like he is actually talking to you. Like he is actually human i guess. I don't know how to put it into words really. Anyways, great song! Thanks for uploading!
Fuck the NDAA, SOPA, and all that. Can't we all just sit home and listen to Modest Mouse?

But ;you don't see MM putting out hip poppy songs or beats do you? NO. They still hold their originality as only they can, and Isaac still staiy's as obscure as always regardless of being called a sellout. I think Modest Mouse is STILL A WIN!!! YEAH!!!!!

the lyrics are great. i love picturing "guilty cocker spaniels eating table scraps
well we rolled over, how our master clapped
it felt so good, we wanted more of that"

I think this is the better song off this album the lyrics are just way out there but you can still relate

I agree... I love to listen to it for 2:03 on this version turned up really loud.. I just love that riff.. I get it in before I leave my room haha.

Benjamin Weikel has got to be one of the most distinctive sounding drummers out there... Case in point, on every song he plays with MM he does those snare ghost notes--probably helps that he's using the same drum kit and all but still, yeah..he's awesome.

I totally agree with you, smeaglerG. I agree with you because it doesn't matter if it is classic MM sound because in the words of Rin On The Rox: "Like it, love it, hate it, whatever. Just enjoy it."
KateTastrophe2009 2 years ago 5
i think this sound is awesome reguardless if it sounds like classic MM or not. Thats pretty stupid to judge based on what their older songs are. It comes down to if it sounds good or not.

Classic MM sound on this one. Nice and non-radio-friendly. ;)
andrewptob 2 years ago
This doesn't sound like "classic MM" to me at all... maybe the "before I could spit it out" part, but that's it.
How is it non-radio friendly?
*winky face*

Why am I getting negative votes. Sorry if I'm not as big of a fan of Dashboard as I am of Third Planet.
andrewptob 2 years ago 3
You're getting thumbs downs because it seems you don't know
what you're talking about. The few songs that have been
released lately, ( in my opinion ) are for one, filled with
more bliss, a more-so optomistic sounding approach. It's not
called "Classic MM" It's called unique. It's kids like you who
say things to look cool, when really- you're pretty clueless.
And what is ' non radio friendly '? Do you mean they're not on
the radio? Guess again.
SteamEngenious 2 years ago
I love the new songs and the fact that their music is evolving. I was listening to MM in the beginning and will be listening to them to the end. I only said I like Third Planet more than Dashboard. Non-radio friendly means that there is quirkiness and interesting aspects to the song structures that would most likely keep it from getting on the radio, unlike with what you find in a song like Dashboard (which is still a great song).
andrewptob 2 years ago
You are getting negative votes because you sound like one of those stupid indie snobs who relish things that are unpopular. MM is mainstream now, and i could give a shit less. Third planet, in fact MoonOA was their first non-indie album, stupid cockmunch. Of course you have to compare old to new though rather then accepting a band's evolution. Fans like you are a disgrace.

i wouldnt consider MM to be mainstream...they were when Float On released. But not anymore... which is unfortunate
z3lka 2 years ago
well said yeah not to many people obvisously read any articles on Isaac they would be alittle surprised .Not to many so called fans remmember Third Planet was used in a Saturn commercial that would break their little hearts sorry guys. MM sold out long ago but there still doing the shit they love and i dont know how any of the music is radio friendly its beyond me ,with half the shit they play on the top 40 maybe will see a duet with Lady Gaga
hensly77 2 years ago

Thanks for uploading!
pap3rplat3 2 years ago 4
That's because of all the shitty music you hear today that use voice synthesizers so the voices are actually fake, unlike Isaac's voice.
gaphary 2 years ago 6
haha very true. Auto tuning is so stupid in my opinion. As you said it makes the voices fake.
