Wow, if you notice, the deer actually learned to "bow." I've been to Nara before and didn't exactly see that kind of behavior before, but learned later that they learned to bow to receive food, after years and years of passive domestication. (Monks would bow to the deer, since they are considered guardians of the temple grounds, and the deer have learned to bow back. XD)
True, but I call me female dog HER... 彼女. Personification is part of the English language that I sometimes carry over into Japanese. I don't care if it's wrong in this case.
well in that case, you should be referring to the male deer/dog etc... as 彼 He and Her are pronouns, nothing to do with just mentioning the sex of the animal.
Hello Konichiwa ETC. Y ou have helped so much with
my 3 rd new language 1 english 2 Latin 3 japan
i have been wondering could you inform me of any camps groups that go to Japan for summer, i would ask you but you know guy on youtube take me to japan kind of creepy or riskyto Parents you understand . So i was just wanting to go to Japan to learn japanese really well. Ishonru my username is miss spelled ISHON-RYU . last does rosetta stone work very well ill post this on all ur videos respond
I was just in Nara a couple of weeks ago. I got surrounded by 3 deer and one of them put a death grip on my paper shopping bag and ate a giant chunk of it. All my souvenirs spilled on to the ground. It was pretty hilarious. Great vid, love the captioning.
i beat u . i went there in 2007 with my family and i got holy raped by like 20 of them. cause we got some crackers for it to eat. its soo cool and fun
We came back to our bikes after seeing Todai-ji to find my bike on ground with some papers missing. Just a map and a Jehovah's Witness pamphlet I was given but tore up. Then a woman came up to me, explained that she saw deer eating stuff out of my bike and fought the deer to save my stuff! She gave me back the chewed up pamphlet, which she thought were photos, but the map was a gonner. LOL
Went 2 weeks ago with my girlfriend, whipped out some deer crackers in the middle of a park and I swear to God deer a hundred miles away heard that noise. They were EVERYWHERE!
Good things their horns were all sawed off, cuz they like butting you to get food.
Holy crap, thats amazing. I'll have to admit I was kinda hoping you would get a better shot of the guy at the end...i wanted to see if he was cute. All well this was still a freaking awesome video. Thanks for all the translations too!!
Also met those deers, and they were hungry. Was sitting on a bench reading the local map when one of those buggers snap the map from my hands and eat it in front of my shocked eyes while my friends laughed their asses off. :P
A friend of mine bought some of those crackers to feed them. The woman selling them said "Keep walking".
It was amazing how quickly the deer swarmed around my friend. They kept bowing to her but she couldn't feed them fast enough so they started to ram her with their heads.
I would hardly call those deer "wild". When I was in Miyajima by Hiroshima those deer on that Island were all over the place stealing people's back packs and purses in hopes of scoring some munchies.
Hey, is the honorific form of that ancient capital which you visited "O-Nara"?
Well, I had a long talk with the groundskeeper and he says they are wild deer and retreat back to the mountains at night and at different times of the year. They are wild in the same way that that some raccoons will rummage through your garbage or some polar bears will eat your dogs.
I understand what you are saying victor. but they are pretty tame when it comes to having lost the natural fear that wild deer have of human beings. raccoons will scamper away from the garbage cans when humanoid life approaches (generally)
You're right, CR. I was actually thinking to myself "wild"!?!? (GABM!)! when the man said 野生 to me... but they certainly aren't pets... but yeah... for all practical purposes ... they've lost their wild edge. Let's call them stray deer. As in stray cats. Whaddaya say?
So placid deer, when offered food, placidly accept it (have I mentioned that they are implicitly placid creatures?) and this makes them scary? Only small fluffy bunnies are more vicious.
I'm also intrigued by the astonishing longevity of those deer. Hundreds of years? Must be the diet ;o)
Tongue-in-cheek humour really doesn't work in written comments. Sorry if it seemed sarcastic: it really wasn't. Videos like these are always both fun and interesting.

Guess you havent been to Nara.
They have small horns on the top of their heads and they REALLY hurt if they butt you with them.
Also my guess is they are trying to look "kawaii"- cute.
American women rarely try to do that.

I totally got attacked by deer in Nara (and Miyajima...loved Miyajima!) and it was so fun! I love those crazy deer.
I fed them a deer cracker too. Is cracker the right word? I don't know. Seems like a deer cracker.
Thanks for posting. It makes me remember a good day.

I went to Miyajima before going to Nara.
The deer on Miyajima were almost worse.
Saw one bite onto a woman's plastic bag she was carrying and rip it in half, all her stuff fell on the ground. Luckily the deer didnt get anything.
Those deer are aggressive.

What an insulting comment. Their ancestor was the messenger of the God of Kasuga shrine, historically.
