  • DAMN NICE DUDE...I MUST BUY IT

  • I think Hank Hill had this at Strickland Propane since it uses propane lol haha

  • thats 180hp of pure sound for you

  • i would love to see the chopper of that beast!!

  • Mopar! The USA depends on chrysler baby

  • @hotrat62 hahahaha "depends" yeah, because... basically ; the US Govt needs to spend money on Chrysler because foreign cars are cheaper and better, but to keep people in work they pay for air raid sirens, In florida ??? i think it is clear to everybody now, as it was to the rest of the world at the time, that "communists" were never going to launch an invasion from Cuba. Would you not agree ? So in essence the US depends on Chrysler to perpetuate terror amongst its own citizens. Sound familiar

  • @legaliseme shit dude get a life...I just enjoy classic mopars of the 60's and 70's

  • Runs like a champ after all those years! Amazing!

  • sweet sounding V8

  • yay hagrid!

  • LOL my name is robbie!!!!!!!!!!! Can you show a closeup of the rotator drive?

  • lol when i read "Chrysler" air raid siren i half expected it to crap out mid-wail

  • alittle weathered, but she still runs nice - too bad they cut down the horns :(

PS I would like to see today's shite technology last this long!

  • Give it a 50 shot of Nos. lol!

  • 25 miles my ass!, More like 8-10

  • Fuck off with the vuvuzuela's in South-Africa. I take this one when Holland plays the final against Gemany.

  • i could have so much fun with one of these

  • The crew is a bunch of idiots, Even a combination of top shelf earplugs and earmuffs is barely deadening the sound enough to be "safe"

let alone in an enclosed garage and 5 feet away

  • Wow! A hemi @ only 182 hp? Musta been the gas.

  • And his age. Build in 1952.

  • i bet vetrans and older people were haveing heart attacks around town

  • @bearclawmoto Yeah true. A machine to warn people for total inialation. Why kill millions of people? For what????

  • 25 miles... damn!

  • Imagine what the neighbors were thinking when they heard that siren!!!

  • They think: there's Don Garlits again with his loud toys.

  • I want that Chrysler engine in my HotRod !

  • With 182 HP?? Not much for a HotRod.

  • I'm not interested in the HP, I just want it for the look !

    Hemi's are so beatiful....

  • @Keysmusic rofl, whats it supposed to be powered by? an all aluminum KB? lol

  • @DavidW2340 182 hp is not much. My 2008 Yamaha V-Max motorcycle is 180 hp but the Japs detuned it, other you have to renew your reartyre every 6 months.

  • @Keysmusic That 50 year old clunker make more torque at much less rpm than your 2008 Yamy..

I doubt your bike could tow what it was capable of.

  • @Keysmusic You aren't considering at all what era this engine is from. Plus with modern parts and upgrades, variants of these engines are capable of 500+ bhp easily today.

  • @Politcalamity That sounds like the biggest pile of shit i have ever heard, who told you that, or where is your maths to calculate that ? Fell free to PM me the sums if you have

  • @legaliseme To answer your 'question'...in the same place your worthless grammar and spelling are. But based upon your sniveling 'contact' with others in the discussion forum for this video, I would say you're more interested in promoting your bias against the United States than you are at actually discussing the subject of internal combustion engines. But please, by all means continue to enlighten us with your bitching and whining.

  • @Politcalamity See it was bullshit, you just pulled those figures out of your fucking arsehole, american engineers dont know half of fuck all

  • @legaliseme Are you high? I could produce information, actually, quite easily. But I'm enjoying keeping you riled up about your more obvious anti-U.S. agenda. Go to forums on these engines if you have trouble believing me, talk to people who have experience with these motors. Oh wait...most of them will be Americans... will you be able to converse with them without being a moop? Probably not. Nevermind the fact that you can't be arsed to google the information yourself.

  • @legaliseme bad

  • I just realized this guy is one of the main characters in the Harry Potter movies hahaha.

  • HE is also Valentin Zuchovsky in Golden Eye and the World is no enough.

This is a weird combo though, Don Garlits the Drag racing legend and a Scottish actor...sweet.

  • This was recorded for a program called Trains and Automobiles.

  • @kjz28 @kjz28 And not forget Cracker.

  • this is really cool, I would love to own one. With the complete with turn table, this is a peice of history and needs to be keep alive! I WANT ONE!

  • HAHA...That thing would be fun to have in the city.

  • I heard rumors that the chrysler air raid siren was so powerful that the air coming out could set stuff on fire

  • What rubbish!

  • No, it can't. But, being within 100' could effectively make you deaf. These are 138dB @ 100' and the pain threshold is at 137.5dB @ 100' and at that level it can easily deafen you.

  • i heard it was 150db at 100ft

  • 138dB @ 100'.

  • hmmm. lol?

  • WHAT?????

  • @budw84 I heard your mom was so easy even chuds like your father get laid.

  • @Polybun HUGE GASSY CAT TURD.

  • @budw84 you should punch whoever told you that.

  • @budw84 Read R. Murray Schafer's book "The New Soundscape". He talks about it in there, but I don't think it is the Chrysler. The loudspeaker that could do that only achieved it by producing ultra-sonic frequencies, way beyond human hearing, at very high amplitudes. Apart from digging through Schafer's research and some libraries you won't be able to find much info on it.

  • This guys is my hero.

  • That is cool...

  • I think the ones that are still on place can be started easily, those engines were built to stay on rooftops unattended for years and start quickly on request, the engine casings may be weather proof

  • damn i'd love to own of of those Chrysler Sirens!!

  • i tell you whot

  • jesus CHRIST 25 miles...

    that sucker is LOUD, boy...

  • The loudest siren ever built. 138 DB@100 FT incredible.

  • Tha't's awesome. Hagrid playing with sirens.

  • Hard to belive harry barry owns 2 of these.

  • There are two in Spokane Wa just rotting. One is on top of a huge metal tower, and the other is on top of one of the sky scrapers in downtown.

  • i know of the one on division... well used to be on division. what building is the one on down town?

  • I remember seeing this on tv when it was first shown... Fuckin' AWESOME!

Come on Don, you're the daddy, send that over to the war and peace show this year! Heheheheh

  • You can't make some fuckin' honda VTAK do that! :P

Sad thing is, i own a Honda.

    God I suck.

  • oh some one has probably one some where sitting in a barn and the owner dosent know what it is . what happend to this one?ive been looking.

  • whout i wouldent give for one of those

  • I WONT ONE!!!

  • good luck theres olny 5 left

  • Not exactly. There are hundreds left but they dont work or there rusting away on buildings or junk yards

  • i wonder what his navors thougth?

  • what tv show was this on?

  • Hi it's from a documentary done by Robbie Coltrane called "Coltrane's Planes & Automobiles" which is now available on dvd.

  • thanks!

  • Sounds like one pissed off cow ha ha

  • looks like the horns have been cut off or removed. i bet it would be allot louder with them reattached

  • Na I dont' know about that. I think he was just a wuss and didn't want to REALLY rev it up and maybe blow out some eardrums. C'mon, FLOOR it!!!

  • why the rotator is not functioning?

  • see at the beginning when he moved it by hand? Maybe the belts aren't even there. Easier to store in that little room.

  • what year was that siren built in

  • 1952

  • are there any chrysler sirens still in service?

  • lol yeah LMAO

  • then please post oa video of a chrysler in action

  • that souded like moter cycal befor he pulled the hadal ps. when they set those off if there was a nuclier atack ducking and covering ante going to save you if a nuclier bomb where to hit us eny thing in its path is going to be insinerated

  • love how the engine sounds. but it's only 180hp! my gti could run that too since it has 200hp! ^^

  • Well, I am not sure if your engine could run it. Yes, it is only 180 hp, but it is the torque that is needed to push those clutches and that huge siren up to speed.

  • asome!!!

  • Harkens back to a time when there was no shame in owning American made. That siren is a real monster!

  • What really amazes me is that I can barely hear the guy in the glasses shouting at 3:07 into the video! Listen carefully. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't heard it, as the siren (at least on axis) must be a good 55 dB louder. However, I once heard a dog barking in the next yard when I was near the base of a Federal Signal Thunderbolt during operation.

  • @acoustics101

Chrysler duking it out with a Thunderbolt? No contest. Thunderbolts could only be heard 5 miles away, tops, with an effective warning radius of 1 mile, compared to the Chrysler's 4 miles. Even so, at the base of most sirens it's surprisingly quiet.

I was disappointed he didn't push it all the way up to 4600 RPM (top speed). Then again, the fact that he even disengaged the clutch indoors was dangerous. But that sure sounds like a Chrysler!

  • The Chrysler was the most powerful warning siren ever put into production. It had a 70 dB warning radius of up to 4 miles! Of course it could still be heard from much further than that.

  • Cool, Where can I Get one?!

  • lol thats awesome, i wonder if the cops rocked up to find out what that noise was hahahahahaha

  • I love the people at the beginning: Oh no the nuclear missiles are coming! Get down on your hands and knees and put your coat over your head!

  • music to my ears!

  • that was an 100% american made v8 air raid siren lol that was awsomwe god bless america

  • yeah i think if anyone knows about Hemi's, Don does.

  • Hemis Rule! Even when they're not in cars. Go figure!

  • which siren is larger Chrysler or T-135?

  • Chrysler its louder too

  • the chrysler is larger and louder, but not made or used anymore, unlike the T-135.

  • Really? On the siren archive, there's a photo of one in Miami FL and a few photos of one in Rochester NY. So they're just not used anymore?

  • sounds like an oversized cow

  • Might I ask what show this if from? Looks fantastic.

  • It's called Robbie Coltrane's "Planes, Trains and Automobiles". I found a copy on eBay.

  • There is noway how you can hear a siren 25 miles away from it! Even with the loudest siren in the world it just doesn't make sence. I don't want this to sound boring but having a siren that can be heared 25 miles away from it is WAY TOO LOUD! People will loose their hearing if there close to it.

  • Maybe very faintly in the dead of night..?

  • You don't trust Don Garlits? Oh ye of little faith!

  • No kidding, by god if you can't, he'll put zoomies on it and feed it 10% nitro!

  • 138 dB at 30 METERS (instead of the usual 1, every doubling (5 here) in distance is a quartering of sound, so dB at 1 meter should have been about 20XdB@30) meter from the horn. Oh yeah, this thing could be heard from 25 miles. And yes it could, and did deafen people.

  • @Siren1000T At full power it could be hurd at this distance in this video they did not have the origanal victory siren horns on as they where 3ft long in a side by side configuration and as you rightly point out the noise to be heard at this distance was loud at full power put out over 130+ db of noise which is easily enough to tranmit sound upto 25 miles funnly enough they where never used other then for testing ...

  • HOLY MOLY! Thats what they need in out county!

  • whos brilliant idea was it to run a hemi in a closed garage?

  • don fired up swamp rat inside of a garage once, on nitro, for two veyr naive radio dj's. One had hearing problems for a year, the other got sick and vomited from the fumes. Don did what don always does, smile.

  • Can you really still hear this siren from 25 miles away from it?

  • Then maybe yes but this one no the horns are cut in half.

  • thats kick ass

  • From what I've understood, it's not really wise to run it with people that close on the front of the horns and in a closed space! :o The thing can create sound pressure of 138db at 100 feet distance. That can be really dangerous for your hearing. Had they really rev it up they'd be in serious trouble.

  • Actually its 138db at 200 feet.

  • It could be less than 138dB for this video, since the horns were cut short; in addition, they're not exponentially-shaped like the original Chrysler Air Raid Siren projectors were. That could decrease the resonance significantly...

Still, it seems excruciatingly loud for the most powerful siren ever made!

  • Hagred's in this movie.

  • Hagrid impersonating Robbie Coltrane!

  • Awesome!!

  • Hey cool I remember seeing this on TV. I really wanted one not for what it was designed for but to blast the cobwebs froms our thinking. Hell sometimes I love loud engines and this really "tickled my fancy"

  • now......

imagine if they beefed that engine up with a port and polish, bore, new pistons, and a nice set of loping rocker cams. That horn would make your kidneys explode.

    ahh american muscle.

  • No problem!

I've seen other clips from this same video posted on Youtube.

It's called Robbie Coltrane's "Planes, Trains and Automobiles". I found a copy on eBay.

  • Thanks for posting this! Been wanting to see this clip again for years. I believe it was from a series Robbie Coltraine did in the 90's. Do you have any more?

  • If any one lives near LA,ca. there is a siren like that on the old firestone tire building on firestone blvd.

  • I've visited that siren on the old Firestone building in South Gate in December. The engine is gone (removed sometime in the 80's) but the empty engine compartment, blower, and horns are still there.

There's a place directly across the street that sells used Japanese engines if anyone wants to make it sound again.

  • this siren rules for something that good looking

  • AWESOME - And siren collectors think the old Federal Thunderbolts kick ass. Jesus, this thing rules.

  • hey, thunderbolts are good give it that.

but this is still the best of the best.

  • I like Thunderbolt sirens, but this is just awesome.

  • Don you are da MAN!!!!!!

  • I think I saw their ears bleeding. This is worthy of 5 stars just for being able to stand in a garage with it running.

  • wow thats awesome thanks for posting the vid!!!!

  • A pleasure..

Just a pity that it's as short as it is..

I love Don Garlits. He's my hero!

  • It's too bad that we didn't get to see their reactions after they shut it off. Those horns are loud enough to actually cause nausea if they were to run it very long in that small of an area. Cool!

  • funny that they would do that in an enclosed garage, musta been loud. hope they realize that was no where NEAR the loudest it would get!

  • 57--- The 331 hemi could only put out 180hp stock. The Chrysler air raid siren OWNS

  • Brilliant. I havn't seen that since I was a kid.

  • before it horned it sounded like a motor

  • That's b/c the siren is on a clutch that has to be engaged. The motor drives an air compressor, pushing air into the siren rotor, or stator, then through the horns. These sirens were amazing, they were only made to cover 4 miles in all directions, due to the noise of a city. However, under certain conditions, like the plains states, at 330HP, these sirens could carry between 40 and 50 miles.
