Yep, that is me too. I have separate plates for my cuttlebug too. I too was horrified the first time I cut and it left marks. I thought I'd done something wrong and didn't use it again for cutting for a long time. Now I have two sets and emboss and cut to my hearts content. Love the video.
I found the perfect full proof technique that works on any embossing folder and any embossing machine without even having to cut pieces yourself. Email me and I'll send the easy directions.
I laughed when I saw your video because I also got seperate labeled B and C plates - a set for embossing and a set for cutting. I was horrified the first time I used a die-cut and it engraved the B-Plate, so I got another set so that I could indulge my anal-retentive tendencies. Thanks for the tutorial.
When I watched your tutorial, I liked to make the card, but I did not have a CB instead I had a wizard. The results were not as good as yours. Now I have a CB and made this tutorial, it came out beautiful Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much - I have only recently purchaseda cuttlebug :-)
I have "Tan" mat too - we have one in the UK called a No more shims mat.
You can also use it to emboss thin embossing plates (the old style use on a light box) or even things you find such as leaves, keys, buttons and charms :-)
So cute. I'm a little confused (too many steps for a novice like me). Is it the "nestability brass oval" that cut the center, but later only embossed the white cardstock?
@kjohnson8331: The tan mat is made by Spellbinders for use with the "Nestabilities", which is the oval frame she is using. It is a die used for cutting and embossing.
Hi I'm just getting started with the cuttlebug, I watched your video and I have a question. What is the tan mat? the oval gold frame what is it ? what is is made of and where do I purchase these items. thanks klj
What's the diffrence between the cuttlebug and the bigshot machines or the nestabilities machine? aren't they all used for the same cut and emboss porpuse?
You can use the cardboard (firm) on the back of notepads. It's about the same as chipboard. Or if you want you recycle you can use cereal box cardboard but you will need at least 4-5 layers to be equal.
Thank you. I did manage to cut the card, and tried to use 2 thicknesses of the heavy card but it would not go through , htried with lighter card but have not yet been able to emboss like the tutorial. it has either embossed much the same or just a little lighter in the hole. . Has been quite frustrating. can anyone send typed instructions please.
Have you tried using a rubber mat (same size as plates) with the thinner cardboard?. I use one every time I emboss now and it really improves the detail. If two pieces of the heavy board is to thick another option is to use 1 heavy and add a sheet of regular cardstock (folder size) on top of the top plate. Keep adding cardstock until it does not go through your machine.
wow, thats brilliant, I knew that we crafters have to find out lots of new things we can do with die cutting machines but this is the best idea I have come across, thanks for showing it so well
Thanks for this! I've just done this using my Cuttlebug and followed your video except that I found I only needed to use one piece of the chipboard that I had.
could you please tell me the name of the embossing folder you're using....love the look of the potential card you are making and would love to know the name of the polka dots embossing folder thank you so much....got my cuttle bug today for my bday i'm so very excited to use it
Thank you for taking the time to show this - I never would have thought of this technique. Your videos are so easy to follow - look forward to seeing more!

When you do the embossing of the oval, what kind of a mat did you put it on? A tin mat? A ten mat? I couldn't hear the word. Thanks. celticknit

Sue7777000 1 year ago
@Sue7777000 ..you can buy them at Joan's or online retailers carry them. It's called an embossing mat (tan) by spellbinders.

Great idea , I am keen to try ,please tell me if the chipboard is like our cardboard in Aus. As you cut it with the macine it can't be too hard.
