Would you recommend "tac au tac"? I can't seem to get hold of it here in the UK.

@vacher45 honestly, for basic vocab and getting a grip on the language, yes...but I had a similar book in high school sophomore year...so if you have less than two years French experience, definitely. If you want to learn to SPEAK French fluently, I would recommend watching news and listening to music and practicing, since one can read a million educational books and not know how to communicate properly. Hope the long-winded answer helped. :)

@cmporganics Thank you for advice!I have a rather rudimentary standard of French as I've only been at it a few months. I also think it's better to find materials in a real context as you say through news and real conversations etc. I feel I have a ok passive knowledge but activating it seems to be a real problem! I have heard Assimil 'Using French' is pretty effective, but haven't tried it.

@vacher45 I agree; contextual learning and immersion are truly the best techniques. If you'd like, I could teach you French on Skype or by e-mail...I know my speaking is rather mediocre (excellent by American standards =P), but I'm going on 9 years of experience, so I think I could help.

j'ai lu que "excité" c'est pas un bon mot si tu veux dire "excited" en anglais. c'est mieux si tu dis "j'ai vraiment hâte de regarder le match de football americain" pour example

@cmporganics Actually I received an A grade for my advanced level oral exam French qualification and I'm now studying it at university. I might not be able to speak as spontaneously as you (that is, if you weren't reading what you were saying off the screen) but I certainly have a better accent.

@cmporganics Also you made several noticeable errors in your wording. You used "Donc" at the start of a sentence, presumably to mean "So..." in your sentence "So, my teacher told me I speak French too fast" (lol). Donc means "Therefore". It can only be used in sentences such as "I like cake so(therefore) I eat it a lot". It cant be used at the start. You should use "Eh bien.." or "Alors".

@cmporganics Oh yes, also, you made a HUGE mistake at the start. You said "Mon prof a dit moi que..." What you're saying there is "My teacher said me that..." You should have said "Mon prof m'a dit que". That is using an indirect object pronoun to turn the sentence into "My teacher said TO me that..."

@slipkon too fast to be comprehensible. In the classroom, I used to try new big vocab words in every example and she said its better to learn the word first rather than throwing it the first time in so many words. Basically, trying to improve my overall fluency instead of just comprehensiveness.

She's a Maghrebine and lived in France. I think she's heard a real french conversation or two.
