You total idiot! Yes i have known the background to this beautiful music for at least 12 years and maybe more, unlike you! So don't even bother attempting to inform me about something you have only just latched on to.

Wow. Hold on guys. This is an incredible performance both vocally and as an orchestra. You both happened upon it for the same reasons, regardless of the fact that it is either racially or politically charged. It is obvious to me personally that Gorecki was charged about the situation be it 60 years ago as history or pervasive in our modern times as reality.
What bothers me... I wish to read text regarding the art, and I find the only voices out here in the media, two people having an argument.
The words were those of 18-year-old Helena Wanda Błażusiakówna, a highland woman incarcerated on 25 September, 1944. It read "O Mamo nie płacz nie—Niebios Przeczysta Królowo Ty zawsze wspieraj mnie" (Oh Mamma do not cry—Immaculate Queen of Heaven support me always).
Yes, it actually slowed my heart beat....well, it felt that way.....It's too beautiful to compare to anything....just have to let it wash over you and then think........hmmm, I can die now.
Simply haunting and breath-taking if you can understand the words... inspired by the graffiti found in Zakopane, Poland.... "mama dont cry...." etc etc.
there once was a girl named Lorla. She ran away from home because her parents always hit her and yelled at her. She went through a graveyard. She got killed by a dead girl living there. Her spirit still walks the earth and she could be ANYWHERE. if you don't post this to at least 5 videos she will appear under your bed at exactly 12:00 midnight and slash your throat...just like how the dead girl killed her. Hurry, you only have 5 minutes
There will hardly be any better performance and interpretation than the one Dawn Upshaw offered. She will always be my favorite, for depth and expressivity
Nevertheless, it's this song itself that has such an intense moving power. I'm completely ravished by it
Grafitti yes, a Prayer to the Blessed Lady Mary it is. "No Mother do not weap, most chaste Queen of Heaven, support me always, Zdrowas Mario"
Zakopane Prayer, written on the wall of cell number 3 in the 'Palace' the Gestapo headquarters by Helena Wanda Blazusiakowna 18 years old, imprisoned since 26th, September, 1944. Helena died in prison cell number 3. God rest her soul.
This is great. I've only heard the original version before, and this is my all time favorite piece of music, right next to Barber's Adagio for Strings.
The music is wonderful, to say the least! ... and a beautiful voice! ... But I am sorry to say, to see Rebecca Evans bedecked in such jolly finery, and painted like a doll, almost for operetta; all set to sing this utterly tragic song, was a most unforgivable faux pas. On a lighter note, I'd love to ask Rebecca Evans if she would like to see the Queen in a mini-skirt; inappropriate, of course, in exactly the same tasteless way! Sorry Rebecca!
I'm totally agree. That kind of things frivolizate the dramatical surround of this work. Evans is a great singer, of course, but her treatment doesn´t present the "naturalist" treatment of voice that Gorecki asked for in the score, in that particella. Bayrakdarian - who also has recorded for tv and broadcasting - chooses a better wardrobe and vocal style of interpretation.
@wigs666 No, when she is singing about death and God; about the things happened to the Judes in Poland at that time - it would be better if she would not wear such an "big" jewelery. But, I think, not everyone can undrstand it. I am from Poland and I really know what was happening here 70 years ago - from the stories from my grandfather and grandmother...
@CUERVOBRILLANTE I totally agree, intended to write exactly the same, but saw you had commented the operetta outfit of Rebecca Evans. And all that jewelry! The attention should go to the song, words and/or melody and not to glamour and glitter. What a stupid mistake.I have seen soprano Bayrakdarian in similar repertoire in modest clothing totally devoted to the music and the subject. The voice should be part of the orchestra like the late soprano Arleen Auger was always an instrument, not a star.
So hauntingly beautiful and sad at the same time. My heart is "full" as I listen to Rebecca Evans. Full of sadness, longing and peace that I can't explain.
She has the perfect voice for this. I love hearing Dawn Upshaw and Isabel Bayrakdarian sing this, but Rebecca Evans voice captures something of the poor 18-year old Helena crying out still from that Gestapo cell.
This movement is actually from the words scratched into the Gestapo's headquarters in Zadopane by Helena Wanda Blazusiakówna, praying to the holy mother. The last movement is a mother searching for her child. All three movements are heartbreaking, though.
i was wondering if evens would ever sing this. thank go she did. next another great welsh singer kathrine jenkins should do it as well!!! and i men it
I have listened to this for 8 years and never seen a performance. THANK YOU!!
This is the most perfect piece of music I have ever heard. It neutralises negative moods and elicits all sort of sensations!!
Thanks again!
PS: Does anybody know of similar music please? I'm not a real lover of opera style music, but this and the rest of the suite is something else. If so please reply with suggestions.
That's hard; Górecki's style is very unique. You could try other still-living composers like Whitacre or Lauridsen. Górecki is something of a mix between Late Eastern, of whom Shostakovich is similar, and French Impressionism, so composers like Debussy and Fauré. Mahler also has a song cycle on the theme of parenthood and loss: Die Kindertotenlieder. Kathleen Ferrier's interpretation is especially beautiful.
Thank you for those susggestions, you help widen my appreciation for this music. I will need to listen a few times to what I have found, and keep an eye out for the others. Thanks again!
You might also like to hear "Marietta's Lied" by Korngold from his opera "Der Todt Stade". There is a recording on YouTube, I'm sure. Similar textures and arching phrases that remind me of an early Gorecki...
Excellent thank you. Marietta's Lied and some other pieces are a little similar, don't quite match Górecki for me but it's close. It is difficult finding this music online to sample and when I do the quality of recording is poor. But I now know what I'm looking for!! Thanks for this and take care!!

This movement is actually from the words scratched into the Gestapo's headquarters in Zadopane by Helena Wanda Blazusiakówna, praying to the holy mother. The last movement is a mother searching for her child. All three movements are heartbreaking, though.

this is about a mother looking to see if her son survived after a concentration camp was released... and she can't find him.

wow- that's a tall order!
This symphony was born out of the Holocaust and conveys the triumph of hope over despair,
but some of my favourite pieces would be'The Mission' by Ennio Morricone & 'The Lark Ascending' by Vaughan Wiliams.
