So, I def emphathize with you that alot of his stuff can coe off as shitty or just noise but if you reserch some of his stuff you may be able to come up with some gems. I don't know why people rip on Terry so bad, he proved he can play the small kit back in the 70's (not like he needs to prove anything though). 40 years on he's still trying to develop his sound by thinking about melodic tuning and listening to international rhythms then implementing them into that thing he does. Terry deserves serious respect, not only a great ambassador but also a fantastic player!

If you really think about it, What Terry Bozio is doing is no different than a xylophonists or marimba player does....for that matter his relevance is the same as a guitartis or pianist....he just uses drums to create the medolic sounds he uses in his music.....Terry Bozio is a innovator. In order for him to create music, he needs to be able to play chords and changes keys.....and for that, an acoustic drummer is going to need a larger than normal set. So don't hate....Participate.

@soulinrevolt yes, playing a groove and keeping time usually needs only a small set-up. when creativity comes into play, though, the rules change dramatically. Terry's kit isn't a drum set, it just looks like one :) it is tuned to notes, in scales, he plays melodies and songs.. NOT just beats and grooves. think of it as a grand piano.. a piano with 4 notes won't offer the width of expression that an 88-key grand piano does.

@soulinrevolt Indeed, as a composer AND a drummer, Terry is a man who focuses on ostinatos and phrases as much as rhythm and beats, which he plays with such a dexterity that's hard to match. For that reason, he needs a wide amount of availabilty to reach those musical heights in his kit and give off the proper sound that he wants in a precise manner. He's not my favorite drummer (Bonham, Peart and Portnoy take that spot), but damned if he's not the best. Check out Bozzio Levin Stevens.

@s His name is TERRY, not Tony, he is 60 years old & is a genius. One of the most influential drummers ever. He is a musician, classically trained, not Charlie Watts. Each drum has a purpose. The whole is an orchestra. He writes classical music for drum kit. Each drum is tuned to a note. Many "drummers" have massive kits for show (Alex Van Halen). His ego is intact & he is rather soft spoken. I've interviewed him. The kit is not meant to impress it is designed to express & help him make music.

The fact of the matter is, having that set is what makes it enjoyable for them to play, which means we the fans get to continue enjoying their music. Kids...kids. One of the great all-time drummers. The dude can play 4 separate grooves at the same time...one with each limb. And he was the first drummer to play ostenattos on the kit. Heck...if you play with Frank Zappa as a youngster, you have to be good. So yeah...he has a lot of drums...but he's the one guy who isn't "overcompensating" for anything. This dude can actually play that kit.
