The downsides to magnum handguns are usually strong recoil and muzzle blast. They can be downright deafening to shoot. Also, a lot of guys just like to shoot rifles more. I know that's true for me. But you're right about the distance. That moose was close.
I was under the impression that the all important quality of the various elghunds is that they do NOT frighten the moose into running away. If the moose bolts neither dog nor hunter could keep up with it. The object of the game is to first sniff the moose out, then hang around it making a lot of noise to guide the hunter in to do the honors. That's where the dog's skill and expertise come in to play--to keep the moose in one place.
@pinz2022 This makes good sense for sure....and I appreciate you sharing this with me. I have only used a dog for tracking an animal...BUT, how I wish that we could use the elghunds here in British Columbia, Canada.

I always found the dogs fascinating but this always seemed like plain meat-getting to me. Archeological remains confirm these dogs and this style of hunting were probably fully-developed from Central Europe to the Ural Mountains 10,000 years before anyone thought of hunting as a sport.
