this isn't a big conspiracy to trick you esalek, obviously no one can do that. i'm sorry the world isn't as black and white as you want it to be. why don't you take up your issues with those at the Cornucopia Institute and go after the people who created all of these problems in the first place- the USDA!
esalek, Did you protest this in any manner while it was happening? Did you sign any petitions? Did you call or write to the California Almond Board, the FDA & the USDA ? Did you help the Cornucopia Institute in any way? Most importantly~ Are you from California? If you were- Would you support the farmers here? There are farmers here who are doing their best to provide the rawest almonds allowed by law. ~Believe me, I too want my almonds to sprout ! ...but first I support CA farmers.

Most of us that care about natural and alive foods know, that California organic almonds must now be pasteurized for retail sale and the USDA allows pasteurized almonds to be labeled as raw. But pasteurization and mislabeling pasteurized almonds as raw should be a crime against both farmers and consumers!
On the website: "... the almonds we are offering have been processed in compliance with the USDA rule that went into effect in September 2007. They are exposed to steam for 8 seconds at 210- 215°F. Then for 44 seconds they are moved through a dehydrating tunnel to remove the moisture resulting from the steam.The circulating air temperature is 391- 395°F. During this process the almonds are 221-220°F on their surface and 110- 115°F at their core."

on their website it does indeed state that they use sterilized, steamed almonds. granted it is made to look as if they use completely raw almonds.
i would like to experiment and see if their almonds sprout when soaked properly. that would tell us whether they are "alive" or not.
