@KKK5may DEAD SPACE tries to threat you physically. Amnesia will scare the shit out of you without even attacking you, because you imagine yourself what will happen. The difference here is: Dead Space will try to terrify you in a moment you don't except it, but Amnesia will let you know. Only your own mind, knows how to frighten yourself. ;)

It's part of the principle that "nothing is scarier". Play Amnesia and allow yourself to be immersed into the game world, and you should understand. It's one of the few horror games I know of that are genuinely sophisticated.

On another note, Amnesia has caused me to violently shake in fear at a number of points.

Well, no. You do encounter monsters, and there is definitely much adrenaline at points. But, generally, the game has the player so tense and paranoid beforehand that they're an absolute wreck even before that occurs, and the monsters are slightly more rare than in many other survival horrors.
