I wrote this song with johnny keith in 1965. She was due to sing it in the first (and only) Brighton song festival. However, Tim Springfield came back into the country with a week to go and she sang his song "Here in your arms". So, we only made the B side. I wasn't aware there were any recordings of our song in existence!
What a beautiful song. I've never heard it before. was it ever on a LP.I think it's about time Columbia or E.M.I got their act together and released a CD of all the tracks that never made it to an album. Thanks oldolds53 from Melbourne Australia.
yes we know dear...all men are not dumb...or as we say here: "Don't go shooting all the dogs just because one has fleas..." Why would you think that we would not know the surname: Shapiro was Yiddish? Olds53, Anders, and I are of the Swedish School of Smarts!
LaVerne37, this beautiful song seems to have been written for Helen with coy references to her brief affair with John Lennon (mentioned in her autobiography).
Helen mentions that when they toured together that he was married(unknown at the time,) and she, along with thousands of other girls had a crush on him. "He was very protective of me and I was probably closer to him than any of the others, although they all called me "Helly," and treated me like some kind of kid sister."
I'm quite aware of that period (1963), though in her autobiography she mentions meeting up with him (Lennon) several times from 1963 until1965, the last time she said she saw him. She doesn't elaborate in detail as to the extent of their bond, but the hints seem to be there between the lines in the accounts entailed in her autobiography and the lyrics of "Only Once". Not to mention the fact that now, as an evangelical convert in later life, she logically would appear less likely to elaborate.
you could be "spot on," but we shall never know...my mind just did not wander that direction when I was reading her bio...I'm not saying that it could or could not have happened. I'm just here for the music...
