Incorrect. Yoshi has his own icon because he represents the Yoshi's Island series rather than the Mario series. The series that he is the main star in.

Same goes for the Kongs, who represent Donkey Kong Country, and Wario, who represents WarioWare.

You said that they "had too many Mario people, so that's why Yoshi is a Yoshi character". Which is WRONG. The original Smash Bros. had Mario and Luigi. That's IT. OMG! TWO IS TOO MUCH!!!

Yoshi was made a Yoshi character because he has his own series, not because "Mario had too many characters".
