As you say - each to his own - but listening to both again - there is (I feel) just no contest between the beautiful, rounded tone of Dickson's glorious voice to Olivia's very nice but sometimes worryingly thin voice. We will have to agree to differ.
Barbara Dickson (NOT Dickinson!!) has had no formal training. She began her career in folk music, not Broadway. She is an exceptionally gifted singer with near perfect pitch and a strong, pure powerful tone. . Olivia is a nice singer but that's it. I think Olivia's great - but she would never claim to be a great singer. She is perfectly aware of her limitations and works very well within them. She is simply not in the same league as Barbara Dickson. Sorry!
@rightmoment Olivia's voice is more beautiful to me. That doesn't make Barbara any less of a great singer. I realize her voice is beautiful to you and that is completely okay. Some would say Gerry Rafferty's version is better than Barbara or Olivia... and that is perfectly okay. I will always prefer Olivia's because I love her vocal tone and her songs are milestones back to my childhood which is meaningful to me.
I have a lot of--and simply adore--Gerry Raffert's music--some of his songs were really heart-reaching and it is such a great pity that for the most part,Baker Street,is all that he is recognized for.
This song in particular is gorgeous--his voice is out of this world--so mellow and gentle. This takes nothing away from Barbara's version--it is her own and just lovely, too!
This song is the best ballad ever. I only heard it for the first time a couple of years ago and it moved me to tears, and I'm a grumpy 51 year old git. Most songs nowadays sound like they were written because the writer was under contract to produce something, but this song is truly inspired. I love Olivia Newton-John, but she massacred this song by over-performing it. This version is very good, but you have to listen to Gerry Rafferty's original to hear it at its best. Sieze the day folks.
Barbara was a backing singer on a number of Gerry's recordings. Wish there was a lot more of Gerry's stuff available, he made great albums, but most people only know Baker Street - what great music they're missing!
Gerry was also a backing singer on some of Barbara's recordings. The first was in 1974 when he sang backing on the cast album of "John, Paul, George, Ringo...and Bert. They also recorded a duet "Times they are a changin' on Barbara's 1992 album of Dylan covers. Its really excellent. Their voices work so well together.
Olivia's version was the first time I heard this and I thought it was one of the most beautiful songs I'd ever heard. Barbara sings this with such emotion - I never tire of hearing her sing it.

Easy to listen to song, given the special
treatment that Barbara gives to all G.R.
material.

This song you can hear all day long, it's a pitty no one knows it. Nearly all songs of Gerry Rafferty are from another world.

Thanks for putting Barbara's version on Youtube.

Just beautiful. One of the most moving songs I've heard, and Barbara's voice completes the circle.

Olivia Newton-John sings this with a stunning vocal finale as the last track of her 1985 cd, 'Soul Kiss'.
Great song.
