@songplugger I am a fan of Grable's but if there are similarities to MM its probably because Jack Cole choreographed both stars while they were at 20th. If you watch early Mitzi Gaynor films you'll see the same type of choreography. MM became a huge star precisely because she was not copying anyone. She was unique to the 50's and the successor to Grable. MM was the last of the the 20 Century Fox blondes. They tried to manufacture Sheree North and Mansfield but the public didn't buy them .
@iamsultana - Yeah, the problem is...Betty was "old" at this point compared to Marilyn and many of the film critics of the time commented on her 'spreading' figure. Betty was 35 at the time this film was made - Marilyn was 25. This film was one of Grable's last and Marilyn's rise was no coincidence.
I wonder if this was based on Mae West's nightclub act of about this time, when she also appeared onstage with toga-and-sandal-clad musclemen.
Anyone notice that Betty addresses one of her backup dancers as "Sappho" when she's first asking if anyone's seen Joe? Not that the real-life Sappho would've cared about the whereabouts of some man, regardless of whether he had muscles or not.
Boy, it's hard to see anything beyond the divine Betty and a swell cameo by Gwen - but as I watched this, I realized how much Bob Cole influenced Fosse's work. I wish I could see this whole movie! Betty looks fabulous!!!!!
Fat? Look at that indented tummy. Her center is as tight as can be! Who is the featured dancer next to Gwen Verdon? What a hot number. And what an idea to combine biblical-era with latin dancing and music. Pure kitsch.
@dmarie9. Thanks for uploading this Betty Grable dance routine which i think is the hottest i have ever seen her in. I have seen this film once or twice before but it is very rarely ever aired in the UK which is a pity because it is a very entertaining movie deserving of more air time. Finally, Betty was famous for having her legs insured for a million dollars but the legendary Gwen Verdon & her dance partner had some terrific hot legs on display here, didn't they?.
MEET ME AFTER THE SHOW showcased all of Betty's abilities better than anything that she ever did on film. Jack Cole choreograhed the numbers bringing out the best of her dancing abilities. The songs, all jazzy and fun, were written by Juke Styne and Leo Robin who had also penned the score for GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES. The script was fun and breezy, and Betty ran with it giving one of her most uninhibited and funny comedic performances. Such a shame it was made near the end of her FOX career.
This is one of my favorite Grable numbers and films. It is a shame that she was considered 'old' and 'fat' when this film came out. This is a film that I fear will never make it to DVD and it is a shame. It is one of her best films for showcasing her dancing ability!
I've always been a fan of Betty Grable.....she and Gwen Verdon are great....wish we could see this kind of talent again. Thanks!!

Choreography by the legendary Jack Cole ("created" Marilyn's famous Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend number, etc)

Betty is a legend and she is not fat at all. She is a talented beautiful tap dancer. One of my favorites.

What a shame! I love Betty, but i'ts hard to see the legendary Gwen Verdon playing second fiddle to her! Thanks again for this.

I have to respectfully disagree with you MA. Betty is just as much as a legend as Gwen. This vehicle just happened to be hers.

THANK YOU!!! Betty's HOTTEST number ever. And all those 'Marilyn' tid-bits were filmed when MM was still a Fox starlet.
Who was copying who? =)
