Why doesn't he talk about The Animated Series? He was the only actor who was in all the episodes and movies featuring the original crew, so I would think he'd talk about all of it.
By the way, The Cage isn't the only episode of the original Trek that featured Spock but not Kirk. There was an animated episode as well, which is the main reason I'm wondering why it wasn't discussed.
2:44 'This is our place of my family. This is our place of Hakuna Matata' is what I was half-sure Spock was gonna say here; and the phrase turned out to be something opposite.
@scorpioman1000 That limp is left over from the underused 'Rigel VII battle' back story. The crew were all hurt and rapped up. You can even see Lylers hand all bandaged up in the bridge scenes.
You remember Pikes line to his bridge crew: "You feel up to it?" ?
Now we know that the communicators that we thought were high tech were actually low-tech cell phones. No video or texting even though it's hundreds of years into the future! And that screen on the bridge was a large flat-screen TV or maybe a small Jumbotron! We still don't have the transporter, though. Considering how often that thing failed on an Enterprise that supposedly had the best engineering crew in Starfleet, that's probably a good thing!
Interesting that he says in this video that he and Shatner have been friends ever since Star Trek. I've seen him in other videos saying that he usually tries to avoid Shatner. Once in a while, he said, he can't help himself and talks to William Shatner.
Suits at IBM missed out one the personal computer market to - so much for "Higher Learning". This series will be alive long into the future's grand children. Until it becomes reality like the communicator and the cell-phone. Live long and prosper indeed...
'City on the edge of forever' & 'Assignment: Earth' are two of my favourites. Indeed, the two are connected through the prospect of nuclear conflict. I have met up with a similar dilemma, in respect to the two A-bombs dropped on Japan. It creates a moral conflict in this era. But, as with 'City on the edge of forever', the events have to be analysed in 1940s terms.
More recently, Nimoy hosted a Star Trek marathon on TV and said that he was not the first choice to be Mr. Spock. He said Gene Roddenberry had considered the actor George Lindsey for the role. Of course, Lindsey did go on to fame on the Andy Griffith Show as Gomer Pyle's cousin, Guber.
P.S - I wish Lindsey had gotten the part along with Don Knotts as Capt. Kirk, Floyd Lawson (Floyd the Barber) as Scotty & Francis Bavier (Aunt Bea) as Uhura.
Ah, i remember this Star Trek Special. It did ran in the early 90s on german TV, dubbed of course but having Mr. Nimoys german Dubb voice from Star Trek again.
I love this special because it gave a really interesting insight from Mr. Nimoys point of view.
Spock is my all time favorite TV character. To my delight, he has managed to appear in other ST series and movies. I have followed Mr. Nimoy over the years and find him to be humorous and inspiring. I watched the original series as a kid. I must confess that I had a crush on Kirk, but wanted to be Spock!

in "city on edge of forever"there is some paradoxes there that makes it so it does not work at all. When the doctor ran through the thing and changed past.scotty and the rest would not be waiting there for anyone to return from the past for they would not be there. The portal said"everything you knew is gone",there would be nothing for them to return to.
Nimoy is a class act. Alot of stars would be sick to death of their character...40yrs! Nimoy has come to terms with Star Trek and his fans and has realized they have given him something not every actor will achieve...a character that is loved by millions and that has generated thought, talk and introspection; a more than comfortable living. I just don't feel that from Shatner. Although Shatner may have his Emmys, give me Nimoy any day.
At one point, he did get sick of the character, and wrote a novel about it. He warmed up to the role, of course, and is still doing it after 33-34 years.
@eddievhfan1984 : No. Read "I Am Not Spock", which is no doubt the book you are referring to. The title was widely misinterpreted. Guess what? In fact, Leonard Nimoy is not literally Spock.
The title of his 1995 book "I Am Spock" was a reaction to the wide-spread misinterpretation of the title of the 1977 book. This myth needs to be laid to rest once and for all.
@sbergman27 Yeah, I wouldn't say he exactly got "sick" of his character, rather (and this was mainly was "IANS" focused on) he wanted to be seen as MORE than just Spock. He wanted to be recognized as Leonard Nimoy as well. In 1977 that was difficult for him. However, after proving to be not only a marvelous actor, but director and photographer as well he has gone on to make quite a name for himself outside of the ST franchise as well. It's well deserved for he is truly a medley of talent.
wow, i havent seen this since i was a teenager. My family got their very first VCR (betamax no less! LOL) and it was one of the first things I taped... and then watched to smithereens. I was 13 years old. this really does bring back memories. thanks for posting this!!
@evilsmileyface666 i'd have to say that the sexiest voice in the universe is a tie between Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, Sean Connery, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, & Carl Sagan ^^
@evilsmileyface666 You know from Trek history Nemoy and crew reported the girls were ga ga over him, and that more than one thought his ears and eyebrow make up was Devilishly sexy. It's not just you. I would laugh; but Vulcans are incapable of feeling the required emotion behavior requisite... Excuse me. 'Time to meditate about how logic keeps us Vulcans from orgiastic promiscuity and tearing each others throats out. Vulcan women you know; they're so damned sexy. Where's that candle!!!
I'm really glad Shatner got the role over the Pike character. I'm still kinda new to the series, and Kirk hasn't been my favorite - I love Leonard's Spock - but watching this makes me appreciate Kirk more, and what he brought to the series. Yeah, the Shatman is starting to grow on me... <3
That story was written by Harlan Ellison & years later he published the original script. In it, a guest star (not McCoy, but a crew member) deals in 'drug music' - sound waves that get people stoned. He tries to get away by jumping thru the time portal. In March 2009, Ellison filed suit against Paramount for payment of 25% of net receipts from merchandising, publishing and other income from the episode since 1967. The suit also names the Writers Guild for failing to act on his behalf.
@Robotdrummerzzk From Wikipedia: "In the original script, Lieutenant Richard Beckwith, a drug dealer selling the illegal "Jewels of Sound", kills Lieutenant LeBeque after he threatens to expose Beckwith's activities. After escaping to the planet's surface, with Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Yeoman Rand, and six Security guards close on his heels, he enters a Time Vortex, watched over by the Guardians of Forever, to escape." The time changes cause the Enterprise to become a pirate ship.
"Broader Acting Style" HA, that's putting it mildly. don't get me wrong, i love Star Trek and Captain Kirk, but William Shatner takes over acting to a whole new level.
The original trailer was great, and so was Jeffrey Hunter. But still im glad they choose Shatner. The relationship between Kirk and Spock was brilliant
You are so right, my own father was very racist against black people and was observing Star Trek that I realised he could only be wrong about this therefore today I´m always trying to be more tolerant and open minded with different culture and people, thanks Gene.
At the first Star trek convention in 73, Roddenberry said.." I had to get rid of the woman in order to keep the alien character on the show. I then married the woman, but later realized..I could not possibly have done it the other way around!"
I heard Number One was cut by NBC because the network thought it was a conflict of interests for the executive producer of the show to be dating and married to one of the performers, not because they couldn't believe a female could be the XO of a starship.
The monster in that early episode of Star Trek reminds me of a Morlock from the Time Machine. Even died the same, slumped against the wall with his head down.
try not to rub it, blow your nose gently, otherwise the skin gets thicker. also dont sleep resting to hard on your ears they grow larger too. ...hang on, gotta check mine.
Did the network really love it enough to order a second pilot? Or because the first one was so expensive to make, they wanted to give one more chance (after retooling to keep the suits happy) to reap the costs of the first pilot back? Possibly a combo of both...
The network told Gene (Roddenberry)to get rid of the guy with the ears! Wow! That blows my mind! Go figure that one out. Gene was right for battling on. Good on you for sharing this cool video.
Why doesn't he talk about The Animated Series? He was the only actor who was in all the episodes and movies featuring the original crew, so I would think he'd talk about all of it.

How did his nose get bigger as he grew older?

Because he is jewish.

hmm,I only asked because I felt that perhaps alcohol had something to do with the corpusels around the nose etc.

Oh wow, all of their noses got bigger, even Shatners! I guess it just happens naturally as you age. I guess I better go check mine now!!

Did the network really love it enough to order a second pilot? Or because the first one was so expensive to make, they wanted to give one more chance (after retooling to keep the suits happy) to reap the costs of the first pilot back? Possibly a combo of both...

This was the first thing I ever recorded on a VCR. I still have it, but it is not in great shape (like me!) Thanks so much!

The network told Gene (Roddenberry)to get rid of the guy with the ears! Wow! That blows my mind! Go figure that one out. Gene was right for battling on. Good on you for sharing this cool video.
