Reminds me of "The rite of Spring," by Igor Stravinsky. One passage in particular, it has been said, "That page is sixty years old, but it's never been topped for sophisticated handling of primitive rhythms...", and of the work as a whole, "...it's also got the best dissonances anyone ever thought up, and the best asymmetries and polytonalities and polyrhythms and whatever else you care to name." Now someone is approaching that level of sophistication. Brilliant.
Never in my life have i heard something so moving and awe inspiring. You have done for music what Paint has done for life on earth. God Speed you magnificent soul.
Thanks so much. I was on the verge of suicide but by listening to this I reconsidered my outlook on life and decided to become a stronger and happier person. I love you and you are beautiful; don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
96 points indeed, truelove incredible addition to the youtube community and i count myself among a lucky 44,000 people to have viewed/heard this masterpiece.
THank you, Tyondai Braxton. You have given meaning to my life. Before I found this video, I was nothing but a mere human, a bloodsucking parasite on the edge of society who had neither lived nor loved and, if humanity had its way, would likely do neither for much longer. However, thanks to your funky beats, I have found a new lease on life. I realize now that life is what we make it, and I choose to make it the best that I can. Thank you Tyondai, and may your hallowed memory last for eternity.
It was convnient for him and battles to separe, Battles is still awsome and Tyondai is also great, so the result is they are now making more music. Battles is a one band Army or maybe a one band musical hurricane of gofdly awesomeness and this guy is a one man orchestra, Their both great
I like Gloss Drop, it's doesn't appeal to me as much as Mirrored but that's more because of the change in direction. I do miss Tyondai's orchestral arrangements though, but from the interviews I've read it seems like they were stagnating before he left. Evidence: the line.
i tried listening to some of battles new music and couldn't figure out why my favorite bad was so bland and nothing like they were before. Than I realized Tyondai was the creative force behind Battles, i came here and shed a tear of joy
I actually think it might be better that he left, cause now he can make music like this and Battles can continue in well the direction they're going in now and we'll get double the music for it! Neither of them need each other. This is AMAZING and I absolutely love Battles new album! So I don't have a problem that they went different ways at all, I definitely think that they're both better off for it!
Please don't kill me when i say this, but i feel like he "was" Battles. Obviously there is no "I" in team, but holy crap he was the ecstasy in the band.
Sound like a soundrack for a movie that has all the genres in, like a terror-comedy-drama-zombie-musical-dance-documental-gay-action-biopic-indie movie
I honestly don't even know what to think of this. This is kind of amazing, and I have to agree with the commenter saying that "Frank Zappa would have enjoyed hearing this." This wasn't what I expected at all, but kinda in a good way.
@lapoiarecords It says "the centerpiece of Battles' frontman Tyondai Braxton's new album," the apostrophe indicating a possessive form. As in, the centerpiece of the new album of the frontman of Battles. Learn how to read properly, before you go around insulting people. And yes, I'm aware Tyondai is no longer part of Battles.
It has some great concoctions of timbres, and some brilliant passages that melt my face. It also has a lot of ambition behind it, which is why I respect it. It's just not quite there yet. If Braxton keeps it up, and continues to push himself and his compositions, I think he'll create more matured and organized work. This could very well be the unsuspected blueprint of a great composers career. Not everyone starts out on the right foot from the start! He's got the math rock touch though, <3.
Zappa's "crap"..?? So you've heard all 60-70 albums and some of the countless high quality live boots? And Nothing registers as great, imaginative music??
TB is very impressive. He's definitely making my brain listen on several planes of action simultaneously.
But at the 1:30 mark this piece is already exploding all over the place. It gets kitchen sinky real fast. The same processed vocal / percussion thump gets used ad nauseum, like "OK, POLYRHYTHM. WE GET IT".
I heard his solo piece Jackpot yesterday and it just blew my mind.
This sure beats Bang on a Can though, those composers suck!
Now this is some brilliant stuff.
