  • Loved it so much I ordered the sheet music. It just arrived from Stropes. Now I really have my work cut out for me.

  • The "Mother Earth opens up and Ents and Elves start to sing Ode to Joy" low C at 1.32 is barely heard (get the eponymous CD for that), but other than that -- what a treat. It's been nearly 30 years, and no one's even come close. It is surreal that this is playable, period, to say nothing about how beautiful this is. Eg, the bit at 3.21 onwards ... It's also really funny that a 50 cent-Tyson video is a promoted one for this. A-yup, That's what Michael Hedges aficionados are looking for.

  • One of the greatest musicians of all time.........

  • This is phenomenal. What a loss to music to have this guy go so early.

  • Absolute genius!! He was a great composer...I miss him SO much!

  • Hats off to whoever makes that pick-up

  • this was my stairway to heaven. after years of metal and classical, it reanimated my understanding of this particular instrument. .......

  • Pure genius! I saw him in concert after the release of this song. Pure genius!

  • I think Michael might have said that this piece played him. He was a musical conduit, which is what a great composer is. He focused himself to such a degree the music just jumped right out. The "E=MC2" of acoustic guitar. The great things are always floating out there in the ether, waiting for any of us humanoids who are focused and (worthy?) enough to bring them forth.

  • What a beautiful journey..........this is timeless.

  • This is the definitive live recording of a song that redefined acoustic guitar. He had to be in some incredable zone to pull off a performance like this. And I have to believe Will Ackerman and or Steven Miller had their hands on the final production of this. They redefined how acoustic guitar is recorded.

  • 3:00 - 3:02 is such a beautiful moment

  • such a fasinating piece, its nuber 1 on my you tube page..

each time i sit i play this and i still cant believe it..

    THATS MUSIC!

  • I must find his clothes...

  • to the whole song i can listen to it for hours but from 3:18 until 3:41 is pure heaven

  • Utter Magnificence. When I die, I would love to be greeted by this. I know I'd be in heaven then.

  • Michael was the undisputed master of alternative tuning...truly a guitarist from another realm.

  • You'd think Andy would mention Mike more

  • @MrNonoz He put a Hedges tune on his disc. Anyone who is big enough a fan of Andy will know that Michael Hedges was one of his biggest influences.

  • A master in my eyes....

    awe-inspiring talent.

  • MUSICA PROVINIENTE DEL CIELO.TU ALMA Y MUSICA NOS INSPIRA A SEGUIR TU OBRA .MICHAEL HEDGES.TE AMAMOS TODOS.....

  • omggggggggggg

  • God in Heaven has collected the best musicians, beginning with Gabriel and going on with just-folks, like Dave...and perhaps Michael; one can only hope

  • I guess I'll have to be content with enjoying this as a listener. It's already difficult enough for me trying to maintain a groove with something that's just in one rhythm!

  • In regards to the smoke...he was a "naturalist" and a "vegan." It's not a cigarette!

  • @Dinkeycreek While he didn't smoke cigarettes, he did smoke a lot of marijuana according to Don Ross, but he later gave it up.

  • @TWinterMusic - Yeah...funny thing about Vegans and health nuts...they won't smoke a cigarette, but they'll puff the crap out of some nice weed! :-)

  • Probly the most perfect solo acoustic piece ever composed and an amazing performance of it... I'd listen to this all day long

  • same here.

  • @sinnerbox iv listen to it many times in a row,i think i know what you mean...lol

  • erecay that's incense not a smoke

  • How do you know?

  • nice finger work on that git, works well for me

  • i like the smoke coming out of the headstock from the cigarette! reminds me of eric clapton.

  • Incense my man, no cigs there!

  • Oh! is that what it is?! my bad.

  • @ereccay2k22 that's incense, homey. ;-)

  • Excellent!

  • only few are ever givin the talent this guy has been givin

  • Awesome! what guitar is he playing?

  • Martin D-28.

  • Thanks for info, Johnny6666!

  • I believe that's Barbara, his Martin D-28 that he's played since he was 8 years old.

  • Nice to see somebody put this vid back up after I took it down.

  • one of the worlds most amazing musicians...

    quote from michael

"I play the guitar because it lets me dream out loud.

  • OBRA MAESTRA

  • A genius at the peak of his power. Breathtaking.

  • brilliant music, on another level.

  • Why is his guitar smoking?

  • He probably has a lit cigarette stuffed into the machine head, a frequent where-do-I-put-this-thing? resort of guitarists.

  • It's incense lol. Hedges was a hippie, but even if he didn't have incense burning his guitar would still be smoking. ^_^

  • Ah man those low Cs must have been bowel moving. Listen to it at 1.38 or 1.50. I would have easily put up with shattin my pants to see that live. Ah well. Thank god for clean boxers now!

  • Judging by his appearance this looks to be an early performance of his. It's just amazing, isn't it? I've always loved the section around 3:20 when he soars higher and higher. I would have loved to see/hear the audience reaction when he's done. This is soul music at its very best.

  • copyright on the song is 1984, on the video performance in 1986.

Gave away my VHS copy of this when I tracked down a DVD (and no, you can't have it...)

  • To steal an advertising slogan:

"It doesn't get any better than this."

  • Thanks for reposting this is my favorite version of this piece. There are no words to discribe this, it's too wonderful.

  • I could watch 2:59-3:03 on repeat.

    What an amazing musician.

  • I'm with all of you - what a brilliant gift he was and is!

  • A songbird that is forever perched on the edge of a great canyon. He bobs around on his feet staring at the vast expanse as the wind pushes him toward the edge. Each push feels like enough to send him shooting off the cliff into an aerial free-for-all, yet he forever returns to his purch to wait for the right moment. His days end with a couple more bobs on his feet.

  • Ive been waiting for this video to be reposted! I saw months ago and then it disappeared for awhile. Thank you I love this guy so much. Hes amazing and this song is incredible.

  • A true celebration of what it means to be an exceptional human being. Thank you Michael Hedges!

From the stars we came and to the stars we return...

You put a smile on the face of the Universe. :)
