"How?" is the question. If you look at the Fire Triangle, though it may not comply for Chemical fires, you need air to support a fire. By surrounding the fire with gas, the fire has no air, though gas is usually highly flammable and is known for many fires that happen millions of times daily. There are even CO2 fire extinguishers which can be highly effective on certain known types of fires.

Baking soda have another good use. To clean Thermos.

If they get all dirty and dark inside from all the coffee or tea, put a spoon full of baking soda into to it (while it's empty of course) and pour some boiling water in afterwards. Do NOT put the lit on!

Let it fizz out and flush it with clean water a few times.

It'll make the inner surface sparkling as new.
