@wcbroccoli Wasn't he prettily much of a homebody? I mean, he went home, he went to church, he went to home, he went to church. Was thatn't his basis?
It's funny that at their time, Telemann was more popular than Bach. Right as the Baroque ended and until today, Bach is considered the better composer of the two.
Telemann's music is so very filled with color. I enjoy him greatly when I tire of the sound from traditional ensembles--after a time, a string quartet seems only a string quartet regardless of what it is playing.
Telemann is the man - probably the first great autodidact in music, in that his parents really forbade him to do anything musical, yet he learned organ and a number of other instruments ON HIS OWN, practically became one of the greatest composers in his day, was able to get any job, one time held a position at 5 churches simultaneously, was interested in bringing music to the people, especially with his "collegium musicae," and may have even written a string quartet! He's the man.
And its really a shame that his music is being performed less in lieu of more "popular" antique music. But I agree, totally revolutionary, and produced incredible stylized, but nuianced, music.
One of the past exam pieces I played recently was a violin sonata movement by him (great fun!) and I tried finding some violin sonatas by him to buy off the internet (in sheet music and/or CD form) - fat chance! You can't find this stuff anywhere :( he really needs more coverage. In these supposedly enlightened times, people need to stop wasting time recording yet another version of the Four Seasons (though I am a Vivaldi devotee) and start recording such little known things by Telemann etc.!
In his day, Telemann was the most famous composer. He was friends with Handel and Bach and tried his best to make them more famous. Handel achieved this, Bach didn't (in their day, not now). It's a shame that him trying to help others backfired, and now he's not as famous as he deserves.
@vilxan CPE Bach on his father's career: "Prince Leopold of Coethen, Duke Ernst August in Weimar, and Duke Christian in Weissenfels particularly loved him, and rewarded him appropriately. In addition, he was particularly honored in Berlin and Dresden. But in general he did not have the most brilliant good fortune, BECAUSE HE DID NOT DO WHAT IT REQUIRES, NAMELY, ROAM THE WORLD OVER. Yet by connoisseurs and lovers of the art he was sufficiently honored."
A Wonderful Telemann Piece Played in a Lovely Setting by Excellent Instrumentalists...What a Treat! Each Performer's Part can be Distinctly Heard so Congratulations are in order for the Sound Quality of the Recording...Thanx 4 including the Lute Part - It adds Much to the Baroque-esque Setting & Sound. Best Wishes 2U All!
I added it to my favorites. Lovely and elegant. You should add post this as a video response to one of my Telemann videos so my viewers can find this video, too.
Wow, I love this piece. I play recorder and flute in a Baroque group. You don't happen to know the TWV catalogue number? This is a really crisp performance. Great playing all round. :)
How is this a trio sonata? Though it was two instruments and a basso continuo...

I personally think that out of the Great Baroque Composers, Telemann had the greatest sense of humour and the most creativety.
