  • Am I the only one that recognizes the relationship between this technology and what we saw in Blade Runner? He was able to make changes to the image that would require not just a picture but more like capturing all the light data in an area. This isn't as impressive but it's a step in the right direction. If I am the first to notice this... then... ha ha ha I'm smarter than you.

  • How many mega pixels? Or are mega pixels irrelevant in this thing?

  • @GetSqueaky Irrelevant.

  • @GetSqueaky it's 2 or 3 i've heard,

most of mpxl are used to store the depth.

It's made for 'electronic use' of picture, aka .. facebooking them.

  • They need to put this tech in all digital cameras.

  • Why do I need to focus after the fact to get the dinosaur in picture? I can do that in camera already.

  • hardware changes needed:

    1) accept memory cards, instead of only having 8GB internal memory

    2) accept changeable batteries. ALL photo cameras do

    3) waterproof and rugged (like Olympus and Nikon and Sony do) would be AWESOME! imagine an underwater photo of fish, some close, some far, with this multifocus!

with all this included, I would buy it NOW

  • How many megapixels?

  • WHAT'S THAT SOUND?!?!?!?!?!??!

  • WHAT THE FREAKIN MAGAPIXELS???????????

  • PLEASE NO!

  • if only it can capture more than 1.2 Megapixel! o_0

  • Overpriced bad shit.

  • @Jebusjoose $399 is cheap for cameras anyways.

  • @Freepepsi42

Cheap for cameras, not for a piece of shit like that. You can buy a good film body for $400, instead of this crap.

  • @Jebusjoose why film? You will be wasting more money with a FM10. Your paying for the tech. My D3s cost me $5000. And my last lens cost more then this camera.

  • @Jebusjoose well i inherited the camera from my now dead uncle. But just got the 70-200mm f2.8 $3000. The cheapest body would cost you close to $400.

  • @Freepepsi42

If you really did shoot pro, you would know where I'm coming from. You probably use your dead uncle's D3s to hammer nails, because all you're doing is throwing around numbers and saying nothing.

  • @Jebusjoose i don't shoot pro. He knew i've always been interested in photography so when he passed, he gave me the camera. It's a gift, i'm far from pro, but i just kept the camera for when i'm at that level. I bought the 70-200mm with the money i earned working at McDonalds. It's a good all around lens that fits my shooting needs. It a lens every photography pro or not should have if they have the option to do so. Plus the D3000 is $499 at B&H. and P5100 sells for around that price.

  • Dumbed down shit.

  • amazing.............!

  • yeah, good leap in technology, but 400 bucks to be able to focus later? mmm, smells like fail

  • @CT27NX I think this is a revolution.

  • For now it's a 1MP camera which really doesn't bode well for the tech. Once they're able to resize it and increase the the MP on it, there's no doubt this will revolutionize the camera industry both on regular cameras and smartphones alike. Give it a couple of years

  • @ tehDementedGamer

I wasn't suggesting you use it instead of a DSLR. I was just trying to find a solution to the problem you mentioned...

  • @Kaybo93 Ah, I see. Like I had said in another post. If you couple this technology with software and put it in smartphones, Lytro will literally own the market. On average, most people just post their photos directly online from their phones anyway, this would improve the ease of use and the quality without actually needing an additional program or app on the phone.

  • @ tehDementedGamer

Maybe just focus it where you'd like, then export it to use with CS5, Aperture, etc....

  • @Kaybo93 Why would I use this technology over DSLRs or Medium format? The quality is not even close, the feature set isn't there, and it really doesn't offer the pro photographer anything they can't already do. It's a useless gimmick in that space. Now, that said, my mom would love it.

  • ...but NOTHING beats Canon!

  • @MrNiels202002 I think you're referring to.. NOTHING beats Nikkon!

Answer. 99% studio photographers uses NIKKON because of patented CREATIVE LIGHTING TECHNOLOGY.

  • finally no more fat women for review

  • $399 100 bucks more and I can buy another iPad wtf

  • what a load of useless crap

  • ....with DSLR you can choose to make panning-bulb for night and low shutter speed for fireworks etc. ,video in 24P film look.....and muchhhhhhhh muchhhhhh more with bigger sensor and lense and with external flashes, microphones etc. THIS tecknology is here to replace mobile phones cameras and some of the compacts not the DSLRS!!!!

  • This is too gimmicky to be a stand alone product.

  • No video?

  • @uliseto The file size would be astronomical...

  • I want it, how much?

  • @pufixas $400

  • Canon or Nikon will use the same technology soon, and i'll end up stuck with this thing. I will pass, and wait.

  • I have no idea about one thing, you say select a subject you want to focus what if i want to focus on both subject as i have try on the website it only allows me to focuse on one subject so is there someting i am missing or there is a special way to select both ?

  • How many mage pixels is it?

Would a picture remain clear if it were blow up to be a desktop?

  • @Saml3838 I think it's like 1.2mp or something

  • This guy definitely needs to pick up esquire or details magazine and a how-to dress bootcamp.

    Couldnt help it.

  • I loved this technology. Its software dependent though but still loved it. Nokia should launch this with their N series phones. :)

  • Cool!

  • I would wait until the 4th iteration and then consider it....

  • it like, catches light at ZERO time. Einstein would be proud.

  • sarah from Chuck uses this in one episode

  • The problem with this technology in it's current state is that it is proprietary. You can only view photos and change the focus in the software it comes with- this hinders the product a great deal in my eyes. Might be cool for the consumer market, maybe built into phones, but this has absolutely no place in the pro market.

  • @tehDementedGamer so you're saying that the photos you currently take are never transfered to a pc or mac .....they go directly from your camera to the internet and to your albums ?! ....this software is just like a photo managing app that sorts and organisez your shots

  • @AxLstyle That's not what I'm saying at all,and I am not bashing this camera.I was simply pointing out it's shortcoming.I was saying that, if you take this technology, coupled with software, and integrate it into phones(which are the future of the point and shoot market)these could become much more than a gimmick-this tech could become an industry standard. In fact, reports released today state the Steve Jobs was considering this technology for future iPhone models.Don't freak out when this happens.

  • @tehDementedGamer I don't think the Lytro technology in this state is for pro users. It's for mainstream users, who takes pictures randomly, without any pro knowledge. Btw. it captures only 2MP pictures, so this is for fun, not for pro users. It's for sharing moments, not for sharing high quality art photos.

  • @Vodny All true, which is why I feel it's perfect for the camera phone market.

  • @tehDementedGamer yes make it open source! and also make an open source video format to do the same thing with videos!

  • @cipnrkorvo And increase the resolution to something that people can actually do something with. And the image quality is horrendous. This thing is equivalent to those ultra-cheap $60-$100 point and shoot cameras that you get on QVC and hsn.

  • @tehDementedGamer

I don't think it claims to be for the pro market...I don't think anyone would think that in the first place.

  • @skulleton True. This was linked on a pro photog forum (which is why I had said that) where some were hailing it as a SLR destroyer in the making.

  • @tehDementedGamer

SLR destroyer, eh. Maybe 10 years from now, who knows. For now its just a toy.

  • well well well... try shooting night and we talk l8r lytro :) i call it a dead end

  • no video recording?

  • It's an awesome concept. It's definitely something that will grow in the market.

  • So your buying a $400 point and shoot. This will never replace a DSLR. The sensor is too small, your paying $400 to replace pressing halfway down on the shutter release.

  • its a gr8 stuff! i guess the photographers would be in recession soon^^^

  • @zen99g Never. The ergonomics are retarded. How does it do in low light?

  • @giklab look brotha you're right BUT i said the idea is unique & gr8. time2time it would be helpful & so to many.say, in a rush you took a pic went off focus which can be fixed later. i also think if they can improve with stills & do it with videos then it would be superb!

  • @zen99g The idea IS great but there are no maual controls or anything, I think they wanted to make an "Apple" feel, when you just push a button and everything is done for you. No creativity at all in the pics. The constant f2 is a win tho.

  • @giklab did you watch the video? You control everything after the photo is taken--it's the ultimate manual control.

  • i was going to order this but then i saw it does not do video and i was like DAMN

  • This camera would've come in handy when I took an arrow to the knee!

  • lens + ipod nano= lytro camera

  • can you shoot a photo with depth that has everything in focus? this camera seems magic. i feel like it could do that with an f2 lens, and i can't see how it could satisfy with only shooting blurry backgrounds

  • it will change the world if it actually work. photographer wont be cool anymore

and im pretty sure this new technology will in every every overpriced gadget brand

  • This Is Pretty much the same technology the iphone has Plus the pictures come out as a square!! lol i guess you really have no choice if you want to do landscape or profile. Another thing, for $400 one can buy a canon xti or xs which is like like 7x bettter than this all im saying is i wouldnt doubt it if in a couple of months these cameras would be sold at your local pharmacy for $80

  • @zavalation831 You missed the entire 'focusing' part didn't you?

  • @collegehurnor really? thats what cought your attention? wow lol I mean whos gonna spend $400 on a bad camera just cuz theyre too lazy to manually focus their frame And like i said, the Iphone has that technolgy with only difference that the Iphone has higher resolution and the profile or landscape frame option. yes it doesnt allow you to change whats focused after you took the photo but it doesnt matter cuz everyone should already know what part of they want focused even b4 they take the photo.

  • @zavalation831 I meant the fact that it was a light field camera.

  • @collegehurnor Yeah its a light field camera what with that? you know the only messes with depth of field and the ammount of light each object gets. What if you want to play with the shutter speed? You cant, it doesnt give you that option. what if you want to take a picture at night? you cant, it doesnt have a flash nor a hole to screw in a tripod so what you will get is a very distorted picture with a bunch of static. I have way more stuff on this camera but i have no more characters to explain

  • @zavalation831 You didn't watch the video did you? Either that or you didn't understand it. It's NOT the same tech as an iPhone, it records the light and the angle of the light which allows you to change focus AFTER you take the photo. No other camera can do this, it's completely new to the consumer market.

  • So awesome!!

  • This would be awesome on a phone

  • It looks too effeminate methinks.

  • I know this is early, but what is the image quality like? How much noise is there? Is there lens distortion? What level user (pro, consumer, soccer parent, etc) will replace their camera with the Lytro? What options are there for creative lighting (directional, wrapping, soft, hard, etc) and connecting to studio strobes?

  • @efransophoto it's a consumer level device, but it's a great start. Think of it as proof of concept for the future. This is just the first version with professional versions to come. But the real trick to this thing is to move the controls to software for maximum flexibility after the photo is taken rather than making all your decisions when you snap the shutter.

  • I shiver with the revolution of this device. Beyond excited.

  • they should fire the guy responsible for this camera design... ugly crap.

  • Looks like an interesting product for those that would like to get a little more Kreative outside of using a traditional DSLR. I like products that allow me to take quality and kreative images at random events and places without having to always lug around a huge camera. I don't think the price point justifies its abilities. Anyone know what the MP's are on this?

  • dear santa...

  • Two words

    First Generation

Everyone who hates this product should relax as it will only get better

  • THIS 'CAMERA' IS ABSOLUTE RUBBISH. RESOLUTION IS NON-EXISTANT, AND THE SO-CALLED 'SOFTWARE' RUNS ONLY ON THE WORST-POSSIBLE PLATFORM: APPLE.

DNON'T WASTE MONEY ON IT: I'VE RETURNED MINE AS NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE.

  • @leotardgirlbunny of course it rubbish-now. Because its a new attempt to use a new technology. Once they perfect it this technology could be everywhere

  • Comment removed

  • shame on them who buy this stuff....little,unhandy stuff with only 1 good thing.

its cool to take photos if you are unable to get sharp shots...but the rest iss bad...

    1,unhandy

    2,no control on light

3, no control on shuttertime(hobbyphotographer will hate it)

4, it has only a usb adapter, which means if your power source dosnt work anymore you have to sent it back

5, if you want to upload your pictures to the internet you HAVE TO upload it first to the site of the producer, so they are cought!

  • @MavrakisPortraits and thats not all!!!

  • @MavrakisPortraits 1) this is a Developer Preview, it is more than likely not representative of the final product

    2) thats the point, a light field camera captures ALL the different type of lighting in an area. and i would assume the software allows you to adjust it

    3) Shutter is instant. so it would be good for stop motion/macro/sports and other types of photography

    4) it more than likely will charge via USB as well as a charger unit.

    5) probably not. you more than likely upload it wherever

  • maybe I'm missing the point but why would you want to select the focal point in post-production?

  • @barhook why wouldn't you want to?

  • one day we're gonna be like... HEY GUYS remember those days when we had to focus?!

  • Don't really care for it. Will wait until they license it out to pro level DSLR's. Either built into the body of new models or a new lense line for Canon/Nikon.

  • @LatinLegacyNY That's the point. This technology is NOT DSLR. The two technologies have nothing in common.

I hear your point, though. It needs to be bigger (to give it the mass required for stability) and have more funcitonality in terms of zoom, etc, before it is adopted en masse by the professional community.

    Still promising, though,

  • It's called a plenoptic camera, they are definitely not new, and that is not the first. but, it is certainly the first at that price point.

  • waowwee you dont need to focus, but looks like it cant exposure compensate though

  • OUCH MY EARS ARE RINGING!

  • cool toy. Might not want one or maybe I would if they were cheaper. It proves the technology is possible though so probably in the future it can be built into cameras or dslr lenses which is exciting because it could have a ton of other applications changing the way pictures are taken. Cool. looked on their website only seems to work on a mac at the moment....

  • its lens is amazing f2 all the way from 35mm to 280mm.

  • WTF? a software that let's you choose a focal point at post processing? insane technology! maybe sometime or in the near future, DSLRs would adapt to this kind of technology, if the little rectangle box can do it, so can they

  • Insane! Can't wait until you can take video with something like this!

  • Impressed. Also about the price - it does not seem a lot for that kind of technology. :)

  • Time for canon to put that tech into a L " ultimate " Lens.

  • lol the price is really not bad for a new technology like this... Only problem I have so far with it is that the pics are just to low res for today standards. I might be wrong but judging from the pictures on their website the backgound doesnt get quite as sharp as the foreground. Now we need true HDR capture and someday full spectral capture XD... then we can have a do it all one button camera. say bye bye menus and setting jihaw! ...hmm still we need to change the shutter speed for motionblur

  • @cromrke there we go it's a $400 point and shoot. Maybe worse i can change the shutter speed on mine.

  • Nah....I'll stick to my Nikon D5x-02.34 Optica Supreme. : ))

  • Just wish the design of the camera wasn't so dumb.

  • In my few years of hobby photography, I've never wanted to change focus. It's great that there are innovative people and everything, but I'd never buy a camera for $400 that gives me 22Mb images with 1 megapixel resolution (=good for postcard-size photos and facebook, nothing else). The ability to change focus just sounds like a solution to a problem that I've never heard anyone have...

  • @lioneyes90 I think one of the biggest advantages is the speed. This can take photos effectively instantly where a conventional camera would have to spend time focusing. Also there are some situations where conventional cameras struggle to focus, low light is one and I personally find that trying to take photos to birds in flight causes is difficult for focusing. Unfortunately this camera doesn't produce good enough photos to produce benefit over using a tiny aperture on a conventional camera.

  • @lioneyes90

first of all - you can make 3D pics, which is impossible with your regular cam.

2 - you just take a pic and then adjust what you want to focus on, you can play with the pics however and whenever you want. first digital cams were also expensive, with only a small resolution, but hey, this is the first one and there are more and better to come. i do believe that this is the future of photography. you are right, that for professional and hobby photographers it is of no use. yet :)

  • High pitched noise made me dislike.

  • seems kitchy and kinda crap really

  • 2012, here i come. This camera looks amazing, the tech inside is +1

  • that technology seems to have potential

but the camera isnt that appealing

  • @NapanTR You mean the design? I have to disagree, I like it! :)

  • it is cool, but the quality of the picture is kinda cheap

  • i think ... fixfocus + kinect + simple mask blur = variable depth of field ???

  • So I make a photo and everything on it is blurred except one thing that is focused and I can play with focusing to different things one thing at a time. That may be great for artistic impression but I prefer my photos focused on all things at once.

  • wtf theres no noise ass holes!

  • @deadlycheezcake Are you death?

  • so....can you eat it?

  • @booboowilson10101 to answer that we first have to answer this; will it blend?

  • Two things that make this camera not appeal to me:

Lame rectangular prism design (A cylindrical design with 16:9 side flip-screen and rear controls would have been ideal, for the sake of ergonomics and aesthetics both)

"HD-quality interactive, living pictures" This tells me one thing. . . 2 Megapixels. Unless some engineer can tell us how well "11 Megarays" of data will interpolate into the more familiar megapixel unit, and at what sharpness, 1920x1080 is the measurement I'm estimating.

  • Why is the aspect ratio square?

  • @mikelae19 So you don't need to spend additional money on a vertical grip.

  • that's crazy awesome cam and not to expansive for new tech.

  • cool

  • 1. No external storage options

    2. 16gb only in red, and I want a 16gb blue one...

    3. I see this technology dropping in price, as technology normally does. When it does, they will probably make a cheaper, better V2... Until then, I'm gonna get a Nikon

  • damn, you ruined my ears! cant get this sound out of my head!

  • EAAAAAAAARSSSSSSSSSS

  • @riteasrain man in with century do you live in ? :P

  • I like the camera, but it's a bit expensive. I accept it's a new technology which makes it costlier but still 499$ for 16GB is out of my list....😞

  • AHHHHHHHHHHHHH My ears!!!

CNET I'm suing you! I'm usin in ear headphones!!!

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • my phone can take 12.1 megapixel pictures and video, make calls, has GPS, games, music storage, radio, take notes, has alarm, calender, add software, 16 gb storage space. But no, it can't blend. why do i need this thing.

  • @dasautomega The N8 is a camera first and a Phone second, I have one too, and I really tried to make it my daily device. I moved to a WP7 device and the only thing i missed was the camera. The N8 still gets broken out when I travel though

  • wtf this sound toooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon

  • "You'll plug it in your PC or Mac". Uh uh. Right now the software is Mac only.

  • @DvT093 Most PC's don't have the ram to operate it.

  • This is one of the biggest innovations in camera technology in a looong time. I hope somebody will buy the technology behind this and stick it into a pro camera.

  • 0:47 why "8 ex focus"??? Why not 8 times? Isn't that what "x" means? Fool. I hate the way the English language is turning to crap.

  • important questions: image size?? file format??

  • hmm...cost too much >_<"

  • that sound... i feel like a dog :] me gusta

  • This guy is such a hottie.

  • @alisresume - You have absolutely no clue how this camera works. Google it and get a clue.

  • Comment removed

  • @alisresume : you are wrong. "google it" ;)

  • @alisresume hahahahahahahahaha

  • When I watch this video... I hear something... it calls for me....

  • The White Noise,It Speaks To Me

  • If you really think about it, they're trying to sell this not to us consumers, but to camera companies like Nikon and Canon. They made the tech, and threw it in a crappy designed form factor (I think we all agree here) and is selling it to us at a premium. If they were really in the mrkt of making cams, they would not make such a crappy design.

This is just to show the camera makers that there is a market for it. Lytro then will sit back and licence the tech it to Canon/Sony.

  • the product itself is not revolutionary but the concept definitely is. In the future, most cameras will probably have this implemented in them and the need to focus will be non existent. I'm an slr filmmaker and if this ever is implemented into that kind of technology, it will literally make ease of use soar and ability to create topnotch footage will increase exponentially.

  • 8 GB shit block for $399. hahaha, i'm no idiot.

  • That's fucking stupid, the 16GB model is the same price as my Canon 600D (DSLR) where you can do soooo much more.

  • I want one of those so I can capture ghost in my place; I could also use it to take picture of the ugly people i work with HA

  • OMG I WANT I WANT I WANT!!!

  • its like a 70's fad tht will jus fade. not worth the money.

  • damn technology these days are amazing

  • But will it blend?

  • A new type of camera for hipsters.

  • Why pay 400 $ for this cam now? Just wait 6 months or year and it'll be at least two times cheaper...
