The packing peanuts seems like fun plus I can get an infinite amount for free since my roommate works for UPS. The problem is, my ferret seems to want to eat anything with a chewy texture no matter how deadly this may be to him. I just got him.

These are biodegradable STARCH packing peanuts. I wouldn't *feed* them to a ferret, but if they take a nibble, it won't hurt them.

@AnimalGirl328 83 is too warm, yes. Ferrets are cold weather animals. It would be much better if you can get them under 80. A fan is helpful. You can also put some ice packs in towels and put them in the cage or give them a bowl of water with some ice in it. I'd google "cooling ferrets" or call your vet for more/better ideas.

@SmallWaldo Ok here is my idea. I am thinking of keeping them in my living room its 80F and then putting a fan in the livingroom but not right on them. Then it should be at 78F or lower. (The fan is a spacial $190 fan that cleans the air and cools it, instead of just blowing air). Would this work? and what temp do you keep your ferrets at? Thanks.

@AnimalGirl328 That sounds pretty good. Keep an eye on them for lethargy - a ferret that seems limp or inactive when it's awake is not a well ferret. In Chicago I keep my weasels around 75 when it gets hot, using the central air. In the evenings around here, most of the time, I can open the windows and use fans. But like I said, the ferrets can let you know if they aren't doing well. If they don't want to play or lay around without actually being asleep, something's wrong.

@AnimalGirl328 I'll tell you what I tell people at the ferret shelter I work at - read the book "Ferrets for Dummies" by Kim Schilling from cover to cover. Well, you can skip the chapter on breeding if you don't plan on doing that - I did. ;) But the rest of it is *really* valuable information. You can get used copies on Amazon for about $8.00. It's a fantastic resource.

@fredjhenzel There is a seller on ebay who sells these things but they are made especially for ferrets. If they get wet, they just fall apart. I am planning to buy a pack for my ferrets. I think he charges $20 plus free shipping. My only concern is the mess they will make.

i have 4 questions... my parents won't let me get a ferret b/c they think they smell... are they that bad? is cleaning their cage an everyday job? and other than the cost of the ferrt(s) themselves, are they expensive? and last, if i got a ferret would it need another one to keep it company?

Smell: I don't think it's bad and got used to it quickly. I can't really smell it anymore. But I remember at first it had a unique smell that (too me) didn't smell as bad as a dog, it just sticks to things easier. I guess it's an opinion thing.

Cage: You definitely have to clean the poop in the cage at least once a day. And wash the bedding at least one a week. If you don't wash the bedding much then it will smell worse.

cost: From a pet store or something they are about 100$ each, and the cage is like 70-120$. I got mine secondhand and it was much cheaper. Look for classified ads. The lowest I've seen was free-25$..

And I don't think you need another to keep it company as long as you give it a lot of attention. I've never had just one so I wouldn't know.. but it would probably be fine.

Actually they are probably bio-degradable packing peanuts made especially for ferrets. When the peanuts touch water or saliva it desenegrates into harmlessness. I have some for my ferrets. You don't have to worry about them suufocating they are very light and airy and easy to breathe in, i have tested them.

I don't know about the poster, but when we let our ferrets play in something like packing peanuts (which is great fun). It is supervised play. That way if we see them stealing one, we just steal it back before they can stash it away.
