  • From a HUGE Marillion fan to all Dream Theater fans who like Marillion as well:

Does anyone know that Marillion just released an incredible DVD called "Out Of Season", and it has been called by many influencial music critics "The best live DVD ever released by a band"?

I am going to buy it, and I strongly suggest it to all of you as well.

Steve Hogarth is my favorite singer by far, and I cannot wait to see him in it!

  • Yea they played this with Surrounded, at the end of Surrounded they play the solo fo Mother by Pink FLoyd and then a small part of Sugar Mice. Then they end with Surrounded :)

  • It should be added that just after they fired Dominici, Marillion asked DT to open for them in 1989, so Dominici was invited back for that one show. That was a big show and Marillion (or at least their managing staff) knew that they were good. So just goes to show that bigger bands can lift up young bands to new heights, and when they do, it's worth it!

  • that is the solo of mother of pink floyd!!!

  • Well.. Marillion's music is Floyd-esk.. Sort of Floyd meets early Genesis... To me this is more Satrianni sounding... Gilmore is no Satrianni, but he did make each note count.. I see how this sounds a little bit like Mother do you think... It is... We all know that.. Hard to copy-write two chords (G and C alternations) with a Gmajor melody on top...

    Good ear

  • DT playing Marillion. Good to hear. The cycle of music and her influences always rolling......

Marillion plays Genesis, Mike Oldfield in the past, now many bandas are playing Marillion..is a natural and continuous process of good music. The band that plays good music often listen good music as influences...

Great! In eightes, Marillion plays with Iron Maiden, two songs.

  • A nice and eloquent touch with your comment in saying "the cycle of music and HER influences". It's kind of like how long ago a band of men referred to their ship or aircraft as "She".

  • @riproar11 LOL I am sure he typed that without even knowing what the heck you're talking about. He wasn't eloquent; judging by his comment, his English was barely understandable.

He has a Portuguese name, and in Portuguese, the term music is referred to in a female form ("SHE"), just like it is in German, Italian, French and Spanish.

English, I believe, is the only western language where things (and animals sometimes) are referred to with "IT".

  • Seriously guys, Dream Theater have nothing but the utmost respect for Marillion. Petrucci, Myung, and Portnoy grew up listening to Marillion for god's sake.

Your opinion on their cover aside, they're not trying to co-opt another band's song; they're paying tribute to a band that they greatly and deeply admire. It's an homage. Whether you think it's good or bad doesn't matter because they're just paying their respects. Marillion are friends and fans of Dream Theater as well.

  • I personally agree with you, they respect Marillion (even when the Petrucci solo are feelingless).

  • @Ametrida I too agree on Petrucci's solos.

But, it didn't use to be that way. Images & Words was their best album by far, and back then, his solos had feeling, as opposed to just being mere displays of sheer speed.

Marillion is my favorite band by far, and I wouldn't ever compare Petrucci with Steve Rothery.

  • Marillion and DT used to be my favorite bands, but then from Train Of Thought DT started to deliberately eliminate anything mellow and inspirational, and became caged in the "we play metal and anything that isn't metal is gay!" cage, and I started to lose respect for them ever since.

That said, Images & Words will always remain one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time! It's up there with Seasons end, Holidays In Eden from Marillion and Trick Of A Tail and Wind & Wuthering from Genesis.

  • @vampiroangelico Hmmm listen to BC&SL, thats DTs new album, it might change what you think about them. Sure A Nightmare to remember is metal but it kicks ass. If you're looking for mellow listen to The Count of Tuscany and Wither. You'll like those :)

  • @vbdude006 LOL this is actually hilarious!

I bought the album as soon as it came out, and wouldn't you know, Wither and Count Of Tuscany ARE BY FAR my favorite songs in that album!

Your comment was spot on! You nailed it!

  • @vampiroangelico Hahaha good to know :) I think DT is going to go back toits mellow-er roots, in the next album or two. There will of course be a couple of "harder" songs. I'm still waiting on the next Metropolis Pt 1, The Count of Tuscany came pretty close on the "epicness" scale haha I love the violin parts at the end

  • @vbdude006 I honestly think the problem, from "train of thought", was that Petrucci & Portnoy tried much too hard to sound like a more technical version of Pantera, and I didn't like that AT ALL. The reason why Images & Words was my favorite album is the incredible variety of stuff in it, and how creative it was, without being stuck in the metal genre just to please the headbanger fans, which dont understand real music anyway. I hope you're right about their future CDs.

  • @vampiroangelico

Hmm i agree to a certian extent, but only because I like every DT album haha but I guess its personal preference really. Although I do agree that their earlier albums like IAW and Awake where better than their newer ones

  • @vbdude006 Have you ever considered the fact that they're better albums because they had much more variety, as far as music creativity, and because they actually allowed James Labrie (one of the most talented singers the world has ever seen) to have more influence during composition, back in their earlier period?

    Just a thought....

  • @vampiroangelico Yeah, the albums are more varied, but I don't think LaBrie had much of an effect on this, simply because JP and MP write the majority of the songs(lyric-wise)

  • @vbdude006 Yes I know they do, but LaBrie a couple of years ago came up with a great solo album, which blows away anything DT did since and included "train of thought", which demonstrated he has more creative and interesting ideas than John "Dimebag" Petrucci & Mike "VinniePaul" Portnoy.

  • What a compliment, such great music. Marillion is/was such a great band.Torn apart by egos and selfishness. Good to see DT paying tribute!!!

  • Marillion's Sugar Mice, such an amazing song. Few people know that Dream Theater are great fans of Marillion, and "Images and Words" is dedicated to the Marillion's ballads

  • Piękna aranżacja, piękne wykonanie.

    Jak ze snu!!!

  • i saw dream theater a week ago too, but in valencia venezuela, they also played "sugar-mother-surrounded mix". three of my favourite bands in a same song... pink floyd marillion and dt.

  • a little detail on the side. marillion isn't prog-metal... or maybe not even prog (to commons peoples standards) anymore. DT and marillion mentioned in the same sentence make not much sense for me :) better to compare, if that is to be done, with bands such as porcupine tree (their pop-era), radiohead and so on.

  • marillion is a neoprog rock band... Sometimes it's ridicoulous that metal fans don't understand that their idols like other music beside metal, and they are really influenced by classic rock bands... Lack of music culture, always...

  • I think we should be critics with the bad music, like Punk, reggaeton, syntethic pop,and others, not with this ARTISTS.

There too much respect between Dream Theater and Marillion. They played "Easter" together once (with Steve Rothery and Hogarth).

  • I am a marillion, pink floyd and dream theater fan, and i saw dream theater played "sugar-mother-surrounded mix" in buenos aires two days ago, and is incredible the solo of Petrucci. The sound here is horrible (youtube videos), but live is fantastic and the pérformance of Petrucci in Buenos Aires was too too better than this.

Dream Theater is one of the best progressive rock-metal groups today. Even Marillion isnt so good TODAY than dream theater.

  • dejen d robarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, arruinaron un temon d marillion

  • tough crowd

  • i'm a marillion's fan and find this cover horrible. don't play with marillion's music !! haha

  • O CACA!

  • I agree with you 100%. I am one of Marillion's biggest fans especially from the fish phase and DT have butchered this song for me :(

  • oh dear. his singing is terrible and the solo before 'Mother' was boring wanky crap. They just completely murdered and gang raped a fantastic song. Shame really.

  • Hahahaha Petrucci played Pink Floyd's Mother solo! very good move, as Sugar Mice is a total ripoff from this song, although a brilliant one and i really love the live versions like on gazza ladra

  • its not a ripoff of mother, its totally different jerk!!!!!

  • Hmmm that was murder and shit.

  • I bet my band can beat up your band!

  • terrible! how fish would laugh!

  • I'd desert my kid too if he sang like that

  • Wow, this is just sad, why do they waste people's time doing this?

They even randomly played a Pink floyd solo.

  • lmfao, this is terrible! I used to be a big DT fan, but they don't hold a candle to Marillion; Fish era or otherwise. Petrucci can't play emotionally, at least not here, and LaBrie captures absolutely zero of Fish's intents with the lyrics. It sounds more like HE is the one taking the raincheck! He should be -ashamed-!

    Damn LaBrie.

  • They should be arrested on the spot. They fucked up beyond recognition a masterpiece.

  • And subjected to torture, too!!! Vomit!. WTF is this? How to ruin a song in under 5 minutes?

  • Respectfully, I disagree. The song was a nice showcase of John Petrucci's talents, though I do think James LaBrie was a little heavy-handed in his delivery of the "Daddy took a raincheck" lyric. And I thought it was a nice transition into the end of "Surrounded."

  • this was my first DT gig, and I must say it was the most fantastic experience musically of my life! Rock on John P!

  • Cool! Same here dude! It was awesome! I'll be at Manchester in October for definate! JP did indeed rock and MP is just a machine!!

  • Toremj, your the tool mate you havent got a fuckin clue no singer has the range of LaBrie, now fuck off and listen to tool you ass wipe

  • I disagree; Peter Hammill would wipe the floor with LaBrie.

  • To TOREMJ, yeah, James Maynard Keenan is an awesome singer, but he really wouldn't fit Dream Theaters style.

Tool and Dream Theater are very different, so they need different singers for different jobs.

Anyway the fact of the matter is; DT > TOOL.

Because at least it doesn't take Dream Theater like 5 years to write albums. Especially ones that are full of stupid filler tracks.

    ALTHOUGH, I LIKE THEM BOTH.

    & I'm in this video. x

  • you should join my group of everyone that went to the gig.

  • How good was the atmosphere when this was being played?! What a set!!

  • No I wish somebody more like Tool's vocalist for example. That Iron Maiden castrate voice is so 80s.

  • so 80's?

is that why they've been this successful for 20 years?

grow up and start listening to some real music

  • My dog, why dont they ditch that singer

  • Beause he's fucking awesome, that's why! Can you hit those notes? I guess you want a vocalist that sounds like he's dribbling, like slipknot or any of those other stupid death grungecore hard fuck rank shit bollocks steel grind pissbore metal bands have.

  • Ha! That's my back infront the whole time.

I'm wearing that white shirt, with the red stripes although you can't really make that out with the quality of the video!

Fucking ace night, really enjoyed it!

    - Although, i'm going to want this video sent to me, otherwise I will sue you ...

    :D x

  • awesome night! petrucci is fucking massive nowadays!

and the gig was beyond my expectations all round!
