People have things the wrong way round. Before shows like this most British people would only think of geisha, businessmen and tea ceremonies in regards to Japan. Japanorama offered something new to challenge the traditional notions embedded in peoples minds. This super modern Tokyo based culture may be unusual to Japan as a whole but it's interesting & different thus the subject of a good TV show. People know traditional Japan already like people know royalty + tea when thinking of Britain.
Battle Royale sure is great. All the versions, film, book, manga, awsome. I never read books but I just had to read it and it was just excellent. I recommend all of the versions to anyone.
And to make it clear, for some reason people don't get how old the students on Battle Royale are, well, they were on junior high on 9th grade, 15 years old.
I do know JR is intensely interested in Japan and I've heard quite a few times he loves it. But every time I see this sort of documentary about it, I get to be felt that western countries, of course in this case it's the UK want Japan to be a bizarre country. I totally don't get why they always exaggerate and focus on a minor aspect of the culture? Well, in case it could be called culture. Is it just because that is a telly show?
it was a wrong idea that they recited the marriage vows in Japanese. i thought my ears started bleeding. just kidding. nice episode. hayao miyazaki and battle royale, two of my favorites.
Ugh, I'm so freaking jealous I can't stand it.... I wanna get married in a cute Kimono at Puroland by a talking tree while Hello Kitty dances at my wedding. Life can be cruel.....
I... really wouldn't want to get married if I wasn't pronoucing my vows right... I think I wouldn't be able to make the words come out. Hello kitty land!!!!! I wanna go!!!!!
When this TV program was made Spirited Away wasn't already distributed by Disney so it was unknown in the US until a year later when it won that Oscar, this was made a year before it was even distributed in the US.
The interview with Miyazaki was cringe worthy, but Ross seemed so in awe and respectful! I loved that. Though I think the first comment that he was the 'japanese disney' pissed him off for the rest of the interview XD
*squeals* i absolutly for one love battle royale! well the first one atleast i was rather disapointed as a fan with the second and i absolutly love the manga as well!
I don't know, this program seems to take a "hey look! Isn't Japan weird!?!" perspective rather then taking a genuine introspective on their culture. The hello kitty bit for example taught us nothing other then "whoa get a load of this crazy stuff". If the Japanese were to do a show on us, wouldn't you rather it not be one where we are all in clown suits?
@vandalking78 which show do you think would get more views? "learn about japanese culture" or "check out those crazy japanese"?... it's television after all, and they are just showing the most different things they have over there.
@vandalking78 Uh, Jonathan Ross (Wossy) speaks Japanese and also is quite well versed in things Japanese. He is in no way, shape, or form, being offensive about Japan. He is witty, not xenophobic. Get real lives people!
@Kamisamadesu1 He's done right by me doin docs like these (some episodes he is a bit too harsh but we know what to expect when we (who are familar with his style) know he's gonna be on it, lol! Missed loads of original screenin so well chuffed to catch up ;-)
@vandalking78 Hello Kitty has been a huge contributor to the Japanese infrastructure over the years during its peak. Do I think its silly? No, There are plenty of documentary's about Japan's culture and history so why not look into the other side of things for a change. Loosen up.
@vandalking78 i think it's more of an exhibition of the japanese youth's peculiar interest in new and odd things. plus this episode is about what appeals to japanese youth and how colorful their culture is. this show is more an exhibition of japan's pop culture media rather than their cultural values.so this show does what it's meant to in an entertaining way, it shows japanese pop culture and how unique and interesting the modern japanese society is without diving into complex cultural values.
@vandalking78 That's the point of the show. There are plenty of documentaries on Japanese culture - this is more about its entertainment industry and pop culture.
Battle Royal looks great i will bet you thta if you get the kids from "high School Musical" and get them to start shooting each other with some high tech weapons would be even better!
You know, it's not hard to pronounce Japanese words. As someone who has been learning the language for 4 years now, it's especially annoying.
And yes, I do cringe when I hear bad engrish. All the time. I was never pissed with them. I was just cringing. Jonathon Ross mispronounces everything. Especially "Oyasuminasai" He says it like "oyasumnisai" Ick.
I just love Spirited Away... (as well as the other Miyazaki works anyway :P ) and Battle Royale is incredible, I just rented it again las week. ^__^ Bad thing is BR2 wasn't all that great movie.
Struggling to get original Battle Royale in UK :-( 2nd one wasnt as gripping for me but definitely need to catch up on my anime in 2012!

I imagine Jonathan Ross' speech impedement combined with a cockney accent doesn't help his pronounciation.
OnceUponAMidnight 4 years ago 3
Yeah, like when he pronounced Kobe as "Kobie" instead of using the proper Japanese e pronounciation.
He does have speach problems though, so some things can be excused.
Silverr 4 years ago 2
I'm with you on that. Still, he talks funny in English (accent nonwithstanding), so you can't blame him for the Japanese.
