wow you actually know what your talking about and teach concepts and most importantly !EXPLAIN WHY AND WHAT! you are doing....please dont ever stop giving a solid music theory lesson while teaching even if it seems novice, it forces people to relearn or learn fundamentals of music theory, which is scarce now on guitar....
Thank you for this great lesson Andrew! I know I've seen this before and have had it explained to me before, but the more I hear and practice it the clearer it becomes.
@slashy04 In that case if the correct term is 'Modal Interchange' does that mean you don't have to borrow from parallel major/minor's? You can borrow chords from modal scales such as Lydian, Mixolydian? And obviously the same to minor modal scales?
I like your videos dude, but can you slow down a wee bit when you're talking (or just lay off the caffeine) It's nice to have some time for the material to sink in a bit! Keep up the good work!
In Pivot Chord Modulation, when establishing the key, do you HAVE to use the I IV V? And if you do/don't, does it matter which Chords you use, like the II or III or VII?
@puppetmetal I IV V are strong chords which establishe the key very well (See his video 'bout chords fonctions)...But you don't HAVE to use these 3 types necessarily ....It's up to you.
After the modulation, it's good to have a strong progression (V I of the new key for ex.) following your Pivot Chord to install the new key...
Hope it helps (and sorry if it's not clear...English is not my language)
major scale has 7 diff scales in it by just going from C to C D to D E to E
so bassacly you memorize five shapes they all connect allong the neck and allow you to go through everyshape up and down with ease........the lydian and locrian shapes you dont reall have to memorize ... this is how you open up the guitar neck for shreddege C Major is also C ionian(major) D dorian E phrygian F lydian G mixolydian A aeolian (nat minor) B locrian all have same notes shapes just shift per KEY
@clarkewi I would agree, I have been playing music for a while and know quite a bit of theory but I think cause Andrew and myself are already on the other side of the fence we take the musical terms for granted when other people might not understand them.
10 is kind of a lot though :-/ but def more than 1!
He does include all of the things that you NEED to know before attempting it though...
I think most people learn the modes to make polyrythmns and harmonizing riffs and scales or licks if you play heavier stuff as part of like 16th and 32nd note riffs,
learning the modes mixolydian, harmonic minor, ionian (major) etc is what most people struggle with because there is just so much to memorize
hmm well not to patronize you if you already know this, but look into and explain to these people that the modes are all the same scale. Theyre all the major scale but starting on a different note.
In fact the idea of the modes being seperate scales is a pretty new one in music theory, back in the classical period german composers used to refer to these scales simply as "inversions" of the major
yes it's easy for you and i to understand that they are just re-arranged major scales c major - ionian d - dorian etc, but too many noobs get confused, that modes arent scales they are just manipulations of them, harmonic minor, gypsy, hungarian, those are scales
for me personally this video wouldn't have made sense to me at all when i was trying to learn, i think most musicians would struggle with this, guitarists in particular as it's probably the most relavent with arpeggios sweeps etc
for youtube, .mov files and .avi files are recommended.
although .wmv work excellent also, .mov and .avi files have higher video and sound quality.
and i didnt know about Andrew's format until i saw the title. It had the .wmv extension in the end.
even though this video looks and sounds excellent, it could look and sound much better if the correct settings are applied to the .mov and .avi files.
PS .avi files can be a bit too big. so .mov files are recommended

Is Parallel key a type of modulation as well? Like from D major to D minor or is that just borrowed chords?
kingymusic 4 months ago
@kingymusic that's modal interchange, so yes

Hey iGianTV,
I have a question. Why are you saying not to upload with the .WMV file extension?
Is Andrew's video in that format?
It looks & sounds excellent, how do you know what format people do the post in?
Please respond to my comment.
I really want to know. I want to post a
video soon.
Thank you.

before Andrew changed the title of this video it said simply "modulation.wmv" which is probably the file name of the file he uploaded...
