I DIDN'T KNOW GOATS WERE SUCH A COMMON FORM OF TRANSPORTATION TILL I STARTED WATCHING THIS VIDEO - WHICH I HAVE SEEN DOZENS OF TIMES - THESE GREAT OLD PIX WITH THE EXQUISITE MUSIC OF DELIUS ARE A GREAT COMBINATION - THE LADY BY THE ALLIGATOR SIGN LOOKS LIKE MY MOTHER IN HER YOUNGER DAYS, AND I LOOOOOOVE THAT GIANT TREE - I'VE NEVER SEEN A TREE SO GLORIOUS IN REAL LIFE - PROBABLY CAUSE THEY ARE ALL CUT DOWN BY NOW. I LOOOOOOOOOOVE THIS VIDEO - THANKS FOR MAKING IT - I MIGHT COPY THE IDEA......
Oops! I forgot to say thanks for the picture of the mermaids (I assume that is Weekiwatchee Springs on old U.S. 19. We used to go swimming there when we traveled from North-central Florida to St. Petersburg to visit my Aunt back in the 40s. Yes, it was before AC! We would cool off with a swim, then picnic, and would arrive at her house in late afternoon. Thanks again.
Thank you jaxdriver for uploading this music. The pictures are wonderful! Somewhere in my albums I have old, old postcards of the Suwanee River Jungle Drive near Old Town. I am a fifth generation native of Florida and have seen many scenes such as you portray here (not quite old enough for the steamboats). Actually I already own this album but enjoyed it here as well.
Sublime.... how can I have come this far without knowing Delius' Florida Suite ? It's the missing link between every great pop tune from Verdi to the Beach Boys and beyond....
The first notes are very much like Bedrich Smetana's flowing river "Vltava" (usually identified by the German name of the river "Moldau"). But the lyrical part keeps me hearing the song "He Plays the Violin" from the musical 1776 . And all three are very pleasant to hear.
Frederick Delius is one of the most underrated composers. After listening to this small wonder that the late great Sir Thomas Beecham used to rave about him
The melodies are just dripping with emotion and his use of the full range of dynamics of the orchestra. How this piece moves me. It has an etherial beauty and magnificence
Lovely and serene - - conjures up the balmy South of long ago (with a dash of English pastoral themes). Sadly, I doubt Mr. Delius would recognize the over-developed, depressed Florida of today--with its verdant Everglades replaced by sprawl and stucco ghettos : {
@s1conrad Wouzld you agree that here´s an interesting touch of slightly slowed down, English Music-Hall in his melodies too? - "Down by the Old Bull-And Bush" sort of thing - His music has a lot to do with hedonism.
My God I had forgotten just how lucious this piece is, had a down for sometime
and only recently woken up. Moved and have new neighbours, mostly Czech, and one, Pavel is into his classical music. I gave him some Dvorak which of course he recognised plus some Delius, which he had never heard of. What a joy, thank you for posting it.
Tnx so much for posting! Wonderful pictures also; too bad for Florida that A/C was invented. Maybe people would spend more time relaxing instead of working feverishly inside climate-controlled buildings!
I hear a slowed down flavour of good old English Music-Hall song in many passages of Delius. I love his music and i think that it is a piece of his geography / memory / background.
Don't be absurd. Please note that Delius was born in 1862 making him three years old (and living in England) when the Civil War ended and the Union reacquired Florida freeing the slaves. Your contention regarding syphilis is probably equally spurious.
Hey, you and I both seem to thoroughly love the music of Delius. I know I do, but I can see you do through your amazing selection of visual accompanyment of the music.

@mossfitz True - when I hear this piece, I conjure up visions of Twickenham--not Tallahasee!

I think Max Steiner the Hollywood composer must have stolen from Delius, because this reminds me of some of his work.

This is my favorite movement of his Florida Suite.
This is one of those "untouchable" masterpieces.

Actually, he contracted Syphilis whilst he was in Paris as a young man. Where on Earth did you learn about him abusing slaves? Ridiculous notion!
