The 90s were the golden age of hockey. Just look at the draft class of 90-91, not to mention the stars that came out of the mid-to-late 80s. Miss that.
Im not aiming for stevie( love em) im aiming for crosby when i say its better to have a better more experianst captain than a young dick face. Crosby sucks ass. Go stevie and gordie and nick and most likely henrik great captains( i hope zetterburg will be if chosen):)
classiest...hardest working....toughest....most loyal captain this sport is going to see in a very long time... Sidney Crosby does not play like Steve Yzerman however leads in the same way Stevie did. I'm not even a big Crosby fan but he idolized Yzerman growing up and I wouldn't be suprisped if he followed in his footsteps..next exceptional captain
@younggun88 Woah woah woah there - you lost me when you said Crosby has ANYTHING in common with Yzerman. Crosby is a classless little bitch, constantly slashing and diving; Yzerman is among the classiest to ever play. How are they similar?
@aidanday They are similar because they were both given the "C" very young in their careers. The fact that Crosby is so young and idolizes a great leader like Yzerman can lead us to believe he will become a better captain...all im saying is Crosby has the heart and opportunity to be compared to Stevie Y....maybe in another 15 years though.
@younggun88 I get what you're saying, and I appreciate your polite response. Crosby (it's so hard to not type Crys-by...!!!) will likely retire as a 20-year captain. However, we are all familiar with several instances of poor sportsmanship on Crosby's part; he has a lot of growing up to do. Also: didn't Crosby *insist* on being captain? That's ... wow... you earn it, you don't demand it.
@younggun88 Stevie came in a class act, and you cant teach that. Crosby is a little weasle, and he always will be. I dont deny his skill, he is just a jerk off. Do you understand that when he got his 400th goal, Mark how was still playing. He put his team above himself. You are only going to find guys like this that have be brought up through the Red Wings program.
Im lucky enough to be old enough (25) to watch some of his great highlights and ups and downs in his career.... I always admired him from the day I played hockey all the way till now.. He is an icon of leadership and class and most importantly the leader of the wings dynasty as it stands today. Miss ya Steve
Every Wings Fan Loves Steve , Im from sault ste marie ON , ( if you look on a map its inbetween the great lakes huron and Superior) My dad my brother and I are all huge Yzerman Fans altho due to teh fact that Im only turing 21 I dont remember alot of his games that ive seen
Steve is EVERYTHING of what the Red Wings stand for. A team that has been known for being Stanley Cup Champions. Best of all, in my opinion, he is the BEST Captain of the Red Wings EVER. If it wasn't for Steve's leadership, Hockeytown would've never, EVER won the 3 Stanley Cups. Steve, god bless you, thank you for what you've done for us in Detroit, and you ARE the face of the Red Wings!!! LONG LIVE #19!!!
Nice tribute video with all the up's and down's. Real good, but there are only few plays that can carry a team with all the people shouting "Dead wings" or "Dead things" back in the 80's and show pessimism in the early 90's then phrasing him when he brings home the cup. I'm taking to all that trashed his team and now love the team more then ever, he knows it but never shows it.
tell you what, there was a time in the NHL where the "C" wasn't given to the most famous person on the team, nor was it given to the most "skilled" but was given to the person who had leadership and class.
Steve Yzerman is the greatest hockey player of all time. No only did he posses world class offensive abilities and a defensive game that ranks among the best ever, but he had leadership, integrity, and perseverance. No player suffered and gave as much as he did for Detroit. On top of that he did it with class like no other.

I grew up in Toledo, 60 miles from Detroit. Huge Wings fan. But what Steve did for hockey and the city of Detroit is simply amazing. I miss seeing him on the ice. The next tribute video you make should be Lidstrom. His number will be next to Steves' in a few yrs. But are the classiest to ever wear the "C". Thanks for the video. It's being favorited.
jaipaul68 - Steve was not born or raised in Windsor -- he was born in Cranbrook, British Columbia Canada - he lived there until he was 9 and then his family moved to Napean ( a suburb of Ottawa) .. he played 2 seasons in the OHL with the Peterborough Petes from 1981-1983 and then was drafted to Detroit.

I always thought back and was sad that i missed him in his prime. I started watching Hockey in 97 when my brother would come over and watch the playoffs and i have been in love ever since but looking back i think i did see him in his prime from 97-02..Great player and i miss him!!!
Steve Yzerman is my influence he is what got me into the sport of hockey and got me to be a wings fan..everyday i was over at my dad's and the game was on i'd watch for Yzerman. what is the name of the second song?
I met Stevie when I was 8 years old to get some pictures signed. Even though we were told one per person, he signed one for me and my brother even when he was told not to. He is a great player, and person. We all miss him.
I live in Yzerman's hometown of Ottawa and when he won the cup for first time, he brought it home to Ottawa and he didn't go to a bar or restaurant for a party, he got off the plane in Ottawa and went straight to the Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario, so some sick kids could touch the cup. Yzerman = Class.
Steve Yzerman is without a doubt one of the greatest Detroit sports athletes ever. He was a role model for me growing up in the early 1990s and I'm grateful to have chosen such a stellar person. I remember shaking his hand at Gibralter Trade Center in the 90s and I'll never forget that. I also remember seeing him play when I took my grandmother to her first Red Wings game. Cheers to you Stevie!
I'll never forget the 1:35 goal, the OT series winner against StL. The wind-up, the blast, the "tink" as it nicked the post, and the series was suddenly over.
What a great consolation prize - we missed out on Pat Lafontaine (with the Islanders' 3rd pick) and we took Stevie Y with the 4th pick in the draft.
Both are great guys. It was a thrill to watch his many moments, and his 3 laps around the rink with Lord Stanley's Cup!!!
truly remarkable.....as a leaf fan i hated him (out of respect of his skill) for making us look ordinary every time he stepped on the ice at the gardens. but his work off the ice is what makes me privileged to watch him play, a great ambassador not only for the sport, but to this whirlwind we call life. cheers to you Detroit...you are envied by nearly every fan of the game.
There will NEVER be another player in the NHL like him. EVER. Classy, respectful, talented. They don't make 'em like that anymore and I sure do miss him. I'm still not over his retirement. Eventually, I will be though. At least I hope so. Just an absolutely wonderful and awesome man. I love him.
you know many would compare him and joe sakic to each other and i think they are very much alike as you said classy respectful talented there really arent players like that anymore
I was 20 rows from the ice on the goal line when Stevie scored his 500th goal, beating Roy when he was a Canadian. Shanahan also beat Roy for his 500th a few years later when Roy was an Av.
He was so good he made some of the best players look bad, and you could never count him out. Best of all he stuck with one team (I find players a little better when they do that) through out his entire carer, through the bad and good.
Steve Yzerman was my hockey hero. I'll never forget his game-winning goal in the olympics against Finland. Or his 155 points in 1989 becoming only the 4th player to record at least 150 points in a season. Or his double overtime goal in the 1996 playoffs. These are just his most memorable moments. The rest are too numerous to list! He will go down in my record book as the greatest Red Wing ever!
Steve Yzerman is definately hands down my #1 hero in history of sports, and always will be, I looked up to him as my icon, childhood hero, idolizing him, hands down #1 fav athlete of all time and as a roll model on and off the ice he was greatest all around athlete and leader I ever saw in sports, and greatest athlete to ever look up to, and that video was definitely a perfect 10
I am not, nor ever was a Red Wings fan BUT I cannot deny Steve Yzerman the utmost respect. He is the calssiest, most respectable, hard working person ever to lace up a pair of skates. And his class and his love extended well beyond the game, trust me, I have friends who fell on hard times and one of the first people to offer support was Captain Yzerman. He will be missed but never forgotten!!!!
My favorite and ONLY sports player I've ever looked up to in my life.
He's the only person I've never heard a bad word said about by anyone in Michigan. I can't even tell you how much i respect all he's done for us, his heart and class is second to none!
Early in his career Yzerman was mentioned in the same breath as Wayne and Mario. He was putting up huge numbers with almost no help. In 87 he had 157 points which is the most ever by anyone but Gretzky and Lemieux. He deserves alot of credit for changing his game and becoming a more complete player after suffering 2 bad knee injuries. Besides all that he's a class act off the ice as well.
Just to little correct it, season with his maximum of 155p was 1988/89. Nobody has ever scored more points except Mario and Wayne. He finished that season with Lester B. Pearson Award and i was able to watch him playing World Championship that year(as eastern-european i could not watch NHL then). I am his huge fan since.
he might not be the most skilled player ever, but he definately had the most desire and had the biggest heart. with all the selfish athletes of today's world its great to remember an amazing man like the captain.
if u messed with gretzky, u messed with the whole team, but if you messed with steve yzerman, you messed with the whole city of detroit. he truly is one of the greatest sports icons of all-time
Great job! When our Wings get their much deserved and long overdue new arena, it should be named after Stevie. Miss you - there'll never be another. What a class act and thee most terrific player!
All because he heeded his coach's advice and focused more on his defense. That's why I think Stevie Y is one of the all-time greats. Not because he was a scoring machine like Gretzky or Lemieux. But because he was a solid all-around player. I can honestly say as a hockey fan, I feel extremely proud and privileged to have been able to watch Yzerman play his entire career with the Red Wings.
Greatest player ever..Despite playing with the Wings when they sucked look at all the points he scored! He's a great leader, extremly tough and Gretzky didn't do much when he was off the powerhouse Oilers.Yzerman would have been a Gretzky without a doubt if he was on the Oilers when he was young.(oh and yes the wings are a great team...i was just sayin')
Let's examine Yzerman's legacy. He wasn't the leader during the Demers years, O'Connor, Shneps, McLean and Burr were. He was a colossal failure during the Murray years and for the first couple of Bowman years. During those years he was cut three times from Team Canada because he wasn't truly elite and the coaching staff felt he lacked the ability to compete. Finally, it was Larionov and Shanahan who led the team during the Cup years. So, when exactly was he the great leader of men, hmmm?
What an idiot. They failed as a team. Yzerman was not the reason they lost. And by the way Gretzky had to beg him to play for Canada in 2001 and he carried that team.
ok for those who have read my last comment, i ment the clip that ends at 5:03...not the one that starts. i was referring to the clip where he is wearing the Team Canada jersey. I love Yzerman, i would never betray the man. Personnaly, i think he is tied for the greatest player to play the game. the man is a legend, he sells out arenas no matter where he goes. Greatest Canadian attribute
That was a great video and yes steve yzerman is the best person I have ever met and he is still working hard at a club i see him every week his is the best. Go Steve Yzerman 19
r u serious? Wow no repect for one of if not the greatest player to ever play the game. He came back from knee surgery that no athlete has ever come back from. Bet you didnt no that so maybe you shouldnt talk bud.
Yzerman - great player, incredible team leader on and off the ice. so many memories for all of his fans. He is missed on the ice, but we'll never forget him. Thanks for this video, I live in Minneapolis and we NEVER get CBC sports or any Wings coverage.
next up, the captain #5

He in the hall yet?

Steve Yzerman was my hockey hero. I'll never forget his game-winning goal in the olympics against Finland. Or his 155 points in 1989 becoming only the 4th player to record at least 150 points in a season. Or his double overtime goal in the 1996 playoffs. These are just his most memorable moments. The rest are too numerous to list! He will go down in my record book as the greatest Red Wing ever!

The part where he retired brought a tear to my left eye.
I will always miss Yzerman as part of the Red Wings roster.

Besides all that he's a class act off the ice as well.
fishdogger 3 years ago
Just to little correct it, season with his maximum of 155p was 1988/89. Nobody has ever scored more points except Mario and Wayne. He finished that season with Lester B. Pearson Award and i was able to watch him playing World Championship that year(as eastern-european i could not watch NHL then). I am his huge fan since.
Michal103818 3 years ago
he might not be the most skilled player ever, but he definately had the most desire and had the biggest heart. with all the selfish athletes of today's world its great to remember an amazing man like the captain.

Best player in my opinion.
And we almost traded him to Ottawa before we won the cups.
What a great non-decision.
boomer70020 3 years ago
All because he heeded his coach's advice and focused more on his defense. That's why I think Stevie Y is one of the all-time greats. Not because he was a scoring machine like Gretzky or Lemieux. But because he was a solid all-around player. I can honestly say as a hockey fan, I feel extremely proud and privileged to have been able to watch Yzerman play his entire career with the Red Wings.
reaverofsouls 3 years ago 4

So, when exactly was he the great leader of men, hmmm?
dome1972 3 years ago
What an idiot. They failed as a team. Yzerman was not the reason they lost. And by the way Gretzky had to beg him to play for Canada in 2001 and he carried that team.

ok for those who have read my last comment, i ment the clip that ends at 5:03...not the one that starts. i was referring to the clip where he is wearing the Team Canada jersey. I love Yzerman, i would never betray the man. Personnaly, i think he is tied for the greatest player to play the game. the man is a legend, he sells out arenas no matter where he goes. Greatest Canadian attribute
