  • Love it

  • who are these cheese-dicks talking while Elliott Smith is playing?!? they need to STFU.

  • Wounded. So deep and sensitive soul, hurt forever. His manner of death was not accidental, we wanted to say: "My heart is broken forever." Without drugs, without alcohol, but still hurt forever. He could no longer endure all that pain. Elliott come in my dreams, let me hug you ..... at least once.

  • When he begins to whistle and he realizes that all imitate him, looks up and watches them with a smile that is not enough to define sweet..... continues with an expression that I have rarely seen him so calm, almost relaxed, to sing. It seems that Elliott feels taken in hand by John, it's like to feel at home. Wonderful, moving, his voice is a thousand times more angelic Lennon, the piece becomes another through him. Can you hear me?

  • Love, look, and I see bright and pure love, is wonderful! Elliott hears me, I love you so much! I'm listening and I am moved, chills through me. You're more alive than ever.

  • dope!

  • No-one in Madagascar has watched this vid??? weirdos!

  • Screw Lennon, Elliott took this song and made it his bitch.

  • I can't help but whistle with the song.

  • love it

  • Great cover of this song. I really wish he could have collaborated with Michael Penn on something before his passing.

  • Thank you John! thank you elliott!! ...love you both so much!

  • gave me chills.

  • If anyone is qualified to cover this song, it's Elliott Smith. D-Bag crowd.

  • this is absolutely amazing. i've just realised how much Elliott reminds me of John.

  • i can't believe there's whispering while Elliott sings

  • There are not enough of you beautiful sharing guitar players in the world. Thank you...I have added this to my favorites...more than that , i wish we could play together. God Bless Elliot and your gift of teaching to the world/ loveyourteachingstyle, your goodness of gift

  • In a kind of eerie coincidence, this song was written by Lennon and covered by Elliot and also Donny Hathaway, All three died tragically and prematurely,

  • such a good song , elliott does it well indeed...love to the both of them they were so special

  • WOW!!! That's the best cover of a Lennon song I've ever heard!

  • 14 people have an alternative opinion... and that's perfectly alright and apart of human nature.

  • No worries. This club is a clothing store in Little Five Points now.

  • very hard song to sing. GREAT JOB MAN !!@

  • @Thevictorians It seems like an american thing - watching Tristan prettyman live on YT there is always loads of mupets chatting all though the songs too. tut

  • his smiling,,,:)

    love him

  • he's like an angel,,,,,

    RIP Elliott

  • one of my favorites that elliott covered... beautiful! such a shame that there is so much chatter..

  • I never payed attention to chatting until i read comments. Captain Hindsight would say you shouldn't have posted about the chatting in background, or if only you wouldn't have thumbs upped those comments.

  • @Ebinification i didn't have to read any comments.. the chatter jumps out before he even starts to perform.

  • @Ebinification i accidentally hit the thumbs down button on this comment, but i meant to hit thumbs up, because it's true and hilarious.

  • Be quiet, people! Genius is taking place.

  • perfect cover. thanks for posting loveishell. so beautiful.

  • @yoshiplace. . also "Because" was featured at the end of "American Beauty". . I was pleasantly surprised to hear him at the end of the movie :)

  • I was able to see him sing this at the Fillmore. . I LOVED it! thanks so much for this!! I miss him, also colligsulli14, just so you know. I first saw him up at Bellingham at the college there, a room packed with hundreds of us on our feet. and every time he sang you could hear a pin drop. .the stillness proved we all KNEW we were watching a magician. . he was incredibly shy, humble and very very powerful. . I treasure my opportunities with him. Once we met, he always treated me with respect

  • I was able to see him sing this at the Fillmore. . I LOVED it! thanks so much for this!! I miss him

  • This version is garbage. I don't get what everybody likes about this version.

  • not many humans can do a john lennon tune justice like this

  • i love you

  • he actually ued to like when people would talk and not all focus on him

  • All of you writing about talking during concerts? It's what happens at venues- it would be creepy if it was silent. People never appreciate things or people until they are gone. Trust me having lost many friends to inexcusable deaths that you don't ever pay full attention until you no longer have a chance. Elliot made beautiful music - appreciate it in whatever form you can listen to it.

  • stupid americans have tradition of making dead pple gods just cause they are dead , i bet if elliot was alive he wouldnt get recognition as now

  • @elektra1984 ...oh you mean like Terry Reid, Alasdair Clayre, or Jez Lowe....much like they are recognized today.......idiot

  • @elektra1984 your a bitch...

  • @elektra1984 He was on David Letterman, Here in America, that means you've made it...Point being, he did have recognition before his death.

  • @elektra1984 yes, but...he was great when he wasn't dead...he played at the oscars and had his songs featured in movies like good will hunting and the royal tenenbaums, all while he was alive. i don't think anybody saw those though.

  • its more real with people talking in the background , im sure he would have preferred it this way

  • From Atlanta, please disable the comments on this video. Elliott Smith deserves to RIP. Yes, we drink at concerts, still do right along with mostly everyone else, (you know not every singer asks you to stfu like Conor Oberst does although I agree it would be respectful). But stop analyzing this talented soul that was laid to rest at far too young an age, it is far more disrespectful than speaking while someone sings.

  • I love it when he starts whistling and smiles

  • heartbreaking,,,i wish he was still here

  • i saw him in leeds(uk) at a festival. it was raining that hard that the whole tent was bowed in. i thought it was gonna collapse. finally the tent split above the drummer. about 50 gallons of water must have landed on him, but he didn't miss a beat. no of them did, it 't up there with seeing james brown

  • Just in tears Love it

  • Was this at Waterloo Records in Austin? I was there if so. He played this song, and said something identical at the beginning. If that's the case, people are talking because they are in a store. He did an appearance there and played at concert at a venue later the same night. I went to both.

  • I'm watching the Lennon covers uploaded 2 utube.

Hes 1 of my faves...not bad.

  • good cover

  • f2ckin americans, ruined a lovely performance/song...typical US w@nkers...

  • @APartridge69 have some respect . Without us americans you would be speaking kraut cocksucker.

  • @APartridge69 u do realize that elliott himself was american ahah. plus im pretty sure they were all wasted, but if i were there i wouldve told everyone to shut the fuck up and listen to the beautiful music

  • He told the crowed to whistle with his eye's, did you see this??

    We love you Elliott.

  • He was one of the purest souls to have ever graced this fucked up planet. It is not surprising that he didn't feel at home in this world. Peace.

  • I think I am angry that he died so young. It's sad to me that all of the songs he could have written are lost. There are alot of emotions involved, and that's great art- to evoke any kind of emotion. At least he left a beautiful legacy, making his songs even more special. To vanish into oblivion is not an easy thing for Elliott Smith.

  • whistle solo!!!

  • I saw him twice in 2000 in Atlanta when he was promoting Figure 8. Which venue was this?

  • Check out Raul Midon's cover of this - also awesome!

    Rice an' Peace! /\

  • just enjoy the music :]

  • He died of two stab wounds. It's possible to stab yourself more than once - it just takes adrenaline. I hate to break this to you but Smith was incredibly depressed and a heroin user. If it was anything else than suicide I think that would have been cleared up through the proper channels. I seriously doubt that fans going on hearsay know better than forensics and the judicial system. There is no big mystery or conspiracy around his death, only tragedy. The thing we need focus on is his talent.

  • Oh good god don't tell me what I should be thinking. I have a right to my opinion just as much as you. The only people who really know what happened were Elliott and his girlfriend. I'm not getting into a pissing contest about who knows more about Elliott Smith. Your as bad as the ones who complain about how his name is spelled wrong. Were you there? Can a depressed person not also be killed? I hate to break it to you but you should take it easy.

  • OK if you read my post you will see I was very careful not to tell you what to think. A discussion is a clash of opinions. I no nothing about u so you really cant take this as a personal snipe. I dont claim to no more than you (no do I really care) - the only fact I stated was that he died of two stab which it is feasible to think that a single person inflicted, whereas multiple stab wounds implies that someone couldnt possibly do it to themselves.

  • No I wasn't there, clearly or we wouldnt be havin this discussion. And yes a depressed person can be killed but you have to admit that it makes it more likely that he did rather than a completely happy person free of drug addiction. I'm not having a go, its just I think that the mystery surrounding his death becomes too much of a focus and detracts from his music. Its the same with Jeff Buckley. We both agree he's awesome. Im not a child bickering about this, just having a chat. Dont be offended

  • R.I.P Elliott Smith

  • why cant the douchebags in the audience shut up and just listen to this brilliant musician

  • Somebody tab the chord he plays at 0:28 its cracking me up.

  • tune down one whole tone, and try from bottom to top [x42000]

  • it's so unbelievably sad that he died. far out.

  • how did he hie???he seems so young..

  • suicide. :/

  • This is so cool. Elliott always chose such poignant songs to cover. haha its cool that he at least tried the whistle part...it is not easy

  • I'd rather hear him cover Lennon than any other singer.

  • @ziffels i can think of several - crenshaw, cobain, lucinda williams, hell even mccartney. elliott smith doesn;t have the pipes for lennon songs

  • ide give my life to bring elliott back for everyone else.

  • you rock man ... We dont want you to go either man... haha thankyou for the sacrafice ...lol R.I.P. Elliott.

  • Grace acrues envy, with a show of stout devotion, one finds flaw at present. What is that flaw, VULNERABILIITY. Vulnerability...that is all. One takes qualm. Vulnerability is a higher coin than pointless taunting. If it is not pointless, praytell MAKE your correction. In conclusion, what if sacrifice of JBobTC were real for that person. What if in that moment, it made total sense to care that deeply for beloved. What if sacrifice was conducted in the moment of passion and it was enough.

  • @alightinflesh Take it easy Einstein. Its figuratively, not literally. It doesn't require deep philosophical thinking.

  • For me

  • We wouldn't want you to brother! Elliott had his time and wanted to go.

  • My biggest regret in life is that I wasn't introduced to Elliott's music sooner. Then maybe I could have listened to him in person. R.I.P. Elliott, we love you.

  • @Kadual Same here. I was introduced to him through The Royal Tenenbaums.

  • passed by. why

  • lol, he wasn't a bad whistler.

  • COPMMUSIC aka the intelligentsia!

The voice of Lennon I don't fecking think, great cover by a great artist.

  • @COPMMUSIC ,FUCK YOU!

  • Watching this just made me a whole lot happier. :D and also sad to realize what a beautiful person we've lost.

  • usually covers suck BUT elliott does a smash up job. i'm freakin crying right now dude. i just realized he's been gone for six years and it really really hit me yesterday

  • God Blelss You!

  • Beautiful. I usually don't like anybody's cover of any of The Beatles songs or their solo stuff but Elliot Smith does this song justice. He's a great artist. I love his stuff.

  • Daniel Johnston does some sweet covers.

  • Everybody whistles, they made Elliott Smith smile!! (how rare is that)

  • gran cover tan hermoso como el original, thanks Eliott R.I.P.

  • i love the way he did this song. normally, i don't think anyone can beat john lennon, but elliot smith can put such emotion in to this song, and make it sound as if he wrote it.

  • Two great artists (Elliott and John), one great song, and a great beanie hat. When I die, If I make it to Heaven, I hope I am on the same level as Elliott Smith. Elliott Smith and Anne Frank. Those are the first people I'll look for if I pass through the pearly gates.

R.I.P Elliott. You couldn't make it through this life, but you're songs give me hope

  • I like how he was laughing during the whistling solo. Nice to see him with a smile for once.

  • Elliott Smith does such a better job than John Lennon with this song. He doesn't have the other instruments hiding his voice. It's relaxing.

  • MAESTRO!

  • Why are so many people talking while Elliott plays? So rude.

  • so sad... he was truely great :/

  • such a gentle voice.

He's really was one of the brilliant. Rest in peace Elliot.

  • he had so much talent......so sad.....i love his music so much..rip.

  • I'm speechless...and so, so sad...didn't know about his dead...I love his music..

  • Why is their a lot of talking in the background. The venue should be dead silent. Its Elliott Smith for fuck dsake. What I would give to see him live.(Only heard bout him after his death) And here are these people just chattin away like. They dont know how lucky they are to have gotten the chance to see him.

  • It's easy to take people for granted... I know what I'd give to see him alive... not to play - but to know he was alive.

I can't help but look at his death and try to be happy, he doesn't have to feel the pain anymore...

I can only pray that one day I can sit down in another existence and spend some time with this beautiful individual.

if you look up "OPB think out loud Elliott Smith 5 years later" on google - it'll take you to a radio interview with Autumn De Wilde and others. it's great.

  • you're totally right

like most humans, never can see what`s in front of us,

they never knew what they missed, perhaps after he is dead they mite get a "oh, sigh!"

    y'know?

    it`s sad.

  • well, it's the south.....what do you expect?

  • couldn't agree with you more.

  • @colligsulli14 because no one cares about artists until they're famous or dead. He's probably playing some open mike.

  • @johnsmithe1 This was in '98, so the same year as XO. I doubt he was doing any open mic nights at that point.

  • @colligsulli14 when i went to an elliott smith show in 1999 in Amsterdam, a couple of drunk people were talking in the back. some people told them to shut up and they did. i think that happened alot. see my page for an interview with elliott, talking about other things.

  • @colligsulli14 I couldn't agree more! I'm only 17 so I never got a chance to see him :( I'd kill to see him, sucks hes dead, hes amazing.

  • @colligsulli14 Tat'sa why he's a kilt hisself!!!

  • Happy Birthday Elliott. I miss you.

  • Videos like this make me sad. It seems like hopelessly talented musicians like Elliott are hopelessly lost in the world. You are missed Elliot.

  • Amazing cover by the fifth beatle

  • FG-180 4evah brothah!!

  • This was a great song to cover. and Elliott really does a great job. his voice really works for this one

  • What a beautiful voice. I love Elliot Smith. I mean Needle in The Hay; masterpiece. And this is a great interpretation. All of the things I dig about him are shown here.

  • LOVE IT!!!! pretty much anything elliott smith i cant get enough of!!!!

  • i love it when elliott smiles. i think he enjoyed the whistle. =)

  • i wish i could have met you...

  • Such a beautiful person, such a great talent, I miss him

  • what happened to elliott i dont want to look it up id rather hear from a fan? i love his style.

  • Are you serious?

  • Hate to break it to you, you must not be a huge fan, because he's been dead since Oct. 21 2003.

Saddest fact, but fact none the less.

Two stab wounds to the chest - after an argument with his girlfriend, who according to her, heard a scream after she'd locked herself in the bathroom. She emerged to find him on the floor, with two stab wounds in his chest.

The forensic evidence is incomplete - and they don't know if it was self inflicted - or if she was the one who stabbed him. I say it's her

  • This guy was clearly asking how Elliott died, not literally "where did he go?" or anything. It's extremely obvious given the wording. Heil Hitler. I'm gay.

  • im a growing fan, thats pretty tragic and like so many great people died in wierd circumstances.

  • Jesus Shad, you didn't have to be a fucking elitist about it. Some people don't pay attention to the news(I don't blame them).

  • first of all, this probably didn't make any major news networks (his death) - and it surely wasn't reported on for weeks and weeks such as 9/11.

If you consider yourself a fan of Elliott Smith, you should be aware he's been dead for almost 6 years. It's nothing elitist - and you're right, some don't pay attention to the news. But I see that as a bad thing, not just something to ignore.

Apathy is the single greatest threat to this world... and look at how many apathetic assholes there are.

  • Actually it was, you probably didn't start listening to him until after his death, and since you see as paying attention to the news a "bad thing" then that certainly shows you either had an "apathetic" week during his death, or you just weren't a fan of his at the time.

Who are you to say "it's something a fan should be aware of"?

    Rage more. Elitist.

  • listen douche - I live in Portland, I've been a fan of his music long before he died - I had the privilege of seeing him play.

And you certainly can't read - because I said it's bad NOT to watch the news.

By the way, I don't buy for a second when you say it was covered extensively - maybe it got some attention in L.A. or Portland - but it wasn't big news to most people.

So who am I to say? - just a fan - and if you don't even know he's dead, you aren't what I'd call a fan.

  • Well you should blame them. Being lazy seems to have become a one size fits all excuse.

  • Jesus why is so hard for people to believe that people kill themselves?

  • well, in this case, its the defensive wounds on his arms, and the 2 deep stabs into the chest. japanese samurai couldn't generally muster 2. and elliot was, well, kinda sensitive. It's really hard to stab yourself in the chest that hard. twice.

people kill themselves. And he was playing with that fire. But someone else was probably weilding that knife, according to the forensics...

    such a great artist.

  • I use to think the same thing, but then I heard from my journalism instructor, that as an editor - he covered a story about a guy who committed suicide by hitting himself in the head with a hammer... 37 times.

  • Did you look at the forensics report?

  • I read a Harp magazine article that talked about the forensics report. numerous horizontal cuts on the arms, and 2 stab wounds to the chest. You often get lots of cuts on the arms in a knife fight.

  • yah but i read about a friend of his, or maybe it was his music producer i cant remember, saying how elliott had a scar on his chest from attempting suicide n he had self injured, and there was atleast one other former suicide attempt reported so that makes it seem like it was suicide. the world will never know though =/

  • he died in 2003. its not certain if he killed himself or if his girlfriend did it.

  • who was his girlfriend? joanne??

  • He's bloody amazing.

Thanks so much for this. <3

    I miss him .

  • Everyone needs a whistler.

    -ES

  • Did you see the slight smile when he first started the whistle?

  • This is a great cover.

  • so much love!

  • People seem to have this urge to make comparisons between Drake and Elliott; but even Elliott said he didn't necessarily agree with that comparison.

And they're both amazing - Nick Drake was amazing, Elliott Smith was amazing -

It's all personal taste, myself, I've invested a lot more time in Smith, while Drake remains a few scattered songs on my Ipod - But songs like "Pink moon" are beautiful

  • Totally agreed, they are both amazing - And John Lennon is few times more amazing than both of them ;]

  • I think it's a pretty cover.

  • poor elliot

  • there is an awful lot of crowd noise. ouch. it must be irritating to play that room. nick drake refused to play live becuase of crowd noise.

  • "If you haven't heard of Nick Drake that doesn't mean he's not popular."

Yeah but it doesn't mean he's good either. Popularity is not a sign of quality, it's just a sign that it's been heard and liked by a lot of people who may have missed something better.

More people drink Budweisser than real beer, more people drive Ford than Audi. More people know of Nick Drake than Elliott Smith, sadly more people know more of Gwen Steffani than either (the real tragedy is that she's not the one dead)

  • you all need hugs

  • I think that way more people know of elliott smith than nick drake. most people that I know have heard of elliott smith.

  • : ) eit bombon

    Lovi u XD

  • this made me cry

i love both versions equally but this has so much more emotion

  • i love it how people are constantly criticizing and pointing out other people's mistakes, when everyone makes them. go ahead, be ruthless. i'm sure i've made a few already.

  • "if we were really going to get technilcal, in America the period goes inside the quotation marks."

also, it's technical. we are all stupid, admit it!

  • oh yeah!
