I've tried making corn tortillas many times with masa and they are too thick. When I make them thinner I find it very hard to pull them off of the plastic. Any tips?
Hey guys, I made corn tortillas with just masa and water last night and they puffed up like the video. Apparently the tortillas will puff up if they are thin enough. Hope that helps. I also started by adding hot tap water and letting the dough rest until it was cool, about 15 min. Makes fantastic gluten free tortillas. :-)
not sure what the person who made these has mixed with them but tortillas made with just masa harina don't puff up like that. this must be a mix of flour and masa. i've tried it and it works well
@MiCompre I found mine on ebay because I wanted one a bit bigger and it was shipped from US seller at comparable rate. But mexgrocer.co.uk sells them and they are great. :-)
Thanks for this video! I have made corn tortillas twice now and I could only get some to puff up. Now that I see you use two Comals at two temperatures I am going out to buy me a new comal so I can do it your way.
Homemade corn tortillas taste SO MUCH better than pre-packaged store bought ones. They are lovely straight out of the pan with a touch of butter. You can't eat them that way with the store-bought ones!
Very true. However, I would think those who are allergic to a certain type of flour would know, and seek an alternative. It is hardly this person's responsibility to issue a warning is it?
urmmm... what?? I was simply replying to the answer above me, where the person was saying not to make these with corn flour :D As that is what brought me here in the first place, searching for alternative, which is tortilla tutorial with corn flour, as my daughter is allergic. Who said nything about warning???
@prakashrana12 You can buy them at your local Mexican grocery store or you can buy them online. They range from $10 to $20 and they are always cast iron. It's a great and sturdy kitchen tool.
@Usernametpc well yeah that is basically all a tortilla is... you take minsa or maseca and add water until it feels like a soft bread dough or amm playdough... Then make a ball and put in between two pieces of wax paper or something in a tortilla press or you could use a rolling pin and then heat a comal or skillet to like a little opver half way high and cook 20 minutes on one side at a time... keep flipping until it's cooked. Thats all really.
This is great! I would like to make tortillas for Passover. Can I just use flour, salt and water without any leavening? Me and my sons love to cook together this will be a great project for us. Where can you find the press and the pans?

You sure can tell those two have made about a bazillion tortillas in their lifetimes!!! Well done. And thanks for the ingredients. I've never seen anyone ever add the other 2 flours, though. How come you do?
I watched this video about three months ago and I bought a tortilla press and some masa harina flour and the tortillas were disgusting. I then managed to get some maseca which is the proper maize flour for tortillas and even pancakes. To cook the tortillas I use 2 tawas (which are used to cook chapatis) - one nonstick which I have on medium heat and a cast iron one which I have on a high heat and - SUCCESS - my tortillas come out beautifully. They puff up just like in this video.
this is rather stupid , are you expecting everyone to know the specific ingredients and the amounts and any tricks to cook it ?! if they already know and pro at it then they wouldn't be watching this , where are the damn amounts and ingredients ?!

Nice video! I love to watch tortilla and bread making. I made tortillas yesterday using Amaranth flour (I can't have corn) and they came out amazing. Puffed up like that with brown spots, just beautiful. It was my first time, must be beginner's luck! :-) Thanks for sharing this video.
This is a great video. Will you be putting on any more - maybe explaining the technique of mixing the maseca and rolling the tortillas before cooking? That would be helpful.
amazing vid!.I didn't know that tortilla press is that good,I want one! lol.so I have to buy a flour called corn flour ?.I never heard of this flour before.
wow que bueno que hay tortillerias aqui! no podria vivir sin tortillas ni sin limon...no el amarillo¬¬ aay y los tacos de limon y saal! q rico..voy a comer:)
I will try the proportions indicated below (2 cups maseca + 1 1/2 cups warm water) because I use the recipe in the bag of the Maseca Masa Harina and my tortillas did not have the right consistency. I should probably get the tortilla press and a round cast iron pan too. I am currently using a wooden pin.
First of all, what´s with the porn muzak soundtrack? And I could use just a few words on making the masa, quantities, etc. Also, does anyone know where I can get the tortilla maker and flour in Madrid? It´s impossible to find good Mexican food here so I´m going D.I.Y.
There is an "art" to mixing the dough to the right consistency and also how to press them in the tortilla press......the camal is important too. Please dont underestimate the skills of this obviously very experienced tortilla maker.....she is excellent and she only makes it LOOK easy........ Dont be such brats !
@nescafe39 NO NECESITAS ESO, NADA MAS AGARRA DOS PEDASOS DE BOLSAS DE PLASTICO Y CON LA PALMA DE LA MANO LE VAS DANDO (PEQUEÑOS GOLPES) Y ASI HACES UNA TORTILLA , CLARO VAS GIRANDO LAS BLSAS DE PLASTICO PARA QUE SEA UNIFORME
Blair, you need to do a little more research on the baking. Good tortillas puff up part way through baking and have some small dark spots. That kind of tortilla will be more tender and tasty.
too many views for this crap video. and 5 stars for this video??? this is a 1 star video, the title is misleading. it doesn't tell you how to make a tortilla. it just shows you them cooking them.
that's because you dont need an explination for this video. You mix water and corn flour, kneed it, put some in a tortilla press, then put it on a skillet flipping it until it begins to rise, then it's done.
@taiden Exactly right. It's about the consistency of the dough (clearly shown) and how to cook them. The thing I appreciate in this video is the secondary title...Mom's Tortilla Making 101. This is a kid that enjoys/appreciates the skills and love his/her parents have to offer. I would say this kid and this mom has a real good relationship. Cooking with your kids is a such a blessing and some great conversations take place in the kitchen.
@bradyscottboynton your preparation of ingredients is not well balanced. You probably put more flour than it needs. The preparation should feel elastic, but not sticky and not like sand either. Don't gice up and try it one more time...You shoud get it this time...Good luck!!! ;)
Ok so what was the ingredients? It looked like flour, but these are supposed to be corn, so is it corn meal? And then you put water in it and thats it?
3 1/2 all purpose flour,1 tsp salt,1/2 tsp baking powder,3.5oz of veg shortening,1cup hot water. let sit covered after kneeding for 15 mins.makes maybe 17 tortillas.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
WAT!! u hav a tortilla press.........and i thot i was watchin a good tortilla video. the best are kneaded with their hands STR8 UP! i like em when their fat and hav big dark spots on them.. AH so good, i havent had a good tortilla in too long. obviously i plan on changing that today. with some help from youtube. BOOM, go tortilla lovers
Oh man, estoy seguro de que cuando terminen de hacer las tortillas, se las comeran con que queso, frijoles y chicharron y un chilito serrano o jalapeño, invitan no sean gachos eh.
I just found out the answer to why two pans: according to Rick Bayless' Mexico: One Plate at a Time cookbook, first pan should be med-low heat, second pan med-high heat.
I've tried a couple times to make tortillas with maseca flour and my method is just about the same except I press the tortillas with a pan as I don't have a press.
For me when the tortilla is formed it always falls apart so easily. At 2:03 she carries an uncooked tortilla to the pan, if I tried to do it that way it would fall apart. I think I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what.
One more thing, when the tortillas are done cooking for me they are always too hard and never blow up. Help!
could it be you are not adding enough of liquid? from the experience of baking, that will always happen if the dough is too dry....maybe you should try adding a bit more liquid~
@flylxy Yeah I've since been able to keep my tortillas together. Using warm water and letting the dough rest for 20 minutes after mixing seems to help the consistency... But I think the key is the way you hold it and unstick it from the plastic. This video helped me a lot: videos (dot) surlatable (dot) com/TortillaandSalsa (dot) mov
I still haven't figured out how to make them puff consistently but I guess I just need to play with the hydration of the dough and the temperature of my griddles.
@cmalchik In order to make them puff you must do the following: once you place it on the pan wait for a few seconds until you’re able to peel it off and flip to the other side, on this side you must cook it a little longer (this side must have a harder surface...you will notice the difference between both sides-don’t overdo it) then flip once move and it should raise up (cook for another few seconds). Don’t get me wrong but it also depends on your dough consistency. Hope it helps =)
@cherri7 I don't have a press; I use a pan... but I'm pretty sure most flour tortilla dough is too tough to be pressed so most people just roll them out.
you can tell some one is Hispanic when they flip the tortillas with their hands and do not burn their fingers haah

@sarikavd From what i recall, chappati and torillas taste different even though they might look the same...

Can you post the recipe & instructions.
ttellas 1 year ago
Blair, you need to do a little more research on the baking. Good tortillas puff up part way through baking and have some small dark spots. That kind of tortilla will be more tender and tasty.

too many views for this crap video. and 5 stars for this video??? this is a 1 star video, the title is misleading. it doesn't tell you how to make a tortilla. it just shows you them cooking them.
angeleyes6969 2 years ago
i actually agree with you
successdrivenlifetv 1 year ago
that's because you dont need an explination for this video. You mix water and corn flour, kneed it, put some in a tortilla press, then put it on a skillet flipping it until it begins to rise, then it's done.
taiden 1 year ago 8
@taiden Exactly right. It's about the consistency of the dough (clearly shown) and how to cook them. The thing I appreciate in this video is the secondary title...Mom's Tortilla Making 101. This is a kid that enjoys/appreciates the skills and love his/her parents have to offer. I would say this kid and this mom has a real good relationship. Cooking with your kids is a such a blessing and some great conversations take place in the kitchen.
Gotta find me a tortilla press.

I tried making corn tortillas but they fall apart before I can even get them in the frying pan. Does anyone have a suggestion.
bradyscottboynton 2 years ago
You can try to make the tortillas a little bit more thicker, and see the results.
leocantug2 2 years ago
@bradyscottboynton your preparation of ingredients is not well balanced. You probably put more flour than it needs. The preparation should feel elastic, but not sticky and not like sand either. Don't gice up and try it one more time...You shoud get it this time...Good luck!!! ;)
BabelaSweet 2 years ago
thank you so much babelasweet. when you say flour you are referring to corn flour.
bradyscottboynton 2 years ago
You are more than welcome. And yes I refer to corn flour! Let me know if u make them againg and tell me how they turned out...good luck!!!

Ok so what was the ingredients? It looked like flour, but these are supposed to be corn, so is it corn meal? And then you put water in it and thats it?
SpiritfilledDaughter 2 years ago 2
3 1/2 all purpose flour,1 tsp salt,1/2 tsp baking powder,3.5oz of veg shortening,1cup hot water. let sit covered after kneeding for 15 mins.makes maybe 17 tortillas.

AH so good, i havent had a good tortilla in too long. obviously i plan on changing that today. with some help from youtube. BOOM, go tortilla lovers
xoxo3808 2 years ago
unless you soak and grind your own corn, hand-pressing usually leaves them too thick for me. once i get a metate y mano i will make them from scratch

I just found out the answer to why two pans: according to Rick Bayless' Mexico: One Plate at a Time cookbook, first pan should be med-low heat, second pan med-high heat.
tebria 2 years ago
Love this video! But same question as below--why the two pans? Are they at different heats?

The dough is different, I actually make my own dough and roll them out. They have a different texture and taste is better.
topcop110 2 years ago
I've tried a couple times to make tortillas with maseca flour and my method is just about the same except I press the tortillas with a pan as I don't have a press.
For me when the tortilla is formed it always falls apart so easily. At 2:03 she carries an uncooked tortilla to the pan, if I tried to do it that way it would fall apart. I think I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what.
One more thing, when the tortillas are done cooking for me they are always too hard and never blow up. Help!
cmalchik 2 years ago
could it be you are not adding enough of liquid? from the experience of baking, that will always happen if the dough is too dry....maybe you should try adding a bit more liquid~
JulianaChi 2 years ago 2
@cmalchik I have the same problem... did you find a solution?
flylxy 1 year ago

cmalchik 1 year ago
@flylxy Yeah I've since been able to keep my tortillas together. Using warm water and letting the dough rest for 20 minutes after mixing seems to help the consistency... But I think the key is the way you hold it and unstick it from the plastic. This video helped me a lot: videos (dot) surlatable (dot) com/TortillaandSalsa (dot) mov
I still haven't figured out how to make them puff consistently but I guess I just need to play with the hydration of the dough and the temperature of my griddles.
cmalchik 1 year ago
@cmalchik In order to make them puff you must do the following: once you place it on the pan wait for a few seconds until you’re able to peel it off and flip to the other side, on this side you must cook it a little longer (this side must have a harder surface...you will notice the difference between both sides-don’t overdo it) then flip once move and it should raise up (cook for another few seconds). Don’t get me wrong but it also depends on your dough consistency. Hope it helps =)
0secretheart0 1 year ago
@cmalchik hi can you make flour tortillas on this tortilla press?
cherri7 1 year ago
@cherri7 I don't have a press; I use a pan... but I'm pretty sure most flour tortilla dough is too tough to be pressed so most people just roll them out.
cmalchik 1 year ago
@cmalchik thanks for reply :).I'll be sure to make my rotis and flour tortillas soft like corn tortillas.
