More like Pirates meets Sleepy Hollow but yes, wouldn't this make a great remake by today's standards...Tim Burton, or Jerry Bruckheimer....even a Peter Jackson..Come on Disney!!!!
This show (and the Scarecrow when in his mask, in particular) scared me out of my socks when I was a kid, but I liked it anyway and always wanted to watch it whenever Disney broadcast it. I was so young I didn't realise the story took place in England. For some reason, I always thought it was one of those American Revolution legends. Now I gotta watch the YouTube video...for the first time in almost 50 years! (But I still remember the theme song.)
i remember seeing this in the early 70s. or late 60s.. it came on NBC cant remember the night though.... it didnt last long before it was canceled..... i liked it as a kid it reminded me of zorro.....
@oldschoolsituationz It wasn't cancelled. It ran in 3 segments and if you saw the movie you'd understand that there are three distinct segments within the movie. It was shown twice, the original run and then in repeats. It was, and still is, one of my all time favorite movies.
This show use to scare the crap out of me. I was 4 or 5 when it first came out. Can't believe it was Disney, although I remember watching it. I believe it was on Sundays.
@dennello You nailed it. Scared me as well. We all wanted to be the Scarecrow and his men. I love everything that Patrick McGoohan has done. Watch Danger Man and The Three Lives of Thomasina.
Great series of Disney movies featuring Patrick McGoohan (the prisoner /secret agent man) These old Diasney classics are unequalled. I agree with others that television was much better then when the world was still devoid of political correctness.Yes Johnny Depp would be a wonderful modern day Scarecrow.
I remember this from the Disney shows of the 1960s. That was when tv was a form of news and entertainment, not political correctness and liberal ideology.
Aww, what happened to the good ol' shows's like these and many more that Disney use to do. Not only were they cool, they also taught you a little bit of history. What do the Disney Channel shows teach now? Not much.
THEY NEED TO DO A MODERN DAY RECREATION OF THIS. I'M SURE IT WOULD BE A MONSTER HIT IF PROPERLY DONE. ANY PRODUCERS LISTENING? IF ONLY HE WAS YOUNGER - JACK NICKELSON WOULD BE GOOD BUT YOU KNOW WHAT JUST HIT ME ? JOHNNY DEPP WOULD BE KICK ASS PERFECT!
Of the really good Disney serials (The Prince and the Pauper, Hans Brinker & Zorro) this was my favorite. I had an old coat and made my own scarecrow garb, riding around the backyard on a stick horse singing the theme song. I found several of the episodes online just recently. Great Stuff
Thanks for your reply thomsboys77 - cheers - I can remember watching it as a lad on BBC probably about 30 years ago now - would be great to get the exact date it was shown on TV as a full length feature film. It was re-released as a Disney Treasures DVD, digitally remastered - costs about £125.00 to buy on amazon.
Thankfully I managed to get a full HD digital copy of the film as shot in widescreen format (yes - back in 1963) - and its something else - the digital detail is immense
@mrmjoker I dont think its on now in any other country sorry but sadly the dvd is only relesed in america but u can either buy the vhs or if u go on ebay and type down dr syn dvd they sell the film and the 3 parted one on dvd but it is recorded and it can work on any dvd player for cheep prices.
God, does this take me back in time. I remember watching this when Disney showed this on Sunday nights. You could always count on The Wonderful World of Color to present great shows.
@sarkelcpa I believe this originally aired on Disney in 1964 - the same year as "For the Love of Willadean," which starred Billy Mumy and Roger Mobley.
I usually don't swear or go into tirads but after looking at this clip it just really sends home how shitty TV shows are....television absolutely blows now
back a bunch of years ago i was always glued to the chair while this was on tv i would get on my rocking horse with my dads big black rain coat and get in front of a fan so the coat would blow in the wind and i'd try to laugh like the scarecrow. i could listen to this song all day and not get tired of it.. anyone know where i could get the scarecrow song on a cd????
When I was a kid,40 some years ago,I would look at the Wonderful world of Disney, and look at this short series, Patrick McGoohan was cool in this show as the vicar of Dim church and the scarecrow.
Wow, does this bring back some memories! I have had visions of this scarecrow character for years since I was a kid (back in the early 70's) I must have seen it on Disney or something. All I remember was that it scared the crap out of me. Would love to watch it in its entirety now.
this has always seemed such a Halloweeen theme song! i remember it from i was little,in the 1960s, and had it on a little record.....Brrrr! scary still! thanks for the great memories!
Doc Savage debuted in 1933 and was as much as Superman inspired by Hugo Danner, the Gladiator of Philip Wylie's 1930 novel of the same name. In much the same fashion, Batman was inspired by the Shadow who was no less modeled after the Count of Monte Cristo, the true father of dark vigilantes with alter egos.
i remember watching this with my dad on Vault Disney late at night, i never rememberd the episodes because i was really little...but watching this again i realized that his maks freaked me out a bit but the theme song & laugh have always stuck with me...kinda like Zorro...
I remember watching this show with my brothers and sisters on Feb 9,16,23 1964.Dates sound familier?? Yes, it was shown the same weeks the Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan show. I remember watching "Scarecrow" on Disney and then Ed Sullivan came right after Disney with the Beatles. Nice memories.
You really knocked down my "deck of cards". I was sure this was originally run January 5, 12 and 19, 1964. . but, I must yield to you for that was too distinct a tie in the Beatles on Sullivan ..
This was originally shown on Walt Disney's "Wonderful World of Color" over three weeks in January 1964 and repeated that July. The "Scarecrow" was shown again in May 1970, and was never run again. (except when the Disney show was briefly in syndication in 1986) That's probably why you do not recall seeing it.
i saw this in the early 70s when my school took us all to Lydd for a week, we were trooped into a big hall and given a packet of sweets. We all hoped to see a cartoon but had to sit through this (we were 10 or 11). gods it was boring.
True and Batman was based on Zorro who was based on Springheeled Jack who is also a inspiration for Dracula, and the Joker is based on the Laughing Man XD
@KajiRider1997 Many parts of Batman were based on Doc Savage, a pulp character from the 1930's...also many parts of Doc Savage were used for Superman
for example, Doc Savage had: a Fortress of Solitude at the North Pole, he was considered and scientific genius and detective, he was considered a "superman" of physical strength and development, he had a "utility vest" with pockets containing many gadgets and was a millionaire, and so on
@docsavage98 True and Batman also took inspiration from The Shadow and The Bat (from the same creator as Zorro) and i still believe that Superman got his main powers from Ogon Bat (Golden Bat) who is Japan's first superhero, who had most of Superman's main powers and debuted in the same year as Doc Savage 1930.
The books were great, they were written by Russel Thorndyke, the brother of Dame Sybll Thorndyke, unfortunately they are now out of print May Dr. Syn sail away free on the "Imogen" arr, wi a wannion !
Just got my DVD. The movie is as good as it was when i 1st saw it in the early 60's. Scarecrow,The Curlew and Hellspite are terrific as "villians".Sadly my intro-theme song came without the trademark "cackling laugh".That really ticks me off. But a great movie despite that. 129 minutes.
same here, but I was like 4. omg! I seem to remember the scarecrow's eyes lighting up. But it's probably the imagination of a 4 year old. Truly fascinating.
Patrick McGoohan played the scarecrow (his secrret identity) I rember this fondly having watched it on my parent's first color TV on Sunday night "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color"
I've never seen this, never heard of it, don't really care for what I saw after the intro... but the intro was like the most awesome thing ever. I love scarecrows (how I found this). I loved the atmosphere. It reminded me of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Anyway, not a fan of such old music generally but this song is fricken awesome.. I wouldn't mind seeing the whole thing though if it's available on DVD or something...
My dad wants me to get his this for his birthday. It looks really interesting. I hope I can find it. I wish Disney still made movies/series like this, entertainment that was fit for adults and brain candy for kids. Darker movies worked for some kids while for others there was Winnie the Pooh; unfortunately now children's entertainment only comes in one form--dumbed down and silly. Give kids some credit, Disney!
I have been searching high and low for this show on DVD!!!!! I watched The Wonderful World of Disney when it was originally on, and was raised on Davy Crockett. I recently discovered Swamp Fox. Although a lot of Patrick McGoohan's fans remember him for The Prisoner, a lot of his fans remember him from his Disney movies as well! RIP Patrick, you will be sorely missed!
Really, the Scarecrow is more scary than any of the Batman villians---Patrick McGoohan in this series was as awesome as the guy who plays the current Joker---the actor who died---Patrick McGoohans voice has this effect on me--I cant remember anything!
I LOVED this show on Disney. I was in the 6th grade and had a huge crush on Patrick McGoohan. It came on the same night as the Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan show---AND I WATCHED THIS. Patrick McGoohan is the greatest--I loved his voice and his laugh in this!!!!
My goodness thank you! I've been trying to find this movie. I saw it when I was 5 yrs old on TV and all I could remember was part of the title and that it was disney. Of course that's probably a lot of details to remember for that age. The moment I heard the song it all came back to me.
That LAUGH!!! Fantastic. I remember it, too, from about that age (not sure exactly how old I was, between 5 and 8). I loved that mask -- it was creepy/scary but also cool, especially how the mask's mouth moved with the Scarecrow's mouth when he spoke. Wow, what a great series. (I think of it as a "series" even tho it was only 3 eps long, LOL. Perspective of a child, I guess.)
I wonder who sang that song and who wrote it? The singer was great as well. Wow, they don't make 'em like they used to.
Thanks for posting. This was TV at it's finest! They would never run a show like this now on any of the major networks because you had to think a little when you watched this stuff!
I was sad to hear of his passing but was surprised to hear that he played Edward I in Braveheart and the father to Billy Zane in the Shadow. He will be sadly be missed
Vale Patrick McGoohan. This Disney movie showed how great he really was - I still remember the whole hanging scene at the end of this clip. How to turn a family film into something intense.
I use to watch this on the disney show when i was younger.Last week i bought the dvds of the SCARECROW. Now i can watch the SCARECROW all the timeThe theme song is cool like ZORRO's i have a few of ZORRO dvds too.
I have been waiting for this video set for over 40 years, and I finally found a copy to order today. This is the best Disney featured series they have ever made. Brings back so many memories as a kid.
True ant that`s probably gonna be a lot easier now because Disney bought Marvel and because pre-Superman Pulp Heroes are just awesome! so i`m hoping for the comics possibilities for him and Zorro! XD
This IS a feature film. It has 3 distinct parts that Disney used as a "mini-series". I really wouldn't want to see a remake of this. Too classic and remakes have a tendency to be bad. Few actors or directors would do it justice.
....And while you're at it, how about a re-release of the DVD version of this TV show.

RIP Mr. McGoohan!

I was sad to hear of his passing but was surprised to hear that he played Edward I in Braveheart and the father to Billy Zane in the Shadow. He will be sadly be missed

@Erisgoddess69 He played Billy Zane's father in The Phantom, not The Shadow.

Vale Patrick McGoohan. This Disney movie showed how great he really was - I still remember the whole hanging scene at the end of this clip. How to turn a family film into something intense.

This came out 3 years before Adam West's Batman.

Before there was The Prisoner, there was John Drake. And The Scarecrow. Patrick McGoohan has left us a great legacy.

I have been waiting for this video set for over 40 years, and I finally found a copy to order today. This is the best Disney featured series they have ever made. Brings back so many memories as a kid.

This needs a wider audience. Think about it, he's a bit Batman, Scarecrow, and The Joker (the laugh) all rolled into one kind of. Pure awesomeness.

True ant that`s probably gonna be a lot easier now because Disney bought Marvel and because pre-Superman Pulp Heroes are just awesome! so i`m hoping for the comics possibilities for him and Zorro! XD

When is hollywood going to make this into a feature film?
wellingtonian 3 years ago
This IS a feature film. It has 3 distinct parts that Disney used as a "mini-series". I really wouldn't want to see a remake of this. Too classic and remakes have a tendency to be bad. Few actors or directors would do it justice.
