Can someone please give me advice. I rescued a ferret 2 weeks ago....originally she had been abandoned in a hutch (owners had left property and left her behind). She was close to death when found and seems to have an agressive/dominance issue with other ferrets. Will she ever be able to have another fuzzy friend?? She is last years kit, the rescuers believe.....

my girlfriend started feeding her 3 ferrets raw food, they definitely have more energy, better coats and the smell is barely non-existant. I have become a believer in the holistic "natural" approach to keeping pets.

Crap food makes them stink, Makes sense considering they would be eating raw meat naturally.

The smell reminds me of honey. Getting them spayed and neutered reduces the smell. I dont think there is any need to descent them, they only trigger the anal glands scent spray when frightened.

I dont ever bath mine as bathing them makes them produce even more oils and smell stronger. S good diet, spaying/neuetering and clean cages and there shoukdnt be a problem with smells.

@andreacuthbert I agree....and funny you should say about a honey smell...my ferrets smell reminds me of beeswax polish used to clean leather. A neutered ferret doesn't smell bad at all and personally I think descenting is unnecessary and inhumane.

My sable was about that big when I picked him up from the pet store. Letting him run around the house, he lost alot of fat.:^(

I prefer to call the odor "unique", It's a little musky yet it doesn't really stink. People are just spoiled to odors they like.

Watch out for adrenal disease, hair loose is an indicator. Vets can fix the problem w/ surgery, usually not real expensive.

Just wish they lived longer.

Ferrets don't have to smell bad,

you can desent them or bathe them once a month and keep thier cage clean, clean bedding twice a week.

I read in a ferret mag to put corner litter boxes in the corners of your house. They do like to poo in corners. Also bath them once a week and that should eliminate the smell. Also expose your Mom to how cute they are, how could she not love them? They love the water bathing them is fun. Also they sell ferret cologne at most pet stores.

Bathe them once a week to eliminate the smell? That's only going to make it worse. Ferrets have oil glands that keep their skin nice and ferret healthy. But if you bathe them often, the wash will strip it of oil from skin and fur.

That may make it irritated or itchy. Plus, that will make it smellier because the oil glands go overload to replace the oil that's been washed and more. For a happy, healthy ferret, wash it no more than once a month. I'd say about once every season.

If they are de-scented they don't smell. Bathing is not necessary but even makes the smell worse because the skin exudes even more oil to make up for the one you washed off.

It's from martinscagesdotcom. Though now over 3 yrs later I'm favoring our ferret nation cage much more... much easier to clean... and sturdy. I've noticed the martins cage is starting bend in at the bottom and it's just much hard to clean. Plus it was heck to put together!
