We are on the cusp of pulling ourselves out of the hole, a carbon tax on our economic activity would be crushing. GO Maritimes and NL and Lab!
Not true. A carbon tax would not punish Maritime oil and natural gas production because the tax is on emissions. Very little carbon is emitted in off shore extraction in comparison to the the Alberta tarsands. I am sure Danny Williams did the math otherwise he would not be so opposed to the Harper government.
Of course it would, we have to refine that oil don't we? Google Irving oil project Elder Rock. We need to attract more manufacturing in order to create more jobs for ourselves, not increase the costs and make it more tempting for our companies to leave to go over seas. I haven't watched through the whole video yet, but I find it rather ironic that the same guy who said he wouldn't legislate people back to work and yet proceeded to do just that within months of going into office is criticzing Stephen Harper for breaking his promises, and I'm not much of a fan of the Harper government myself. (Though I haven't been following Canadian politics much recently)

Hi all, rhth79 and therocklives have got this issue right: the Atlantic Accord states that the deal cannot be amended without "the mutual consent of both parties (i.e. the NL government and the Federal Government). Of course, Harper has shown his disdain for accords: he won't respect Kyoto, he fails to implement the Kelowna Accord, he unilaterly amends the 1985 and 2005 Atlantic Accords through the budget implementation act.

rpierce: Totally wrong. Why were they handed this choice in the first place? Newfoundland already had a written agreement called the Atlantic Accord. Nobody was complaining about this agreement. You try and change the agreement on the transmission corridor through Quebec from the Upper Churchill Hydro development and see what happens. Also try and change the Auto Pact agreement in Ontario and see what happens.

Someone did comment that Mr. Williams would be a good cabinet minister, and a good PC Prime Minister... I could not agree more. He has guts, intellegence and integrity. More then I can say about Steven Harper. Oh and to whoever said he has nice eyes/hair... he dont. He looks like an ass. He IS an ass!!

Fellow Atlantic Canadians, we still have to vote conservative in this election, Canada needs to be a republic with both regional and population representation. We are on the cusp of pulling ourselves out of the hole, a carbon tax on our economic activity would be crushing. GO Maritimes and NL and Lab!

Not true. A carbon tax would not punish Maritime oil and natural gas production because the tax is on emissions. Very little carbon is emitted in off shore extraction in comparison to the the Alberta tarsands. I am sure Danny Williams did the math otherwise he would not be so opposed to the Harper government.

Of course it would, we have to refine that oil don't we? Google Irving oil project Elder Rock. We need to attract more manufacturing in order to create more jobs for ourselves, not increase the costs and make it more tempting for our companies to leave to go over seas. Williams is good, but he has a chip on his shoulder and plays the "Newfoundland against the world" card.

I haven't watched through the whole video yet, but I find it rather ironic that the same guy who said he wouldn't legislate people back to work and yet proceeded to do just that within months of going into office is criticzing Stephen Harper for breaking his promises, and I'm not much of a fan of the Harper government myself. (Though I haven't been following Canadian politics much recently)

It appears as though Danny Williams is one in a million. He appears to have a high degree of integrity and dedication. As a Nova Scotian I consider this to be quite a contrast to Rodney MacDonald who is currently resorting to tabloid publicity in an attempt to get a mirky talk show host to visit Nova Scotia.

Hi all, rhth79 and therocklives have got this issue right: the Atlantic Accord states that the deal cannot be amended without "the mutual consent of both parties (i.e. the NL government and the Federal Government). Of course, Harper has shown his disdain for accords: he won't respect Kyoto, he fails to implement the Kelowna Accord, he unilaterly amends the 1985 and 2005 Atlantic Accords through the budget implementation act.

Called his bluff?? Any issues with the agreement should have been made in negotiations, not through a 'consequential amendment' in the Budget Implementation Act that changed the deal by 11 billion!!!

their was a contract signed into law, dis allowing the gov from making changes to the atlanitc accord, by making chnages without consultation they have broken their contract. simple. we get a current equal value which was promised, but we now cannot grow beyond ont or quebec financially, which has been predicted , given ont slow down..get it?

He knows money, being a self made millionaire and all, plus, hes a lawyer. He knows how to get things done. Plus, he's done a lot more for newfoundland than the liberals ever did. Newfoundland was given a choice stay with the Atlantic Accord or come under the framework of the new agreement, you can't always have the best of both worlds.

Newfoundland is going to lose from what it was promised, regardless of what is was promised, maybe we should talk about Quebec always getting the best of both worlds, because that is really what is happening here, Harper is trying to buy votes in Quebec, by giving then the Money that belongs to several other provinces.

rpierce: Totally wrong. Why were they handed this choice in the first place? Newfoundland already had a written agreement called the Atlantic Accord. Nobody was complaining about this agreement. You try and change the agreement on the transmission corridor through Quebec from the Upper Churchill Hydro development and see what happens. Also try and change the Auto Pact agreement in Ontario and see what happens.
